Looks nice!

Couldn't fit the SSD in a drive tray somewhere?

I could have put back in the second set of drive trays but I was trying to keep it as uncluttered as possible. I kind of like the way it looks sitting there. I just need to find a way to attach it...possibly Velcro or even drilling holes to mount it to the top of the tray. All the other 3.5" trays are full.

The really sad part is this isn't my first one...lol. Just went from a D40x to a D5000.

I did the same when I upgraded my XT also. Only... I went out in the middle of lightning storms to test it out. :D

how much did this run you?

Awe man...brutal question. I think I did pretty well finding deals where I could. Some of the parts are overkill, but they were either a good deal, or I just wanted them...lol. Here is the break down.

Corsair 650D case - $170
i7-2700 @ 4.9Ghz - $290 (bought new from forum member)
P8Z68 Deluxe - $210 (Newegg open box)
H100 - $85 (bought slightly used from forum member)
Push/Pull fan upgrades for H100 to Gentle Typhoon AP-15s - $15 x 4=$60
Megaflow 200mm front fan - $20
2 x Sapphire 6950 Unlocked 880MHz/1275MHz - $420 for the pair (bought slightly used from forum member)
16gb Gskill Sniper 1866MHz - $105
2 x 60gb OCZ Vertex 3 Raid 0 - $90 each - $180
1TB WD 7200rpm - $60 (bought used from forum member)
LG BluRay Burner - $80
OCZ ZT 750w Modular - $105
Samsung 23z550h - $200

So...$1785 without the monitor and $1985 with.

Was the price breakdown that bad? I thought I did ok. Seems like a lot of machine for <$1800.

You actually did pretty good, especially since you've bought several parts from the here and the open-box motherboard saved you a bit of money compared to a brand new one. I have to nitpick about a few parts, most notably the SSDs (many of us here don't recommend OCZ SSDs in general for quality and reliability issues) and the PSU (ditto) -- and why do you need DDR3 1866 RAM when Sandy Bridge runs fine with DDR3 1333? -- but other than that, not bad.

(Now regarding those OCZ components, did you buy them new or used?)

I went with OCZ because I have had really good luck with them in the past (vertex 2 and agility 2 drives) and wanted to keep giving them a shot. I thought about, and could have, gone Corsai psu and Crucial M4 SSD but for some reason I wanted to see if my good luck with OCZ would keep. Their fit, finish, and packaging is top notch. Especially the PSU and my SSDs scream. The first time they let me down, I will be done with them. Until then I decided to keep giving them a shot. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Plus with success of OCZ comes more competition for the big boys, and with competition the consumer is the ultimate winner.

As for the 1866MHz I had two reasons. The first is that it was a good deal at the time and I liked the way the looked. The second is vain and completely insane. I knew it took 1866MHz to get 7.9 in WEI...lol :D

Thanks guys. Almost 3 years later and I still feel like my 2700k is future proof...lol

Just swapped my 6950s for a EVGA GTX 970. It is a beast...absolutely smokes my 6950s. Overclocked easily to 24/7 of 1500+...benches stably at 1550+.

This is what i posted earlier in this section, was looking to upgrade or build new, i have a 2600k, and looking at a 980 and two asus 144hz monitors. Can't decide if i want to keep the 2600k and get some good cooling options and get some life out of it then upgrade mobo cpu and add another card in a year or so.
