More BF4 news today. If you have been wondering where Mantle is for BF4, which was originally scheduled for a December release, this latest update from AMD informs us it has now been rescheduled to January.

After much consideration, the decision was made to delay the Mantle patch for Battlefield 4. AMD continues to support DICE on the public introduction of Mantle, and we are tremendously excited about the coming release for Battlefield 4! We are now targeting a January release and will have more information to share in the New Year.

they could have let everyone know a bit sooner...waiting till December 30th sounds like they were trying to milk as many BF4 and AMD 200 series sales as possible...hopefully they get it out before January 31st

Don't get me wrong, I own a bunch of AMD stuff, including two 290X GPUs, but it seems to me like AMD is treating BF4 and this Mantle thing just like their drivers.......a day late and a dollar short.

It gets old after a while.

Yup, exactly why I went with the green team this generation and so far happy that I did. Tried to support red for years but they just kept letting me down on the drivers. Hopefully they kick it into high gear very soon since they're in every console now but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Well, sucks they missed the deadline, but as far as people playing the blame game- I don't see where this is AMD's. It sucks for them because they want their flagship game up and running to show off the new tech. It sounds like DICE's bug-hunt is what's plugging things up.

I think its more a an EA/DICE issue with them trying to fix existing bf4 issues before throwing in Mantle on top of everything. Of course AMD will catch the majority of the flack for its delay. Oh well. Buy when its out I always say. (But hardly ever do!)

eh shit happens. delays happen. looking forward to Mantle in January and maybe some teaser videos or performance numbers in the interim.

I'm not so sure this Mantle delay is all on AMD's shoulders. From what I've read, Dice has pulled away team members to help squish bugs in BF4, and they have been concentrating on the incompleteness of BF4, rather than Mantle. I think we all know BF4 wasn't ready to be published, but was anyway, so work has gone into fixing that first, and taken all their time away from Mantle. I think this delay is more on Dice's/EA's shoulders.

Bug fixing is good, releasing a proper product would be better. At least EA is fixing their product, a good change.

AMD is kinda stuck until EA can get out of their mess, BUT I doubt this will prevent them from showing off at CES!

;)

In the end it does not matter 2 or 4 weeks late as long as the results are there
If they can optimize their engine (frostbite 3) for Mantle and the result is far beyond simple FPS boost I would be happy.

Don't forget that Mantle can have a lot more gpu code before it bogs down.

Its sad that the game they chose to debut Mantle on was so critically acclaimed yet so poorly presented.
I'm pretty patient with releases, but this needed to go well after the hype.
They could have been up front with what is happening instead of waiting until the last moment.
Looking forward to seeing what they can achieve,

This is most likely due to BF4 being included with the higher end Kaveri APU's next month.

Hope kaveri will be widely available once they announce the product for retail.

You do realize that this is problem that's between two companies? As much as people want to blame AMD for this, you do have EA developers to deal with as well. Good chance they're making sure the game is bug free before releasing the patch. Just in case people blame AMD's Mantle for any bugs experienced in the game.

So.....let me get this straight.....AMD had no idea. Ok.

I'm sure they had an idea, but they chose to use this game to debut Mantle, and it's EA's fault for pushing the game out before it was ready. Perhaps it would have benefited AMD to have a backup game ready to go in case BF4 didn't work out quickly ;) Or even develop Mantle on a multi-game release, that would have been great. But they are stuck with BF4's immaturity.

DICE is notorious for leaving bugs unaddressed.
I learned this intimately with bad company 2, DICE could not have ignored the community more, and never actually finished the game. Unfortunately, as non-gamers, I can see their lack of vision. (They don't know what's going on)
Slap EA's business model on top and we arrive here it seems. More of the same from both companies after their promises fall through, but their grip on our money seems tighter than ever.
Well done.

Can't fault AMD for wanting to delay. Tough position to be in when the game is as glitchy as it is, existing crashes would probably get blamed on mantle. Poor timing during holidays as I'm sure plenty of employees are on vacation.

I was playing this earlier after giving up a week or two after launch (I tried about 2 weeks ago but the SLI flickering was just the worst). Everything was looking ok until it started raining on the map I was playing... then the server exploded.

