Greetings,

I am a gamer and also a PhD student at Nottingham Trent University (UK) that is currently doing some research on Gaming (Online and/or Offline). If you want to voluntarily take part in my survey I would be grateful :)

Here is the link: http://svy.mk/M9Uk3u
Please note that this project is personal and has been ethically approved by the university's ethical committee.

For further questions you can contact me here,
Thanks and have a nice day everyone!

Ya... Maybe later. Way too long.

You should look at re-factoring the survey to be shorter and only ask more pertinent questions. Your survey suffers from what I've seen a lot in the behaviourial sciences which is wanting to be too thorough and specific in what you ask. Not a bad idea, data wise, but you are dealing with people and they'll get bored and not want to answer all those questions, or start not reading them and not answering them properly.

A shorter survey that is more to the point will get you better data than one this long.

Done. Hope it helps.

Edit: I didn't think it was that long.. took me about 5 minutes.

Done. Is the research about gaming addiction or causes of addiction?

With social and behavioral questions, sometimes they need to be asked multiple times or in multiple ways in case a question was not read correctly or the person lied. You could ask each question once but I doubt it would be accurate, and possible not even qualify for the research.

Also, Moanah, please come back when your finished and post the link to your dissertation :D

Done, wasn't that bad should only take about 5 minutes to complete, hope it helps gl^^

22. I don’t think the amount of time I spend gambling has increased at all over the last year.

When you copy / paste another survey you should proof read it first before posting.

The use of negatives in some questions make it a little clunky.

I caught that, too -- but I gave the benefit of the doubt and was thinking maybe he was trying to see if gambling led to gaming (kind of like how pot led to crack in the 90's). But yeah, it's clearly an addiction survey, probably copied from a gambling one.

The survey seems to be more dedicated to the online gamer than the offline gamer. That actually might have been a good question to ask, really. I used to be a hardcore online gamer but, as Sweet Brown said, ain't nobody go time for that. I now game far less and I answered very differently than I would have 5 years ago.

Same. I thought it was trying to equate the 2. Also I used to game like it was a job. 5+ hours nightly. Now it's more like a hobby.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I will certainly give a feedback for your guys here and post a link with the main findings of the study :)
Thanks!

Sorry friend but this survey wasn't copied from anyone else's survey. As odd it may seem, many people keep asking the same and in fact we had this question because some games do allow gamers to gamble within the game. Anyway, we will be likely removing this question in subsequent studies as it doesn't seem to hold any face valid for games.

Thanks

So why did you copy paste this from a gambling survey anyway? I think you will find both can be addicting, but gaming probably isn't blowing through money like a gambler is.

As I have just replied to other user, this survey was entirely created in the International Gaming Research Unit by me and Professor Griffiths and we did not copied any other survey. The whole idea of the gambling question (which we realise now that seems not so important for gamers) was the fact that some games do allow players to gamble inside the gaming environment (e.g., Second Life).

Hope it helps,
Thanks for the feedback.

Anyway,
Just to let you guys know. Because this was the pilot study (first study), for the next one as an incentive and way of saying thanks we will be drawing 250 pounds (in 5 draws of 50 pounds each) to anyone who successfully complete the survey :)

I will let you guys know when it happens.

Seems like you're comparing gaming to a drug addiction. Good luck with the research.

Took it it first the survey gave me a feel good response... then suddenly the question started repeating themselves.

This survey is geared towards console boys who don't go outside and platinum everything.

Why would say it is only for these boys? :)

The use of negatives in some questions make it a little clunky.

^ came to say this

Seems like most gamers will know what the study is going for right off the bat and adjust their answers accordingly. Needs some dummy questions to throw people off so you get accurate answers.

I think this questionnaire is biased. It asks all the questions that can be used to portrait gaming as an addiction. Almost all of the questions are suggestive of this. You can't get legitimate results this way.

Honestly I have the problem exactly reversed. I want to increase the amount of time I play but I can't. I have so many unfinished games that I WANT to play but I fail to that it's really bothering me.

Also there are lots of redundancies the same question reappearing, with different phrasing or exactly the same way sometimes.

done, but gambling, are we talking about spending money to win more money, or just chance taking in games, i.e. 70% chance of success, do you want to try even if you fail at crafting and your items break and are lost?

i dream about gaming after i played a game, i dream about everything after i do it, its sort of like mental preparation learning exercise. driving tetris acls swimming etc

there are a lot of negatives in the questions. i strongly disagree about not having trouble with the cessation of gaming! i would think these type of questions skew the accuracy from the intended answer.

im sort of offended by the overall tone, there were no questions about how gaming has helped me, taught me and reinforced focus and attention, significantly improved computer usage skills, increased typing speed, audio visual setup, quickened simple arithmetic skills (profit vs time), spatial comprehension allowing me to visually imagine things i cannot see (Intravenous access, ET tube insertion) identify visual relationships (ekg, capnography) stat balancing (this drug and this drug and this drug altogether should yield this)

and the rather simplistic lumping of games. social vs non social ?

I took the survey but now I feel like complete shit because I missed out on 5 minutes of gaming. Now I'll have to stay up all night playing. I'll probably get fired tomorrow. Oh well, I'll still have my games. My precious games. Games.

Games.
