Miners! Causing R290 R290X to be Overpriced

So are people still predicting the prices will ever come down?
AMD might as well start marketing themselves as the crypto-mining brand and ditch gaming altogether.

As long as mining stays profitable relative to the price of the card, the prices will never come down. AMD will release Hawaii "2.0" R9 390 and it will skyrocket +$100 over MSRP overnight just like everything else. I don't know exactly how mining works, but if people can increase their mining speed while also using the same amount of power (or less) then they have no reason not to upgrade... The card will pay for itself even faster.

How likely is someone with a bunch of server racks, say 50+ AMD cards, to strip down their whole setup and upgrade to new cards?

Gamers don't get to call the shots on GPUs, sorry.

If you want to point the finger at something/someone go point it at AMD and their partners. Bitcoin isn't new, they know full well their cards are the best for mining (at least right now). Them not having ramped up production even a year ago is foolish on their part.

If AMD stepped up with a crypto focused card, man they could sell a lot of those. The retailer gouging isn't helping AMD but if they had a crypto optimized card that sure would.

they have one its called the 7990. The only logical thing for AMD to do is find a high yield chip like the 7970/280x and slap more than 2 on it. Jack up the blower fan even more than on reference models and design a case and everything around having basically 4 7990's in a single rackmountable server.

It is LTC that is actually putting the GPU's to use and they require a large amount of fast RAM. The problem is AMD's R&D is actually shit so it would take them well over a year to just figure out how to build such a thing. I believe they are having issues pumping out a decent number of 290x capable chips so that is why I say the PREVIOUS gen is the way to go for such a card.

most of the new coins use scrypt, otherwise they will be flooded by ASICs, there are new coins coming out everyday and they can be compared with litecoin or bitcoin for profitability at coinchoose.com, those using sha256 are at the bottom even lower than bitcoin already.

Nvidia is in a bad spot if Crypto currency flourishes. In fact a whole bunch of companies are in a bad spot if crypto takes off.

If their r&d was shit, you wouldn't be mining, now would you?

nvidia is fine and crypto currency isn't going to take off in it's current form. If the controls and stability needed to make a currency viable were put in place, then the libertarian crowd price inflating it would abandon it.

Crypto currency is the tulip bulb fiasco all over againt.

Also some mining video cards are out of stock. I hope this will not lead to any scarcity. Anyways, I'm planning to buy R290X next week, been wondering how expensive AMD video cards now. Any suggestions?

Here's your suggestion... 2 x 270x > 1 290x. cheaper...cooler... better...

Save your gaming money for nvidia.... ;)

good news/bad news

good news

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-R9-290-GA...ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1389598866&sr=1-6

bad news is that is says it usually ships in 1-2 months, meaning they don't have any in the warehouses, and are waiting on the future, but it looks like people might be able to lock in that price for a custom 290.

More bad news, it should only be ~$450 max at MSRP. Other custom 290 cards are in the $420-450 MSRP range and so far I haven't seen a review on the MSI 290 Gaming yet. $70 over a reference 290 is hard to swallow.

I just paid 500 dollars for a reference 290, so it would be a lot easier to swallow than the current price points.

I gave up.
Couldn't do it.
Saw a Gigabyte Windforce 780 for 489 with free AC4 and found myself mindlessly clicking until I had bought it.

Oh well, I haven't had green in a couple years so that'll be fun plus I wanna go back and play some stuff with PhysX.

Never bought something sooo expensive with such mixed emotions.

The thought of SLI'ing the same card crossed my mind, it would actually be a better deal then the masterpass deals.
