Does anyone else here hate multiplayer games/modes? I used to play some, but wow have I grown out of it. I just feel like there are too many basement living virgins who play 24/7 to have fun anymore. Also most games have this weird 'e-sport' vibe going on with them, like it's the biggest deal in the world if they win at a video game or not. Oh and hearing people over a mic, it just makes me cringe.

I've moved strictly to single player games and couldn't be happier. I don't have to worry about dealing with that trash, and I can enjoy games at my own pace. I'm also 32 years old though and don't have this inherent need to 'pwn noobs' to get off in life. I also don't game to feel stressed out, which is what multiplayer does to me.

What say you? What makes you multiplayers stick with it? I know what the #1 answer is going to be...because humans make different decisions than AI does. My answer is, so what?

Competitive multiplayer sucks for the reasons you stated. Cooperative multiplayer with friends is a lot of fun. Unfortunately games with a co-op mode are few and far between these days.

I stopped playing mp games when my 3rd kid was born. Hard to help the wife when I can't pause my game...

Yeah I agree, I should've differentiated between the two.

I like co-op games.

chalmer9, have you tried Killing Floor or PayDay?

I don't really find competitive multiplayer fun that often, for the reasons you said. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows back when games like Tribes, UT '99, and Q3A were popular but the general maturity level of gamers was as whole hell of a lot higher. The community did occasionally suck, but it was more about having fun and screwing around. Gamers take this shit way too seriously these days, it kills any chance of actually having fun. That said, I'd take competitive MP over MMOs, those are some truly fucked communities.

I think many multiplayer gamer today take it too seriously. I understand if you're playing in a clan practicing or something, but in public servers it's basically a bunch of strangers put together so there's no point losing your cool if the team isn't doing well. When I was playing BF3, often I came across these raging maniacs. Least they could do is try to coordinate the team if they really want to do well, but all I saw was them bitching when we lose.

I like playing old multiplayer games like Halo PC and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. For some reason, the gaming community in those two are just like me - we played it as teens, and are happy that there are a dedicated group of people online still playing. We all are the same age, most have kids now, etc.; so our objectives tend to be the same - to play and have fun. Do I pwn as much as I used to? I don't think so. But it doesn't matter. No one talks shit, everyone gives props where it's due for good kills, and generally - it's a good time.

Oh and I should have mentioned. Yes - we chat it up as we play sometimes. Otherwise I'd never know that sort of information. No one's gone so far as to post a friend request on Facebook or anything like that, but I don't ever expect that to happen. I think we just get online to all get a break from life some times. OP - you should look into older games. MOH:AA is like $10 for the game + all expansions.

You care too much at your advanced gaming age. :) You probably have had a few different car payments by now. You worry about your credit rating. But when you want to unwind, you just want to have fun.

This is what is wrong with E-Sports. I watch a streamer that has probably 3,000 subscribers. Each sub pays him $5 per month. He gets tons more cash from donations to his PayPal account. Many multitudes more than his sub money amounts to. He also gets commercial spot revenue from the amount of people in his stream. He plays WoW at a high level doing PVE. Technically that isn't an E-Sport, but the PVE guys race to beat bosses to get world firsts. This gets them sponsorships from companies like Razer.

The last stream I watched, this guy had to pause his discussion to allow his maid clean the room he was in. He doesn't have a regular job, but his GF does. He says that she works because she feels the need to; not because she has to. He has his food delivered to his home and I don't mean pizza. I mean real food! He has a personal trainer. He is also sponsored by a weight loss company. This guy kills bosses in a video game.

Now he's almost exactly your age. So he's not acting like an ass most of the time. But it's to give you an idea why people want to be as good as the E-Sports guys. When money is being tossed around like that you want to join them. I watched another guy get a $100,000 donation from a subscriber "for being good and showing him how to play World of Warcraft." Also he liked his toxic personality.

