Why not skip the computer and go straight into our brains! Thanks to OEM for the link.

While most of the software is inserted by gaining access to computer networks, the N.S.A. has increasingly made use of a secret technology that enables it to enter and alter data in computers even if they are not connected to the Internet, according to N.S.A. documents, computer experts and American officials.

It's like with anything. If someone wants something bad enough, they'll get it. It's just how bad do they want YOUR stuff? It doesn't make it right. Not at all. But, criminal or government, they will get what they want if they want it bad enough.

Plenty of money to spy on the world.
No money to fix crumbling roads and bridges

Well that's not creepy or anything. Agreed panhead. How about putting some of this endless pool of snooping cash to work in a more constructive manner. But it's all about keeping us safe.....of course. Just like we've always been at war with Eurasia.

I did not drywall my server room yet, is it seriously time to start considering lead walls for our computer rooms? This is just getting ridiculous how far they'll go. And that's with your tax dollars! That's equivalent to a criminal killing you with your own firearm.

When you say NSA, I think CSEC... they are as much of a threat to us in Canada too given they work together.

There needs to be an open source effort towards fully open source computing platform, and this needs to be based outside of the US or any of the spy countries. I imagine when they say "computer" they really mean motherboard, or other every day devices that we buy. perhaps even USB cables themselves could have these embedded. So building our own computers is probably not even any help to stop this stuff.

Heck they will probably just embed this right in hard drives.

Meh whatever. They hafta stick their transmitter junk into a USB port or plant it in a computer somewhere. Now brain reading would be awesome. They could sell stuff like that through Cat Fancy and I could use it to know when my cat is up to something nefarious.

seems more of a scare tactic. USB radio transceiver, nothing new and even the title is scary sounding.

If anyone has local access to your pc, very little can protect it, So just make sure no one breaks in and there isnt a creepy black van sitting on the street day after day lol

Wait are they physically sticking this into random computers? They make it sound like this stuff is shipped with computers/devices. So you go to buy a laptop or motherboard or even USB flash drive and this will be embedded in it already.

Then again, one of the advantages of everything being made in China is that the NSA does not have much jurisdiction there so I guess the odds of stuff being embedded into devices we buy is probably slim. At least in a non obvious way. I suppose machines could go through a special factory in the US where they just solder on a chip or w/e but that would be easier to find than if it's embeded as part of the whole circuit board.

Yes they have to actually get to your pc to do so. If they just shipped with it, there would need to be some way to communicate to the NSA the unique ID of the transmitter and the name/SS# of the person who bought it and is using it because the transmitter would be short range due to the limits of USB supplied power. I believe if they have enough on someone to plant this device on their pc, they are probably not far from just arresting them anways.

All the more reason to a) Build your own computers, and b) install copper mesh in the walls around your office space. :)

Yes, it's a physical device added to the computers. Remember the article the other day where they have sometimes intercepted shipments of IT equipment in mid delivery and compromised the system, this is what they are doing.

But, just as this article says, they do this to rivals and enemies, not to us. This article says it clearly, this is what they are doing to the other guys.

So Red Squirrel, you are close...
That's equivalent to a criminal killing you with your own firearm.
It's actually equivalent to a getting an enemy soldier to talk to us at the same time he is reporting to his commander.

There is some difference as you might note.

Sure, because once the data leaves your house and arrives at your ISP to be relayed wherever over how many different switches, satellites, servers, and networks, it's certainly safe then.

Makes Google look like amateurs when it comes to data collection. Who's the evil one NOW, bitches. LOL. :D

Darunion, do you understand the difference between law enforcement and intelligence operations?

I am not saying that you out and out wrong, but this shows you don't really understand things it seems.

The NSA does foreign Intelligence Surveillance. Just like airplanes and satellites fly around and take pictures of military bases and missile systems, and stuff, the NSA listens to the government, military, and corporate communications of most countries in the world. They also listen to organizations some of which are terrorist groups who may have people scattered in many countries, and some try to set up in the US as well.

The FBI is responsible for Anti-Terrorism, Espionage, etc, so if you get spies or terrorists in the US, then yes, they might be found, identified, and arrested. But that is a small part of a very big picture, the rest of it is mostly focused on foreign military capability. It's all about knowing everything we can about what everyone else can do, and what they might be up to at any given time.

So for the most part this isn't about gathering evidence to arrest someone. It's about knowing that country A just sold super-swatter anti-aircraft missiles to country B so now we know if we have to fight with country B, we need to keep those super-swatter missiles in mind so they don't kill our pilots with them. This stuff goes on all the time, it never ends, and we better not stop cause the world can change pretty damn fast and you don't want to be sucking hind tit when it does.

