I've started folding again and would like to know what settings I should use to get the most out of my gpu. I've read that the new gpu client likes to dedicate 1 cpu core....should I leave the client setting at -1 or is there something better.
Running a 2500k @ 4.2ghz and a 660ti at the moment

Nvidia GPUs do need a free CPU core for Folding. AMD GPUs do not. I'm not currently doing GPU Folding, so apart from above, I don't know what settings to advise.

I would go with CPU:6

1 for the/each GPU (and Core 17), one for OS/environment ... 8-1-1 =6 (works for me)

Make sure you're to not use the latest driver; better stick with 304/319/32x. The latest one (33x) are better for the high end cards but leaving quite some performance impact on the older cards.

This is good advice, particularly if you use the system, i.e. not a dedicated folding box. That being said, YMMV depending on your use case. Set it up as suggested here, then try tweaking one thing at a time and compare:
  • system usability
  • system stability
  • power usage
  • CPU PPD
  • GPU PPD
If your GPU competes with your CPU WU, typically the points lost on GPU exceed the point made on CPU. Note that some CPU WU don't like largish primes of threads, so the core may only use <allocated prime number of threads> - 1. The core knows what it doesn't like, so it will adjust accordingly, regardless of client config.

I switched to driver 326.80 about 10 days ago and what a difference, almost double ppd.

To be clear on the cpu threads to use, I don't have hyperthreading so make that 2? And do I only change the cpu threads in the cpu slot, not the gpu slot...since the options are available in both?

With a 4 core, 4 thread CPU you'd configure the CPU to 3 threads. That will free up the fourth for the GPU.
