Shell Shocker M500 240GB $129.99 @ egg (1pm Pacific)

TigerDirect has 240GB Crucial M500 2.5" SATA III Internal Solid State Drive SSD (CT240M500SSD1) for $150 - $30 Crucial rebate - $10 off $50 TigerDirect rebate = $110. Shipping starts at ~$4 and varies depending on your zip code. Thanks SwiftDW

30 MIR so YMMV :)

Ripped from Slickdeals

That's mail in rebates to two companies though. The other deal seems better, but then found that amazon is selling the 480 gig for $259. That's pretty damn affordable. :D

From TD, which I have a b&m in my state, with shipping and tax it comes to $166.93 less $40 in MIR so 126.93. So, if Newegg doesn't tax in your area, you're at a $3.03 more expense for no MIR.

Would I see any real world performance upgrades coming from a Crucial M4 128gb? Other then the size.

Writes are considerably faster on the newer generation, plus you'll have the usual write speed bump associated with moving from a lower capacity 128GB (less NAND channels?) to 240GB drive.

I bet the real world impact is negligible though.

and the m500 got decent reviews, but the one complaint was the price point as for a little more you could get an Evo drive which did perform a little better.

In for a 240Gig drive

the 480 would of been nice, but I don't need that much room yet for SSD.

I saw the 960 for $479 somewhere the other day. 50 cents a gig, but still too rich for my blood and not a big discount (20%) off MSRP so I didn't post it.

This deal on the 240 @ 119, although still 50 cents a gig is more like 45% off MSRP which is pretty darn good. I'd get one if I were in the market for more SSD space, but currently I need more mass storage, rather than the fast stuff.

I don't believe that's true in this case as I think the number of NAND channels is the same. The m500 uses higher density NAND so the 256 would have the same number of chips as the m4 128.

The 960GB is $460 on Amazon today and the 480GB is $260. You definitely don't want the 120GB, its performance nose dives because it only has 8 nand packages. Even 240GB doesn't have the write performance on the 480/960GB either.

I'm in. Just sold my spare Sammy 830 128 today...upgrade with some RAID action! woot!

(On a side note, was lookin earlier and noticed the new OCZ Vertex 460 240gb is open for preorder at the egg for $139.99. Read some reviews and seems the only issue anyone really has is the future of OCZ and Toshiba's customer support)

Interesting...I think you're right. It's NAND packages per channel that's driving the speed difference within each generation of drives, and controller improvements and NAND characteristics that are driving the speed difference between current and prior generations drives.

Surprised not OOS yet.

EDIT : Amazon officially price matched. I would advise whoever is still interested to buy it from amazon! I somewhat regret that I didn't -.-

Just got my new M500, plugged it in, imaged by OS over from an intel SSD, checked it out with HDTune and this.....

:( so sad! i get the one drive that seemed to slip through QC..

Guess i am sending it back to Amazon for an exchange, sucks living in Costa Rica with this stuff when it does happen, not that it happens often, only had to ever send 1 thing back before to the U.S.

Sorry to hear, mine showed up and checked good for me. Using it right now for my game drive.

Here is the answer back from them, not sure if true, or a common practice?

Hello Matthew,

Thank you for your email.

Both traditional hard drives and SSDs will have a number of bad sectors as standard, however before a hard drive leaves the factory, the number of bad sectors is set to zero.

The industry standard for SSDs is different and the bad sectors count is not reset. This can make some SMART reporting tools believe the drive has a problem and is about to fail when in reality it is fine.

The best way to gauge an SSDs health is through its actual performance. If you are experiencing any crashing or performance issues with the SSD, please let us know and we can provide support on these.

There are several free tools such as Crystal Disk Info, Anvil and AS SSD that you can use to gauge the performance and health of your SSD.

Please also let us know if we can offer additional assistance or advice.

HDTune does not support the new firmware.

Download the CrystalDiskInfo it has support for the MU03 firmware. You probably have ZERO errors.
