HOT Samsung PN60F5300AFXZA 60" Plasma $799 @ BB

Most likely because 240hz models are starting to arrive.

How is this set for gaming?

My kid's Xbox One looks fabulous on this screen. Plasma screens are 600hz, so there's no tearing or ghosting. They just don't do well in brightly lit rooms.

Can someone comment on the 51 inch model? Is it the exact same as the 60 but smaller? Also, what is the reliability of led vs plasma?
Is bj place trust worthy retailer?

Long-term a led is probably going to last longer than a plasma since it has far fewer parts (less to go wrong) and less heat output. Some of the older plasma's ran very hot.

Yep. The best Plasma maker on the planet threw in the towel.

This is so disappointing. I bought a 50" 720P LG plasma to tie me over and I really wish I'd of bought a nice 60" 1080P Panasonic. Now what am I gonna do? :(

It's sort of like how incandescent light bulbs might go away. CCFL's give me headaches and LED's just don't look right.

One more...apparently Nvidia's new "Green Light" program is putting an end to overclocking.

My friend has that 51 inch Samsung plasma, it's a very nice set for the price just need a dark room to put it in. I myself am getting the 60 sharp aquos for $749 if I don't find anything led cheaper from a good company

Bman why are you getting led and not plasma? Is sharp aquos a better brand over the others?

I had a 52 inch samsung plasma that was amazing but I bought the 720p version, should have spent the extra $150 for 1080p and I would've kept it. It also doubled as a space heater :D.

I don't want to deal with the glare honestly. Its much easier with a LCD/led tv if you have a fair amount of light in the room. I do have a 43inch Samsung plasma in my room but it has a window in there behind the TV so the glare doesn't bother me. I have tried putting it in my living room and the glare is unbearable so I use a vizio LCD in the living room since there is a lot of light.

I'd really have to move furniture around to be able to use a plasma in the living room. Not sure I want to do all that. Maybe one day when I get some spare time I'll give it a try. I really do like plasma TVs tho, the picture quality on them is amazing

If you are buying an LED lit LCD, don't get edge lit. Look for "full array" or "direct lit". They have more of the LED bars, and are positioned behind the panel rather then the sides. The TVs aren't as thin, but they have better uniformity, and no glowing corners.

For Samsung any models with an H in it, like UN55FH6030 (the biggest and best direct lit LED they have). Its been around $750-800 and is 3D.

If I wasn't buying plasma for a specific reason, that's really the only LED model Id buy (since I like 3D). If you don't care about 3D, the Samsung FH6003 should be the same other wise, and comes in 60in. LG has a few that are nice as well, though LG sets are pretty much always warmer colored then Samsung and I find them harder to calibrate.

Mine runs pretty cool.

This is a Transition TV for me. I need 2-3 years out of it and I'm happy. After that, I'm sure Plasma will be dead (Like DLP :() and 4K TV's will have come way down in price and way up in quality.

I'm not even remotely interested in a 4K right now. They are expensive, and frankly they don't perform well at all at real 4K resolutions. Not to mention there's basically no content.

3 years should be enough for them to catch up.

I really hate the idea of an LED TV though. I'm not crazy about them. I hope Plasma can make a huge come-back somehow. If they can get 4K out of them at a reasonable cost, the refresh won't be an issue!

I felt the same way when Samsung (and now Mitsubishi) dropped DLP. There are NO DLP TV makers any more. Only projectors.

I did find an LED Bulb that is actually quite good. I got it at Walmart, and a 60 watt equiv. was around $12 I believe. Unfortunately I threw the box away, but it was a GE I think.

The color is quite warm and is almost exactly like an incandescent. Very nice. I know what you mean about most LED bulbs though. I have a couple of those too and they that cold, bluish/white light sucks eggs.

If you want to know what it is, PM me and remind me and the next time I go to Wally World I'll look and get the brand/model for you.

The 50" version of the Sammy 5300 and 5500 uses a standard Plasma display (as does the 64" versions of the same).

The 60" version (only) uses a Pentile Plasma Display.

Whether that is good or bad I can't tell you. Plasma Purists rant and rave and say it 's shit, cheating, false advertising, etc..., but frankly it's very complex technology and as far as I'm concerned all their bullshit is conjecture, guessing, and total misunderstanding of the technology. And I'll be damned if I can tell the difference. The goal of Pentile Matrix displays is to reduce power and improve brightness.

