Hi, I'm trying to connect to a wifi network that's 600 feet away.

I'd like use the 5ghz band (trying for high throughput).

Can I use a directional antenna on just one end of this link?

What are my best options for this? I'd like to avoid using a point to point bridge due to cost.

Thanks,
Greg

You can try. Yes, You can make due with a directional antenna on only one side of the link.

I've successfully used a "can-tenna" to allow a friend to connect a laptop to his house's WiFi on from his barn, over 500ft away. I could induce packet loss simply by shaking the rod the can's mounted on, (you wouldn't want to game with the connection), but it worked... I've certainly read of others who've used standard WiFi over longer distances with other home built gear.

It's going to depend on what's between you and the source.. To make my cantenna / barn apparatus work, I had to make sure the house's router was sitting in the window with a clear line of site to the barn.

If you're OK with DIY, Google "cantenna" and you'll find home built gear, instructions, youtube videos, etc to get you started.. Anything you'd buy off the shelf would probably be more expensive than it sounds like you're willing to spend.

5db gain antenna and a open Fresnel zone and you should be good to go. Now if you have obstacles in the way...then getting to 600' can get more interesting.

The AP still has to be strong enough to talk back. It's like if you have a megaphone but the person at the other end does not. They'll hear you but you wont hear them. I think a decent AP should be able to though. I know unify's are around 500feet.
