Anyone still going to purchase P2815Q (dell $700 4k) monitor?

Even after the 30hz news?

I'm still considering it. Anyone think it might do 120hz @ 1080p like the Seiki monitors? And is there any possibility they implement MST in the future since it already has a DP1.2 or will that never happen?

30hz sucks pretty bad even for desktop work and I'm not sure why you would want to buy a 4K monitor for 1080p. I would be surprised if it does 120hz at 1080p too, most 4K monitors(not TVs) don't accept the input.

MST upgrade is unlikely since MST requires a bunch of specialized hardware built into the monitor(extra tcon, different wiring, MST hub) and it would be pretty surprising if they were paying for that hardware and extra manufacturing costs and then just... leaving it disabled in software.

Seems pointless to pay 700 for a tn panel when you can get a larger 4k va panel seiki for like 500. Also va panel 4k hdmi 2.0 tvs under 1000 are scheduled for q1 2014. Its a bad deal no matter how you look at it.

ya but those seiki's are TV's not monitors so there's a big difference in PQ.. and too large for some people like me.

Why not get the Asus PB287Q? Roughly equivalent in price, same panel type, size, but it also happens to do 60Hz.

I wouldn't buy a 4k monitor that does 30Hz. Paying big bucks for something sub par. Not gonna do it. Just me though.

Honestly I am not yet convinced it is only 30Hz. Not until it is released by dell and confirmed. I just don't see them putting DP on it and it only being 30Hz. I think the guy forbes talked to simply misinformed incorrect. I think there would be just too much outcry from users who did not realize it was 30Hz who bought it from dell and were super pissed after.

I may be wrong but that is just my opinion.

there are videos about it on CES the dell rep says it's 30hz. check out the tek syndicate video.

Yeah that doesn't look good as the guy seems to know what he is talking about but I am sorry I will take a $400 39 inch S-MVA seiki (even if it is a TV) over a $799 28 inch TN PoS anyday of the week.

Try 30Hz on whatever monitor you have now. You will see that is it not usable at any resolution no matter what you read on the internet.

This pre 4k displays gonna suck anyway. Better wait a year.

Well has anyone seen a PC hooked up in person to make this call that 30hz is unusable desktop wise on 4K or is this just speculation? I couldn't see Dell releasing a monitor businesses will buy that would be completely unusable guys.

This...

Wait for the second gen panels with DP 1.3. I wouldn't get an MST panel even if it was dirt cheap.

Depends on the person I would say. 30Hz isn't unusable if all you're doing is looking at stock charts on the monitor.

And you know this from 6+months experience working multiple 4k displays running at 30Hz? Which one(s) are you using (Or were using?) I'm interested in hearing your experience as it differs from mine by at least an order or magnitude.

Possibly the most uninformed opinion I've seen thus far this year.

same here. Hell... I honestly wouldn't touch it for even half that.

30Hz is a deal breaker for anything other than desktop work (and even then, it would still bug the crap out of me). I'm content with 1440p until the technology matures a bit.

As long as it supports 4:4:4 subsampling there's only a difference in picture quality if it's impossible to deactivate noise reduction and sharpening features.
Other than added electronic ballast (tuner etc.) there's no difference between a TV and a PC-monitor panel... other than that the TVs are more often VA variants with better contrast.

.. 30Hz might be OK for relatively static stuff but for me TN is a direct disqualification.

Why do you say that? I tend to agree with the posters that it's not a great refresh rate to use, even for general desktop use, unless you don't mind choppy motion/animation. It will be noticeable by most people... especially for those that currently use a 120Hz display.

I'm at the point where I don't even like using 60Hz displays anymore, and I'm certainly not alone... 30Hz would be a huge step backwards. 30Hz might not bother you, but that doesn't mean it doesn't bother other people.

I used it on the Asus PQ321 when I got it about 6 months ago.. Why on earth I would subject myself to multiple months of severe motion blur for no reason, I'm not sure. I used it that way for about an hour, and it was terribly annoying, especially next to a proper 60hz monitor.

It's not like it's subtle or anything, it's extremely obvious. "Why does my mouse pointer look like it has mouse trail turned on?" is the first thing that comes to mind :p

Aw nutz, that's disappointing.

I guess the Asus is going to be the one to get.

How so? I have tried 4K @ 30Hz on a Dell and Asus LCD and it's not usable. Try moving the mouse, the cursor doesn't even track normally. Like I said a simple test of whether or not you can stand to use 30Hz is to try it on your current LCD now. If it doesn't bother you then great go for it, no one is stopping you. But be aware of the limitations before you spend your money on an inferior product.

Cheers mate.

Too bad ASUS RMA is terrible to non-existent.

I thought this was going to be great until I saw the 30Hz. Lets see what Dell's got next year or if HP or Lenovo come up with something.

Are there any coupons to take advantage of to bring the price down? And you can return it in 30 days for free right? I still think I'm going to order it.. and if the 30hz is that bad just return it.

Really surprises me they have a display marketed as a monitor at only 30Hz. I think a lot of people aren't going to notice that, order it, and be pissed.

I kind of almost want to order one just to test it to see if it can be OC'd at all. There are much better/cheaper 30 Hz options out there IMHO especially considering its TN.

I went ahead and ordered one. Ship 2/14 -.-. I'll let u guys know if it OC's at all and anything else. If it sucks i'll just return it lol.

Everytime I order from Dell they always piss me off. Did same thing with my PS4.

"in stock ships in 1 business day"

order product..
"estimated ship is 3 weeks from now"

lol?

This + 1

The seiki 39" and 50" come to mind as better options for cheaper.

The seiki ones are just too big though, 50" monitor is ridiculous. 39 is too big for me as well.

I've seen those in person and they look more like TV's to me rather than a monitor but idk. And the color accuracy was pretty much garbage. Either way I figured there's basically 0 risk here, if it's disappointing I'll just return it and get my money back. Hopefully it ships soon.

I still don't get why it doesn't have 60hz via MST. It even has a DP out for daisy chaining using MST..

For those that decided to get the monitor, can you please check out gaming, videos i.e. blu-ray, 4k videos too, youtube, photos, web browsing, etc. Thanks! :D

30Hz flickers on the desktop when you mouse over stuff though, that's bad for your eyes. I would consider that "effectively unusable" unless you want to be paying some visits to the optometrist.

Are the colors worse than a TN panel though?
