Rarest cart of all time inches away from $100k on ebay (almost finished)

Someone please explain why this thing is so valuable I've seen whole collections of unopened super rare games go for less.

Well...
The Nintendo World Championships was a 1990 Nintendo-promoted video game competition that toured twenty-nine cities across the United States. It was based on scoring points in three Nintendo Entertainment System games (Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris) within a time limit of 6 minutes and 21 seconds. The competition was based loosely on the movie The Wizard.

The Nintendo World Championships 1990 game cartridge is considered to be the most valuable NES cartridge released and one of the rarest (second only to Stadium Events).[5] Because fewer gold cartridges were manufactured, they are rarer and demand a higher price than the gray cartridges. The gold version has been described as the "holy grail" of console game collecting,[6] similar to items from other collectible hobbies, such as the T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, or the Action Comics #1 comic book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_World_Championships

Still...
This is beyond ridiculous. Maybe the buyer wont pay and it never happens.
(and I guess Stadium Events is THE rarest... oops lol)

My goodness, a grey Nintendo world championship cartridge in perfect condition is like 6 or 7K, tops. The gold one goes for 20K. The Stadium Events game goes for double that, about 40K, or 10K just for the box all by itself. This one would be a new record by a long shot for a rare cartridge video game.

Why do collectors buy such dumb shit? You can't even look at it.

I agree, but the same can be asked of anything you or I buy. Different strokes for different folks!

The things that people want to collect really baffle me. Especially considering how much they'll pay. I really shouldn't judge though. I still have an HD DVD collection

I used to bid on Jesse Ventura Porsche and this one van with graffiti on it by R. Crumb

I won of the auctions but never paid....
That is when ebay was fun =)

Even if the seller doesn't get the money for some reason?

No. They don't get money if it isn't actually sold. You do have to pay a listing fee I think, so they still make some money.

When I showed my wife the auction she was clueless, so I used The Wizard to explain it.

She was still clueless and didn't care.

Yea... Pretty sure the news articles I had read about this auction said it would probably end up going for $6,000 to $8,000 going by past sales.

Good, it sucks. But then again, a lot of stuff that sucks happens to be rare.

Doesn't work at all, but they only made a couple? Rare as shit, time to pay out the ass.

Ugly as fuck? Doesn't matter, they made 2, buy it now.

agreed just bogus bids the cart mint isn't worth any where near that.

sadly ebay is the bane of the retro gaming collection world, then throw in VGA and shill bidding and you get a cluster of idiots who think their items are worth millions.

When the media gets involved, it just makes everyone go out and grab anything with Nintendo on it (luckily Sega has been spared this fate) and think its gold....

Normally those pay to bid sites are a scam but in cases like this I think something like that is needed.