That's why for the most part I buy games for their single-player value. MP is more along the lines of "Bonus Content" if you will. As for anybody with a mic? Keyboards are just as bad. The racism and bigotry that comes from these people who hide behind their screens makes my blood boil sometimes. I'm 38 I just like to play to pass the time when I have some free, but sometimes it seems there's little point in multiplayer.

I'm part of a community that hosts many TF2 servers. They're pub servers, sure, but we have always fostered a "play to win" mentality and encouraged team play above all else. We don't expect people to be pros (or even be remotely skilled), but we expect people to help the team and push for whatever the objective is. Personally, I cringe when players don't have mics to play a team game where communication absolutely makes a difference.

As jbltecnicspro mentioned, sometimes enjoying multiplayer involves finding the right group for you. Not every server for every game is the same.

As for bots vs humans...I enjoy the competition of going head to head with another team of players; it's the same concept as playing any organized sport. Unless there's some sort of truly epic storytelling going on I just don't see the appeal of single player FPS games; bots in a multiplayer FPS are an even bigger waste of time.

I don't understand the "US VS THEM" mentality of a lot of single player and multiplayer gamers. Both are targeted toward demographics that appreciates them. Seriously, sometimes it feels like people cannot handle knowing that one or the other exists without feeling their preferred choice of game is somehow fundamentally threatened by the other.

Sooooo, often you see in new game announcement threads "What? No SP? No buy" or "What? No MP No buy".. No shit, games are targeted toward a specific audience, ya don't have to buy each and every game if it doesn't fit your preference, nor does each and every game have to be tailored to your specific desire.

I'm predominantly a SP gamer for many of the reasons already mentioned in this thread. When I do play MP, it is typically with friends. There are a few exceptions such as Chivalry which was fucking hilarious to play. Was being the operative word. I had a blast playing for the few hours invested but I quickly moved on once the gameplay mechanics were explored to their entirety.

All my favorite gaming moments have been in SP games.

OP probably gets owned over and over. I know losing repeatedly isn't that much fun. Ive been there many times myself. Get better or uninstall/cry on forum. Ive certainly done both.

I play mp because it is just fun. But bf4 with bots could be funnier.
The problem with mp games is cheating. Too many cheaters.

I hate FPS multiplayer games, primarily because I am not that good at them and I get my ass handed to me time and again. Also because I don't have the time to invest in playing in a clan and those who play with a group will always have the advantage over those who play solo.

However, I love World of Tanks, which I play solo all the time and still end up winning more often than losing. In WoT it's all about tactics, situational awareness, and being able to quickly analyze the situation and decisively take action. To me WoT is more of a brain game than BF3 or CoD where it's all about reflex muscle twitches.

The only good multiplayer games for me are those where the participants must work together in some way or another. Certain MMOs at certain points have this cooperative enjoyment dialed in nicely, but they tend to go right along with some amount of stress, which a lot of people enjoy in modest quantities.

Another genre that is cooperative and multiplayer is the racing simulator. You can't succeed if you make constant contact with other cars so you have to race fair. iracing.com bans people that run around acting like douches wrecking people and saying nasty things, and it aint exactly cheap to get into, so you end up with a very professional group of participants. That said, the only "game" that's ever made me feel like I was going to have a heart-attack was iracing. Being at the top of your game and watching someone a little bit better than you stalk you down lap after lap provides a feeling of stress and a level of focus no other experience has brought me.

hackers and cheaters have ruined MP gaming...if everyone played on a level playing field then it would be a lot more fun...it's still fun depending on the game- Dark Souls pvp is great...it's just the mainstream games that have been cheapened- BF, CoD

MWO is a game similar to wot you know.

I have to say I like MP, but only with friends, beer and a private server. Playing any Unreal Tournament game with friends online or LAN is a blast. Even running through Half-Life 2 in co-op is great fun even though I've beaten the shit out of that game. Co-op makes all the difference for me.

edit: I'd like to add that Synergy mod for HL2 is infuriatingly buggy and crashes all the damn time, but still worth it for me :p

OP if you are one of the many terribles I see in BF4 maybe you should stop playing MP. That game is riddled with full retards.