After reading the article, I realized this is very close to what the movie, "Sneakers", was about.

CETEC ASTRONOMY

TOO MANY SECRETS

One thing that is perfectly clear, from his refusal to rein in the NSA and abuse of our welfare and food stamp systems to his disregard for proper protection of US assets in foreign countries (Lybia, Iraq, Afghanistan) is that President Obama is more interested in power here at home than he is in the well being of the citizens.

I say built your own PC. Order parts from only authenticated stores. Make sure when the product arrives it is still in factory SEALED. Inspect your pc components carefully. Lets see how long before someone get hold of Western Digital and start embedding these software.

Ahh, I mostly agree. Of course I don't think the NSA needs to be reigned in, I just think Snowden's Document theft has allowed the media to have a field day in misleading people into thinking the NSA is doing things that they really are not doing.

But yes, I agree, the President doesn't like what America is and was, he wants to fundamentally change it and his first order of business has been to do everything in his power to disrupt all the old institutions of power that have defined this country in the past while establishing new institutions that will continue his work and make it easier to get more like him into office in the future.

Aren't you pretty much talking to a whole lot of people who already do exactly this?

Snow removal is one visible item they've slashed from the budget around here. For as long as I can remember they'd be out there at the slightest sign of snow/ice clearing off the local highways and roads, applying salt or brine. The last two or three storms, they didn't start the trucks until the snow packed into a sheet on the roads, and even then they didn't really do shit because it was too late.

Wow. Nice shilling for the NSA. Disregard the man behind the curtain!

Isn't the DOT stuff mostly paid for with state taxes? I think I heard once that there was some kind of federal money that was involved, but most of the roads are kept after by individual state governments so that's sorta outside the alphabet soup agency funding.

They are going to need a lot more money, because the shills they bought really really suck at it. For alleged experts on psi-ops I guess they are lulling us into a false sense of security by pretending to be dopes.

One question? With Obama all "power" hungry and having all this "power", please explain how a guy who can't get the most elementary piece of legislation passed, has anything remotely describable as "power".

For instance just getting Congress to continue to pay unemployment benefits to the unemployed as they have for 40 previous years. Money from the unemployment insurance fund that employers pay into for the express purpose of keeping people fed and in their homes during a temporary employment crisis. You'd think a guy so "power" hungry and so "powerful" as to be altering the very fabric of existence in America, could at least keep the unemployed from starving. Or is this 11th Dimensional Chess by a Master Bond Villain?

If so, where's his cat?

Meantime, the NSA is laughing at all these conversations .... because they are listening to them all.

See next quote, no need for lead when you can just build a Faraday cage into your house, of course kiss your cell usage in the house goodbye, not to mention WiFi...

<------ you are not supposed to know that, I see black black helicopters In your future

Nub they clearly come from ham radio frequencies bouncing off the stratosphere from project west ford.

I've tested the faraday cage concept out of curiosity, I don't think it works like people think.

Throw your cell in the microwave (a basic faraday cage). Works just fine (the cellular as well as wifi). Wrap it in foil, works just fine too. You need something pretty thick. Maybe it also has to be magnetic like steel, though lead is not magnetic and I know they use that in hospitals.

How long did you cook it in the microwave if it still works fine and what setting was the microwave on? I think running it on defrost for like 30 seconds might not break a phone, but I'd be completely amazed if you could take it out and still use it after 4 minutes on high.

Uhh, yeah, the article is bullshit and the technology - if it exists at all - won't work in the real world.

End of story.

You have to use the pizza setting, it actually causes the phone to dial out and order pizza. :p

SonicTron, I am just telling you how I see it based on my life and experience. Explain why you seem to disagree, what's your experience on the subject?

This is starting to get into tin foil hate territory that is actually real.
Amaroth, I am not really aiming this at you or attacking you, your message is just an easy quote to grab.

Scarey shit huh, imagine that they were so smart that they figured out how to imbed a small transmitter into a USB cable that can send a very low powered signal that can be intercepted as far as a just a few miles away. And that the data that is being sent over that cable to your USB hard drive or USB connected router/modem is being transmitted all the way .... well.... a few blocks away.

Face it, it's not the tech, it's the deviously simple idea that they resorted to something so basic as a bug in a data cable and somehow acording to this writer it's an amazing feat of spy craft.
