I bought a LG 29EB73-P and need some help deciding on a card that will allow max settings when gaming. No game in particular but would like to be safe for at least the next year or so before I have to drop settings or upgrade. Currently playing BF4, Metro LL, TR & Skyrim. Will a single EVGA GTX 780 3GB Classified do it or will I need a 780ti?

Rest of the build:

ASUS MAXIMUS VI GENE LGA 1150
i7-4770K
(Undecided on RAM)

it all depends on if you are ok with turning down some settings. instead of ULTRAAA going to high can help alot. @ 60 fps i would think a 780 is fine. but if you have the money to burn everyone is going to tell you to get a Ti.

My reasoning for wanting the max settings for the current games is so I can turn it down a little over the next year. I considered an AMD card but from what I have read it is a furnace and this will be going in a small cube style case so heat is a factor.

A 780 will max bf4 at that resolution. My absolute minimum is 80 fps at 1080p and that's with card at stock. I run 2xmsaa and fxaa low tho as visually it is much much better than 4x and high. High fxaa is discusting blurry mess.

2560x1080 is only about 30-35% more pixels than 1080p off the top of my head. Should put you around 50 fps absolute minimum with same settings as me. 90% of time I'm up in the 100s.

I have 2x770s 4GB version and Metro LL frequently made them scream in pain @ 2560x1600

Likely because of mem bus. My overclocked 670s were the same thing at 1920x1080 even with 2xssao. Smooth tho but my framerate was identical on stock 780. Both metros scale with memory bus. Not usually amount of vram just bus width. Only game I've seen do it so drastically.

I'd probably recommend the MSI Lightning GTX 780 over the EVGA, despite the fact that I like EVGA quite a bit. I think the Lightning has a better cooler.

a 770 should be enough 4gb version IMO
I disagree. I had 680 SLI and at 2560x1440 there were games that I had to turn settings down on to run smoothly, such as Far Cry 3 and Battlefield 4. If OP wants to max games out on a single card he will need a 780 or 290(x). If you are okay with turning off MSAA or running High instead of Ultra, then a 770 should be fine.

Upps I didn't see the first rest. Yeah you will need a 780 or 290 for this .

A 2gb card will not be enough

F it! Just ordered the EVGA 780ti Kingpin. I will air cool for now but planning on water cooling everything once the dust settles and I am no longer in risk of divorce.

You are going to like that card. I just bought two EVGA 780tTi Classies myself. Trick is buy them using your super secret toy fund stash, get the cards delivered when the wife is out, and then install them using ninja PC upgrades skills in the dead of the night. Lowers divorce risk substantially. :)

Yeah, pretty excited - building a new rig around it. Coming from a i7 920 & 6970 to a 4770k & 780ti so it should be quite the leap in performance.

I have that moniter and running 3 780 Gtxs at 1180 core and metro and crysis 3 Maxxed out run good but not great ( 3rd card doesn't scale well. 1 card will not give you great gameplay unless turning down the eye candy and AA, on some of the newest games. BF4 you will have to turn AA down and a few settings otherwise you will dip under 60fps in multiplayer servers in spots and it will get a little jerky. You need at leash 2 cards to have some really nice gameplay.

Any recommendations for a power supply? Preferably fully modular - going in a Fractal Node 304 (or similar small cube case)

Edit: is the Kingpin 780ti the same length as a normal 780ti?

You can't go wrong with something from the Seasonic X-series of power supplies. Full system load with a 780 Ti is usually reported as 400-500W depending on system configuration, so the 750W version should give you plenty of headroom in the worst-case scenario.

Also, I believe the Kingpin version is the same height and length as the reference card (10.5x4.4 inches).

This is true if you aren't overclocking your Kingpin. The Kingpin is capable of drawing up to 450W of power all by itself, that's why it has 3 separate power connectors feeding it - two 8 pin and a 6 pin). If you plan to waterblock your card and really goose it, you may want to keep this in mind.

Seasonic makes some great supplies. Stick with a good brand (Seasonic, Corsair, Enermax, etc.), but I would consider going with something with a bit more headroom as to wattage, especially if you plan to overclock, add a waterpump and extra fans for a radiator. You never know - you might want to add a second card into the mix down the road as well. ;)

Seasonic typically tend to under rate PSU so a 950W (Calculated with V and A) PSU will be rated at 850W, I like that in a PSU company.

Oh yeah, planning on OC'ing the hell out of it and possibly later this summer adding a sibling to it.

Ordered my ASUS MAXIMUS VI GENE today too. Picking up a 4770k from Microcenter next week. I am worried about finding a small cube style case that will have enough room for everything and adequate air flow.

I'm running 2560x1080 and a single 290 does the trick just fine. Its only a little more pixels than 1080p when compared to the 1440p/1600p monitors.
