STEAM 3Dmark 2013 - $2.49

Picked it up last night when I was at the bar. Thank you, Steam mobile.

Yes, which, imo only makes it better. Just go make sure you select "all software" on your library or you won't find it.

why does it make it better?...you don't want other programs running in the background when benchmarking

Can anyone confirm if there is performance penalty for running Steam in background, and approximately what it is?

unless you are using a 15 year old Celeron chip and 64mb of ram there is no measurable penalty.

I highly doubt I'd see a difference visibly, but curious if Steam running affects the end score.

I'm not worried about the 12MB of ram it takes up while sitting idle, it's not consuming CPU time, and even if it were, it'd be so miniscule it wouldn't matter.

Running it through steam is nice for putting it on multiple machines and dealing with the cd key (atleast I'd imagine). Much easier to keep track of things, in my opinion, through the steam library. That and I get 7MB/s download speeds from them.

Good catch, in for one.

All 3d mark keys are redeemable on Steam afaik. I used my old ass Vantage key that I got with my GTX 280 and it registered.

It does have a small impact on the end score, actually, from tests people have done. However there's a way to run it standalone I think even if you buy through Steam, you'd have to google to make sure though as I could be wrong.

Pylor, how does having further DRM beyond a simple activation key "only make it better"??

Because then they can't lose their games! Don't have to worry about scratched disks or where they are.

Full version for free? Oh basic.... Kinda like 3dmark basic version
well the free versions of those are all you need. the free version of 3Dmark tortures you by making you run all the benchmarks just to get the firestrike score.

No brainer at two fiddy. But of course, that meant seeing what else was on sale today, and adding three more god damned games to my backlog. :)

it's easier to keep track of all your 3DMark scores through the Futuremark website...not only for the latest 3DMark 12 scores but ALL of your 3DMark/MadOnion benchmark scores

Yup I grabbed it too, so far it's my only purchase of the Sale. Always nice to have an extra benchmark program for testing things.

I did a quick couple of runs of a custom fire strike run and got scores of 7743 and 7747 with steam on/minimized and 7744 and 7746 with steam turned off, didn't make much of a difference for me, but ymmv. My machine isn't yours or anyone else's and it might react differently on different machines.

People who are concerned about this should also note that you can turn steam off after you launch 3dmark. Not even sure if you need steam on to launch it, but I haven't tried.

As for the DRM, I prefer the steam method. I log into steam, double click download, it downloads in 30 seconds and installs, then I click run and boom, no DRM to worry about. No CD key to look up, type in, oh no that was supposed to be a capital K? I just spent 30 seconds relooking through the whole key to find that, etc. Much easier imo, but I'm a steam fan and some people just don't like it. I can see having my keys backed up to a network storage or something, but still, why bother when I can login through a single login system?

I grabbed it. I had some money from selling cs:go skins! I use it anyway now "unsupported" so I figure for $2 supporting the devs shouldn't break the bank.

Thanks OP, just in time for me to test my new gpu, and for that price there's no reason not to step up from the free version.

I don't benchmark much...pretty much only when I get a new GPU...so the free one suits my needs fine...$2.49 is a great deal for those that want the full version though

Clearly you have money to waste if you spend $12 on an e-peen tool.

I picked it up just so I don't have to waste time going through all of the 3DMark benchmarks just to get to the Firestrike one when I'm testing OC's....that was always ridiculous.