Understandable, It's better to have BF4 fixed before debuting mantle.

Yea, was about to say e same thing...I went to log on today and noticed the client side connection issues were being worked on. I don't think a week has gone by since release that a fix was not in progress.

According to my BF4 stats, I have 13h 22m played in multiplayer. I can think of 2 maybe 3 crashes the entire time I've played, and no other issues. 1 of which was the server going down for sure. This has been since the end of November when I got the game with my XFX 290.

Am I just lucky? Is everyone else crashing left and right? About 7 hours were with Windows 7 SP1, 2500K @ 4.6ghz, 8GB Ram. Rest of the time has been with the rig in my sig and Windows 8.1. Using a 290X (unlocked) the entire time as well.
I've had more crashes with Skyrim and I've not put as much time in it as I have BF4. Hell, Bioshock Infinite crashed once in the hour I've played it so far.

That sucks. Oh well, I'm done with BF4 for awhile. 100hrs into multiplayer with countless crashes. Not to mention no eyefinity portrait support. Watch they'll delay it again at the end of January.

I never had any problems with BC2 and logged roughly 500 hours on multiplayer. What issues did you have with that game? For a bunch of non-gamers (not sure where you are getting that from) they sure do make fantastic games.

Crashes were frequent for me before the first PC patch and since then I've had only a handful.

Are you using the 64bit client? I had shit tons of issues with the 32bit client and no crashing since early nov using 64bit.

I've been using 64bit from the start and it would just crash left and right up until mid November. After the whole megalodon crazed hunt and delayed DLCs. I've lost interest in the game. :(

Both AMD and EA need an excellent initial impression of Mantle.

EA/DICE, per the presentations at GPU13 and APU13, are making Mantle a focus of their future plans, so they have a LOT riding on a very favorable first impression of Mantle in action in a released game.

For AMD, Mantle represents a huge boost for their Unified Gaming Strategy, so they are similarly vested in an excellent first impression of Mantle.

Middle of January, co-incident with Kaveri retail availability is my guess.

I'm in same situation as you - no problems on my end other than maybe 2 game crashed and a couple server crashed right when the game came out.

Whatever, I'm still not buying BF4 until they have this worked out. The whole game is just BF3 with better graphics. I just want them betterer as they get.

this just makes my brain hurt. its a completely different experience then bf3:rolleyes:. Ive logged about 120 hours, with complaints of my own; but nothing too serious.

When it works it is better than bf3.
Better balance (usually) and more interesting weapons/gadgets. The maps are also better aside from railway. Which is shit. That said, hit detection got worse and I'm not just meaning the hip to ADS mechanics. Hopefully it is fixed.

Yeah it was obvious it's not going to happen ...

So I kind of started to get more time into holiday stuff, but when I was at the PC I decided to up the spirits with a relaxing and funny video:

Enjoy!

(I've researched all things mantle extensively and participated in various tech debates around the web in this and last month)

Actually DICE has a completely separate team for frostbite that has nothing to do with the devs that are working on BF4's problems, I seriously doubt mantle implementation suffered due to the shifting of resources within DICE.

That's a good point. And as can be seen, it's AMD who's making the announcement, not DICE. Could indicate they've had problems with some aspects of Mantle, or that they want to wait until BF4's less buggy. The latter sounds unlikely, since it'd be in AMD's interest to get it out as soon as possible just to show the performance boost, assuming it works as intended.

Well the obvious problems with BF4 is that it is not stable for everybody. The bigger problem is the netcode.

So how many aspects of crashing do involve frostbite 3 engine?
If DICE really wants a stable game. I hope they can make a fist towards EA and next battlefield will not only get more testing done but also a decent time to launch instead of what happened now.

Until Dice fixes their game, everything else is a secondary objective, no surprise here. They're already going through a couple class action lawsuits because of BF4's bad condition.

that would require confidence that people are able to discern the difference between BF4 being bugging and Mantle being buggy. it's easy to imagine all the threads popping up across the web titled "wow Mantle is a buggy piece of shit". if Mantle is ready and BF4 is truly the hold-up, then it's a smart move by AMD. a delay has less impact than public outcry about how buggy Mantle is.