I don't play multiplayer games, so it's kind of hard to get owned over and over at something you're not participating in.

I bet you don't play badminton, but I'm going to now say that I bet you get owned over and over and over regularly at badminton, don't you? See? I can make shit up too that isn't actually happening.

I don't play multiplayer games. I play single player games. Too many tryhards in multiplayer gaming for me.

If I could. I would too only play with friends. I have no time to loose with the cheaters. I don't even talk to that kind of people. Go rape teen.

You'd enjoy playing with me, I bet. I try to entertain the people I play with (be a good host!), I enunciate when I speak and I almost always laugh when I die.

Not everyone online is a nut bar.

It's not that the unknown people does not have a good attitude, it's they cheat. And I don't have time to loose to debate with the demons they are.

I'm like the OP...can't get into MP games anymore. Played TF2 for a while, but then they added all that extra crap and it wasn't fun anymore. I enjoyed CoD-World at War for a while...found a couple tactical servers that seemed to keep a lot of the 12 year olds out. But really I haven't MP gaming since the days of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. That game is probably, to this day, the most fun I've had since I started playing video games.

I think part of my problem with MP gaming is that I'm antisocial. The other part is that I've built up a crazy backlog of games and haven't bought a game on release since Skyrim. With MP games, if you don't buy them on day 1, you may miss out on playing them with anyone at all since the next one in the series is only a few months away.

That's not being a good sport. I'm not good either but I'm not going to make excuses and generalize gamers. How would you like it if all the top players commented that single player gamers are whiny pansies?

heh no.

single player games tend to be a bore fest unless its a well done rpg

MP is a lot of fun because playing with real people is more exciting than A.I.

I do agree with you tho I always mute everyone at the start of every game because 100% of people online are annoying on their microphone. Also, I like playing single-player games when I know I may have a need to pause or want a more "relaxing" experience.

I did about 20 pvp duels, 6 or so instances of jolly cooperation and a couple anti-gank measures in Dark Souls this weekend. I really dig the multiplayer.

Trashtalking and teabagging is part of the fun. Skill isn't required to be good, a good portion of it is knowing the maps.

I am the exact opposite. I almost exclusively play competitive multiplayer games, with a few random coop games thrown in. I play for the challenge, and the competition. I play these because skill matters in these games, I either objectively play better or worse, and can always find room for improvement. I might be playing on the same map for the 100th time, but no two games ever play out the same.

I rarely find anything entertaining, or challenging about single player games. AI's either cheat or are incompetent. I have yet to find a middle ground. I also have yet to find the motivation do try and find one. I feel a real sense of accomplishment out smarting a human, I feel cheated "outsmarting" an AI.

I think sandbox games are dull and boring as fuck. "Oh gee, I blew up 100 guys in an obvious explosive barrel trap for the 102nd time, I wonder if I can do it again with my knife?" Yeah pass. On rails single player CoD style campaign? Snoooooooze. It's either a grabass shitty game of sneak and peak, or you're facing endless waves of moronic bad guys on a timer.

Elder scrolls style RPG's? Boring Town, population me. Zippidy do, I have shiny emerald sword of who gives a shit to take on the legendary dragon - who can be trapped by walking into a mountain pass and plunked down with arrows.

Or how about 3D virtual slot machines that are MMO's? Actually, I won't even bother. I hate playing slots at the casino, and a 3D casino with a friendly chat room and virtual money is not really worth my time.

Competitive Multiplayer never plays the same, there's skill involved so I always have room to improve, human's are far more entertaining to play against, and working together on a team and winning is just a very satisfying feeling.

I get what you're saying, I just don't have that drive to compete and worry about 'skill', because I just don't care. I don't get off on defeating other human beings. I just like sitting down, relaxing and playing a game, not worrying about all that stuff you mentioned. Too stressful.
