290/290x availability thread

Just picked up the Gigabyte 290x with the Windforce cooler. Hope its not a dead card.

Naw. Tax deductable. But yeah $700. Figure if I got the reference card for $550 and bought an aftermarket cooler for $80 to $100 I'm in the hole $50 bucks give or take. Not the end of the world.

Ya could be waiting awhile if the crypto currency thing stays steady.

Just sold a year + old 7970 Vapor X for $370 bucks on ebay.

I'll jump on non-reference when they come. Must be alot of bitcoiners buying these dang..

MSI Gaming 290 and 290x are "released".

First person to find a vendor carrying them wins a cookie.

It does appear to be a new design as it does not match the MSI 280x, 780, 780 Lightning, or 780 Ti based on pictures.
So far I can't find any other recent MSI Gaming card with the same heatsink layout.

Any PCB experts comment on the cooling quality of the heatsink in THIS picture?

It looks like even less coverage than their old cards. The 280x had throttling problems from temps, hope the 290/290x doesn't suffer too.

1007MHz Core(OC mode)
977MHz Core(Gaming mode)
947MHz Core(Silent mode)

Their "Silent Mode" is actually stock clocks, a bit different than what we've seen so far.

Seems Amazon is one of the few places where they are not charge well above MSRP for some of the 290s :/

They have frequently been popping up for $420-$440...
So yes, anything close to $500 is not interesting.

yes, 420-440 I'll buy. 450 I'd THINK about but $500 is a no brainer NO for a non X

Mining isn't as crazy right now so the card prices should start dropping again but the problem is there's all these people that want the cards for stupid GAMING waiting to gobble them up too.

Just remember if you are purchasing from Amazon, chances are you are paying tax vs a place like Newegg. Still pissed about Amazon charging tax... :(

Why are you pissed at Amazon? If they have a presence in your state, which they do, they have to by law. Go to your city hall and complain.

Why? You're supposed to be paying tax if you buy from Newegg too, right? You Americans have it too easy :/

Most states have laws saying you only pay tax for goods bought online if the store has a physical presence in that state. When you live in a boring Midwest state like I do, you rarely pay online tax. One of the few bonuses of living here.

Because their fullfillment center is not even built yet in Wisconsin. Why should I have to pay tax when ground hasn't even been broken (to my knowledge)?

You should be claiming all those internet "tax free" purchases on your tax returns. so technically you're trying to commit tax fraud.

Ah yes, I'm sure everyone that purchases anything on the internet is claiming it. You go girl.

Have you been watching the news lately? Amazon pays tax by default if it has sellers in whichever state. Doesn't matter if you buy it from Amazon or a seller, if anyone has a presence in your state then you pay tax by default.

Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that it sucks to go from not paying tax at Amazon to now paying tax. It's a fact of life but it doesn't change my sentiment toward it. No one in their right mind should be excited about going from tax-free to taxable, unless you are the government.

This is NOT true. It depends on the laws of your state. Amazon.com has MULTIPLE locations and warehouses in my state (NC) - including Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Greensboro, while amazon does not charge tax in NC.

This is true for many states in the US. It depends on which state you live in. Currently, state taxation laws are very ambiguous in this respect - if your state wants to charge tax, they will. CA for example, will charge you tax. Even though amazon isn't doing anything awfully different in CA than they are in NC. To my knowledge, amazon.com does not have actual storefronts. I could be wrong here, but that is my impression. But they do have an extensive network of warehouses and logistics centers pretty much everywhere in every state.

Basically, it boils down to how greedy your state legislators are. Again, state laws are ambiguous in this respect. But that won't stop legislators from forcing amazon.com to tax residents if they want. If your state legislators want a piece of the pie, they will get it. Fortunately, most states are not like this. Not yet.
