Facebook has posted a lighthearted response to a recent article that claimed the social network would lose 80% of its user base by 2017.

We don’t really think Princeton or the world’s air supply is going anywhere soon. We love Princeton (and air). As data scientists, we wanted to give a fun reminder that not all research is created equal – and some methods of analysis lead to pretty crazy conclusions.

Eh - I'm more and more inclined to delete my facebook account (or at least not log into it but once a month)

I was one of the original college kids who got to use it when it started rolling out to top universities. Back when you had to have an edu address. Now? it's just a place where friends or former friends can post pictures of their ugly babies or their dogs. None of which interest me. I specifically deleted a crap ton of people, down to something like 55 friends... and even with that few people, the news feed is still crammed with useless shit.

For a single white guy aged 32, Facebook has absolutely zero use for me anymore it seems.

I love FB's response. First, I don't care much about FB. I tended to use it primarily to share photos, but I've found G+ photos to be far more preferable as time goes on.

But their response pokes so much fun at the poor use of studies and statistics that's become pervasive in internet reporting.

Until the next big thing in social networking shows up, Facebook will be around for a while.

We all know who is going to benefit from FB's recent study

Misquote on the reply from Facebook. I think they actually said:

We don’t really think Princeton or, as the former CEO of Myspace once said, "the world’s air supply is going anywhere soon." We love Princeton (and air). As data scientists, we wanted to give a fun reminder that not all research is created equal – and some methods of analysis lead to pretty crazy conclusions.
