GOG pulls Fallout 1, 2 & Tactics from their catalog

Bethesda threw a fit. Technically, it was still Interplay's call to offer them for free, but due to how IP law works, Bethesda still can have these taken down while the legality is hammered out. Zenimax/Bethesda are pretty shady, IMO.

I got all 3 for...$5 I think...a couple years ago, better make sure that folder is backed up

All those who acquired Fallout, Fallout 2, or Fallout Tactics on GOG.com prior to the date of removal (that is before Tuesday, December 31st 2013, at 3:59PM GMT), will still be able to download the games' install files (as well as the bonus content) via the "My Games" section of their user accounts. Gift-codes for these three games acquired in our recent giveaway are no longer valid. However, if you own a gift-code for any or all of them that was purchased outside of the said giveaway, you'll still be able to redeem it in the foreseeable future.

Fyi...since I was wondering if we can still download them after they pull them from their site.

Yeah, I bought them but never downloaded. Still show up in my games and available for download.

Exactly why one would want to buy games from GOG IMO, DRM free so you can keep a local copy and a backup somewhere without having to worry about some greedy company trying to take it away.

I've got them thru Steam, any chance that'll be an issue?

Doubt it. All of the other fallout games are available there and considering the originals are as well without any sort of notice I would assume Zenimax took Valve's money to keep it that way.

weren't they both free on GoG a few weeks ago in anticipation of it being removed from the GoG catalog...oh well at least they aren't being removed from Steam

Possibly. Steam removed Order of War: Challenge from people's game library. http://www.maximumpc.com/steam_removes_defunct_game_user_libraries2013

That's different. The game was pretty much a useless bunch of codes wasting HDD space as the publishers have shut down its server and you can no longer access it. The publishers then request that their game client be removed since it no longer works.

Fallout 1 and 2 are standalone game that doesn't require an online service to work

It is strictkly legal issue. Note the turn of the year. My understanding is interplay had the rights to sell them till Dec 31 2013. Those rights expired last night. It very well might be that Bethesda might allow GOG to sell them but I suspect that the two haven't chatted until the after interplay rights expired though I honestly don't know.

I.e, I don't think this is a case of Bethesda throwing a tantrum as other have indicated I think it is a simple agreement expiration.

Time will tell. If we see this as steam DRM exclusive, then Zenimax will threw a fit. If it comes back to GOG after a brief wait, then Zenimax's business isn't very competent at anticipating changes and keeping product available.

Or maybe... they will pull a Disney and "the vault" will be reopened at some later date. (Pun kinda intended)

Are we certain that these games actually use Steamworks DRM? They're not listed on any DRM-free Steam lost I'm aware of, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I know the GOG versions are completely Steam free, as I run them on my laptop that has never seen Steam. the GOG installers are a standalone all-inclusive single EXE file.

either way GOG announced at the start of the winter sale, when they were giving the games away for free, because they would not be able to sell them much longer.

I can confirm this. I DL'd everything I could with this Fallout deal. Glad I did it seems.

They were free, I got 'em :D

I wasn't aware that they were about to be removed. I just now started to download everything... so far so good!

Had to check where I had bought mine, I got mine via Steam, never downloaded. So downloading now. Tactics is downloading ok, but the other 2 stop and says "update required"? I'll play with this once the tactics is done.

Ah, never mind, it's fine. What I was seeing was I was queuing up the games for DL, and they'd kick each other around. Kinda odd that it's last added, first finished.

The games will still be available to download from your library if you already have them they just won't be selling them anymore because their sales agreement was with Interplay and distribution rights just transferred to Bethesda/Zenimax as part of the lawsuit settlement.

I think the giveaway for those games was Interplay giving the finger to Bethesda before their rights expired, GOG might have burned some bridges with Bethesda over this as well but they were never friendly to begin with so maybe neither of them really care.