You can usually tell something has a Pentile display as it will probably say "1080P (vertical)" on the box instead of just 1080P.

So what is the Horizontal resolution? Fracked if I know. I can't find a reference for it anywhere. I'm beginning to believe it's one of those things that has no fixed definition (like variable bit-rate MP3).

All I know is it looks great to me :)

So the 51 and 60 inch are the same in picture quality and reliability? For the most part will an led last longer than plasma and what is a good led atm?

Most displays will last plenty long enough to live out their useful life without a problem. Overall the failure rate on displays is pretty low, and if there is a problem people would know about it. For example Vizio put out a smart TV range a couple years ago that was failing all the time, and they end up extending the warranties on all of those and replacing parts in them with new revision hardware when they failed. Plus if any TV dies in 8 years, you probably won't care when new 4K TVs will be all over the place and even cheaper than 1080P TVs are now. And those TVs will probably be OLED or some other new tech.

Across product lines, 99% of the time the circuity and firmware is the same for the different size. So a 32 inch Samsung ES6500 TV and a 75 inch Samsung ES6500 are going to be feature identical and only vary in the screen size.

Now with these Samsung plasma TVs, the 60 inch models actually have a PenTile pixel arrangement while the 51 inch models have a normal RGB pixel arrangement. If you get right up on the TV, the 51 inch version will look better for things like games. From a normal viewing distance, you won't be able to tell really. Plenty of people use smartphones with PenTile displays and they have zero complaints.

There is a 60 inch sharp aquos that is only $749.99 right now, it's not a smart TV but who really uses that shit anyways? My vizio is a smart TV and I literally never use it because my xbox one does my Netflix for me

Well I plan to have the tv connected to my computer so smart tv is useless..I just don't want to spend to much. Right now the 51 inch Samsung plasma is what I'm leaning for but no place had it at bjs price of 579....that store is not around here and I don't think anyone will match their price either...

BJs is a membership store like Sam's Club and Costco. They can't be priced matched at most places because of the membership needed.

Ah I see so without a membership you can't get that low price? Would be nice if someone had it even for 599

Also these wholesale clubs always get unique model numbers, so other stores don't have to price match them. In Best Buy, the TV is a 5300. In wholesale clubs, it is a 5350.

If you are going to use it for media and gaming, this would be fine. If you want to use it for desktop computer where certain screen elements won't move, plasma is a bad idea for this due to image retention.

My Costco has the Samsung PN60F5350 for $750 after $100 instant rebate, so I picked one up. Supposed to be same TV but with warehouse model number.

I bought the 60" sharps over the last week and returned both of them, as well as the 50" I bought. Some of them had massive audio problems, or just didnt look great. The samsung plasma in this thread is ok, IMHO if you have a microcenter near you pick up a LG 60LN6150. I got that on Saturday and have been massively happy with it.

I should have mentioned, Costco also had the 51" model for $550 after a $50 instant rebate. Price for screen area same as the 60" for $750.

The 51 and 64 are the same. The 60 is different.

I don't think there is anything wrong with any of them.

One of my pieces of equipment in the Navy back in the 80's had a Plasma display. The old-school orange kind LOL

It was about 18" wide, and 24" tall. It was basically a big ass control system, so most of it was displaying the same thing all the time.

I never did see any burn in on it.

Now, that 1.5 X 2 foot piece of glass was $78,000 just for the panel if it broke, so it may have been "special" :)

When we saw the price of that glass in the parts list, we hand-built a cover for it quick LOL

It is identical except for the model number and the use o different wording for the "Clear Vision" tech.

Plasma's look like utter shit in the store. They should all be displayed in the dark "High End" section (like Magnolia) and never in the open TV Pit.

And most of BB's running TV demo has a solid white background, which ALL Plasma's crunch by design.

Oh dont get me wrong I love plasmas. I have an old 60" LG plasma in my living room. I wanted the Panasonic ST60 but you cant find them anymore, the TV I just bought goes into my bedroom which tends to be extremely bright because its facing the sun which causes extreme glare on plasma TVs because of the glass. I still think though out of the box the LG I just got for $900 is better than the Samsung in this thread for my use. I believe this deal is dead as of today.

So plasma with light in the room is no good? Also hooking the plasma up to tv wont work well as led?
