Are there computer speakers better than this?

I would keep them, and buy a sub for a less flat sound.

I added a SBX10 to my BX5s, and man now I can listen to white people and black people music from the same set of speakers.

Do you really want a receiver that much? It just takes up space. Unless you really need the many inputs flexibility...

I have a feeling that you are just bored and feel like spending money :) Nothing wrong with that, but I don't think you will get a noticeable upgrade with your budget. You are looking at a mid-range (don't expect a top of the line DAC), probably used receiver and a pair of second-hand bookshelves where you are taking a gamble on their condition (nobody knows how much the previous owner abused them).

If you are willing to stretch your budget, M-Audio is about to release this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/922786-REG/m_audio_m3eightx110_m3_8_3_way_amplified.html

for $300/each. Note the 8" woofer and that the critical frequency range is handled by a coaxial driver. They have both balanced and unbalanced inputs so you have some source flexibility. Nobody knows how good they are yet, so I'd wait for some reviews and early adopter impressions.
There should be many other interesting options in the $500-700/pair range.

Generally, I would look into entry-level active studio monitors over a bookshelves-and-amp combo. IMO they win both in convenience and bang for the buck, and are specifically designed for near-field operation. I assume you will just put them on your desk?

Oops, my bad.

In that case I'd lurk on audiogon and try to get a couple bookshelves in a decent condition in your price range. Since you are getting rid of the sub, I wouldn't go smaller than a 6" woofer. Good luck!

Yeah, what others are saying, keep the M-Audio Studiophile LX4 2.1 setup. I have them myself and they are great. GF now uses them but you are not going to be able to replace the quality of sound and value the Studiophiles give you if your budget is $150.

I was in the same boat as you last year. I wanted to upgrade and gave myself a $150 - $200 budget. So I started looking and guess what? I couldn't find jack shit in that price range that would one up the Studiophiles. So I bit the bullet and gave myself a budget of $300 and was able to find a very nice pair, almost near KRK G2 8's. A month later, I invested in some really nice stands for $99 and I couldn't be more pleased.

Don't half ass do whatever it is you are going to do. Consider spending more which if you think about it is only realistic coming from where you currently sit in the speaker dept.

What is your view of the above compares to Audio Engine 5+ ?

Happy Hopping:

I have no opinion :) I never heard the m-audios (nobody did except for reporters listening to pre-production samples at audio shows). I went to the New York audio show just recently and saw the audioengine speakers, but did not really listen to them attentively.

On paper, I would think the big new M-audios have the advantage of the coaxial tweeter/midrange and a bigger woofer. They are, comparatively speaking, inexpensive at $600/pair, so who knows about the quality of the drivers. But they could be great, no way to tell now.

Basically, nobody knows for sure until comparing both in their own room, which is easier said than done in the real world :(.

For the money I would say:
Emotiva Pro airmotiv
audioengine 5+

(Seems quite a few people like the Emotiva better than the audioengine which is why I list them first.)

The Emotiva are going to sound better. Very good speakers for the money. Same as all of their products.

FWIW, I got fed up waiting for the Swans to come back in stock and pulled the trigger on a pair of Emotiva Airmotiv 4's for near-field desktop use.

here is what I have now...

I went to the thrift store and bought a cool little Realistic SA-101 Stereo Amplifier. It gives me the inputs I need. Now, I just need some decent speakers for it. I sold the M-Audio 2.1's I had, as well as the sony receiver. I appreciate your advice.

I really don't want to spend more than around ~$50 used for a set for this amp. I love the little amp...got it with two realistic speakers (which are awful), as well as a tuner. Whoever gave it to goodwill must of kept it in pristine shape. Everything works...all for $8.00.

$50? Just keep looking at craigslist and the thrift store. If you have the room for it, I would strongly consider some larger, vintage full sized speakers.

thank you for bringing out the M-Audio M3-8. I bought it in Christmas and just have time to install it over the weekend. Very fantastic sound. Excellent find

Happy Hopping: congrats, glad you like them. I still have not seen them in the flesh, lol. Using the Equator D5 myself -- coaxial speakers work quite well in a desktop setup IMO.
