Silverstone throws its hat in the ring for a Steambox style mITX case

Interesting that you mention that on this case as well as my own.

I saw the threads one after the other.

It seems inaccurate. For the sake of others I'll copy my response from my worklog to the same comment:

Fair enough in your case, but I look at the box I have sitting under my TV. It's running WSE2012 and isn't a games box but I still have a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse plugged into it. They take up both the front USB ports. For a games box, I'd need to plug in my wired or wireless gamepad, and so would whoever I'm playing. I don't want to go messing round the back of the box - and I particularly don't want my 11-yo nephew messing around there - and having a hub is just extra mess.

Because if they're on the back, they'll be shielded by the unit; if they're on the front they have line-of-sight to the devices.
I can attest to this. Specifically on my thick aluminum case: there is a computer and over 8mm of solid aluminum the radio signals must penetrate if I put the USB receiver on the back I/O. So if I put the Logitech Unified receiver on the back, the signal won't reach the couch consistently.

But like many, I have both keyboard and mouse on 1 USB receiver (I have a K400 and MX Performance mouse Unified) so I just put it on the front.

Are your keyboard and mouse both Logitech than can be Unified to one USB receiver? That would simplify things if so.

In the instance you game (which it doesn't sound like you do on your aforementioned machine): Depending on what wireless controller you can put multiple controls on 1 receiver, so only 1 USB port required. And for wired, just run them off a hub that you only bring out with the wired controllers. You mention a hub as extra mess, but so are wired controllers. :)

Anyways, 2 USB ports on HTPCs and the up and coming "steambox" type boxes seems to be common place. Actually, it seems to be common place on even towers and mini towers.

No they're not both from the same manufacturer, and the point is that they shouldn't need to be. And the same goes for the gamepads. Part of having your own box means being able to mix and match.

Fair enough, just thought I'd ask.

Don't get me wrong: you've done an amazing job in your build, but you did integrate the X-box controller, and as a console box, the Silverstone has not, and needs to compensate. And that means extra front USB ports. As an aside, I'll note that they similarly fail on their full-size cases: my FT02 only has 2x USB 3 ports on the front top where I really need 2x USB 3 and 2x USB 2.

True. Difference being, with a tower, such as yours (cool fanless build btw), you can easily add extra USB ports via 3.5" or 5.25" front panel setup. Not easily done on cases such as Silverstone's take on the steambox type case. Not without some DIYing.

why does the xbox wireless adaptor need to be plugged in on the front of the case? It has a retardedly long usb cable.

That's assuming he is using an xbox 360 wireless receiver. He may not be. Of course, along the same lines, a short USB extension would essentially be the same thing on a USB dongle-type receiver of any kind (gamepad, mouse, keyboard, etc.).

Who needs line of site for RF dongles? 1 foot isn't going to make a big difference.

You've never used RF dongles if you don't think location is important. Especially the logitech dongles, they get finicky if they are placed on the rear of the device and you are more than 3 feet away.

Looks like Silverstone has a Milo-series alternative to the Raven: http://www.cowcotland.com/news/40079/2014-silverstone-ml07-mini-itx-salon-abordable.html

Apparently it has the same internal frame as the Raven, just a different exterior. It's a step in the right direction and the price is good but Digital Storm has hinted that they may sell the Bolt II chassis by itself so unless Silverstone makes a really nice looking Fortress variant I think I'll pass (plus the Bolt II chassis is manufactured in California!).

I think the designers at Silverstone have a thing for the Dark Knight. That's what I get when I see their cases.

These are great cases. I love the idea behind both of them, but they're too big for top-tier riser-card cases.

Silverstone could offer a case to rival Valve's excellent looking Steam Box, but they're moving towards the more accessible end of the spectrum (which makes sense, they're trying to move product). Same thing I would say about a lot of larger ITX cases: At least they're getting people interested in the SFF movement.

I'm going to wait for something smaller+better than the SG05, or just mod the hell out of my SG05.

If you want something smaller than SG05, LanGear infinity now sells for 60Eur, maybe it's worth it to check it out?

Didn't they (LanGear) do something amazingly sketchy and move to France awhile back?

That case looks nice and all, but I can't find any information on thermals, apparently it's limited to 140mm ATX PSUs (without modding, not sure what the max is), and it's only slightly smaller than the SG05.

Think I'll pass, but it's definitely interesting looking.

lol langear. blast from the past. that case started in this forum, from some guy in america. then he fell off the face of the earth.

yeah, one of the early home grown projects in [H], wonder what really happened? They only seems to ship to EU now

SG05 is still the best prive/performance imho
Very true. As far as basic mini ITX cases go, it does an all-around great job. Some water cooling capabilities, ODD if you so choose, fits wide variety of GPU, SSD/HDD mounting locations enough for basic setup, and still compact.

Still... there is something about the slim form factor that just appeals to many, myself included.

Like the looks of ML07, and hopefully can support weight of a monitor resting on it.

Hopefully it's not limited to black only. And if available in white, silver, etc. Also have the interior match unlike the SG05.

Wonder if anyone will make a custom riser so GPU fan same direction as CPU. So vent holes only needed on one side for both heat generating components.

That would just be a long ribbon cable. They exist.

According to mattinv, their manufacturing costs doubled and could no longer produce it in the US.

I can't imagine that he was being entirely truthful. Think about it: too expensive to mfg. in the US, so he goes to EU? That's not exactly moving in the right direction for reducing mfg. costs. While the cost is rising, the Asian market (China and Taiwan specifically are great for their type of product) is still less expensive than most any other region in the world to mfg.

The ML07 looks way nicer imo; I'll likely to use that case for my next build unless Digital Storm does sell the Bolt case by itself.

They will. Around summer, a rep stated on ocn not too long ago ;)

I'm really hoping Silverstone officially announces the ML07 at some point soon, even if it's only going to be released in the summer or whatever. I'm really already in the need for a better case (not that it's bad, just that it doesn't work with my TV stand) than my Coolermaster Elite, and depending on the wait I might have to get the RVZ01 in the meantime no matter how ugly I think it is.

The ML07 looks much nicer than the Raven.

I am not interested in either one, though - these cases are huge for this style layout. The SG05 continues to be very hard to beat.

See, I guess I only care about size to an extent. These are narrower than my other AV components (which are rack mount width at 19"), not too deep to stick off the back of my TV stand, and short enough to fit as well. That's my biggest concern.

Is the ML07 perfect? Definitely not. It could easily be smaller. But it meets the essentials for me at the very least.

I have built several computers with the sg05 and it is a terrific case. But it is a horrible option for this kind of job. I don't care that its smaller liter wise than this type of case, it is too tall and too wide to use in efficiently in a TV stand.

Tigerdirect has the rvz01 too

Waiting on amazon to get some in stock....
