bought a similar desk but missus and probably soon to me ex took it appart

Hey. I kinda need a new desk and I really thought it is going to be Galant, but my initial impression was dissapointing when I was passing by Ikea last weekend...

It swayed easily, bent under mediocre pressure. And this was a 160x80cm desk on T legs. I'm more interested in 200x80cm which I imagine would be even worse.

Was it badly screwed or something?

The only alternative for the Galant would be custom desk made by a local carpenter.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But if you get the Galant desk, you have to get the Frame and the Legs separately right? So they are a different Article number? I don't have one near me, so before I drive 2 hours and before I call to ask I thought I would ask here.

FIND SOMEONE TO HELP YOU IN STORE! Thank god I did. I sat around for 10 minutes making sure I had everything figured out, and I mostly did, but just having someone else help you is great. The employee printed me out a summary sheet of just the stuff I needed, costs, where it is, etc.

Which Ikea desk were you looking at? I have the Galant 63"x31 1/2". It does wobble a little bit, but only if I accidentally bump it. While typing or playing a game, it doesn't move (I have the T-legs).

UGH. I would hate for the Galant to be wobbly.

Well I finally got my galant. It would be great if they damn thing didn't wobble my monitors when typing regularly or moving my mouse at a moderate speed (slower than what you would need for an FPS).

it's pretty damn disorienting.

The desk should not wobble. Is it on carpet? If so, maybe it'll wobble a bit. Find whatever screws are loose and tighten them.

Ask and ye shall receive.

Not completely happy with how the cable management turned out in the back, but got too tired to fix it tonight. Getting there though.

How tall is the wire PC rack? 54 Inches? Thinking about that for my setup, but need to hold 2 PC's, 21 inches high and the other 17 inches, and using your image as a basis it looks like they would fit.

Thanks

My galant wobbles my monitors too, but i built it pretty shoddily and it's sitting on carpet.
If it really bothers you, i'd take the time to rebuild it.

I like the pictures in this thread. It gives me some good ideas on wire management for my own desk and computer setup.

guys i have a problem with my galant.
i have a L shaped one, with A shaped legs, and the smaller side of the L wont hug my wall cuz of the A legs. Anyone experienced or have a workaround for this issue? Do i have to replace the leg that prevents the desk from hugging the wall with a T leg?

I think you'll have to move the leg so the foot of it doesn't hit the wall. A picture would help show the issue your having better.

Is the Galant better with the T-legs, or the A legs? Will it hold up to my repeated beatings when I get pissed off at BF4?

Here is my kitchen table office while the real home office gets its Ikea upgrade. The little TV is running Pandora via a Minix Neo X5 mini android PC.

Here's my setup with the Fredde desk. It's good but not great quality. Standard melamine laminated particleboard and a steel frame. The two "panels" on the sides are stamped sheet steel. For a size reference - the screen is a QNIX 27" WQHD screen. That steel cross-bar near your feet is almost a C-channel and wires can be hidden in it and routed across.

I am considering buying either the IKEA Galant Workstation or the Galant Desk Combination Right for my new home office computer setup. I'm buying three 30-inch computer monitors (NEC PA302W-BK) that will carry a 112.5 pound weight total (37.5 pounds per monitor). My computer weighs approximately 11 pounds so the total without anything else on the desk (keyboard, mouse, speakers, additional external computer drives, etc.) comes in at about 124 pounds. The Galant seems to have some sturdy metal rails underneath the desk but I was wondering if the IKEA Galant can handle this load.

Here's a link to the instructions. It's lists the weight the desk can hold.

HDriscoll, thanks very much for the link. I looked over that PDF from the IKEA site earlier today and it does list 50kg as the max (110.2 pounds) for the Workstation. The reason why I ask is that I've heard from one other person on another forum using a Galant that the desk should support my proposed setup.

This forum seems to have the most detailed info from users using the Galant that I was hoping that someone who has a similar setup or experience with the Galant would comment on the viability of my proposed three monitor setup.

I have a Galant corner desk and it is holding my monitor setup:

The lower row is 3x30" monitors, the upper row 4x22" LED monitors, plus about 20kg of monitor stands behind them.

My Galant doesn't even bend under this load so you should be safe.

rtangwai, thanks very much for your post! Very cool to see your setup..very nice, BTW. Thanks also for helping to clear this matter up a great deal for me. My eyes are weary looking for just the right desk tonight. I have just one follow up question for you if you don't mind. Seeing that the load on your corner desk is more than just fine, do you think that the longer Galant Workstation model (about 94-inches in length) will hold up the same way with the three monitors on the top middle back of the desk -- where the desk could possibly be most vulnerable to weight in the middle (sagging over time at the mid-point of the longer desk)? I appreciate your patience with this follow-up question as this would be my first foray with IKEA as a desk to hold up a major investment and I just wanted to make sure about all of this seeing you have had ample experience with the brand.

rtangwai, then again, your corner desk looks pretty darn sweet, too! If it can hold up that much weight, and it does of course, then it makes it quite the tempting choice for myself, as well! Unfortunately, I tried searching for your desk on the IKEA website and couldn't find an exact match from just looking at the picture of your multi-monitor setup that you just posted. If it isn't a bother, do you have the link to your specific desk on the IKEA website you could share? Thanks so much for your help.

This is exactly what I have except in mirror form:

http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S99807372/#/S19807371

If you look you'll see there is a leg in the back to brace the corner. The railing system for the Galant is quite strong:

The rails underneath the tabletops are connected with tube steel with the joining pieces being quite long and use large bolts for maximum strength. There is no sag, which doesn't surprise me as IKEA rates the desk with a maximum load of 80kg. Unless you do something crazy like put a UPS battery on the desk it should be more than strong enough.

I have the longer desk myself as the monitors are wider than the standard corner desk (even with me curving them inwards) so unless you plan on putting 3x30" CRT monitors you'll be fine.

Robert, I sincerely appreciate the time you took in answering my questions. You've been a big help; thanks. I'm probably going to be heading to IKEA this week to check out the desks. The closest one I could find that's comparable to yours in overall look and size is http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S79903869/. The monitors I'm looking to get are three NEC PA302W-BKs, not CRTs, so I'm definitely good in that area.

The desk you listed is the short one. The picture I posted of the upside-down piece is the extension you want to put on the desk. The short desk is *TOO short for 3x30" monitors unless you don't mind them hanging over both sides of the desk. If you are using a single stand to mount all 3 monitors you won't have to worry about that.

rtangwai, I looked all over the IKEA website (where the Galant desks are listed) and I couldn't find the extension piece you referenced.

I finally decided to find out why my Galant wobbled and I have narrowed it down to the legs, their metal tabs (that only go in one way),
the position of the height adjustment screws, and a skewed leg on one of the extensions, or simply it being on carpet.

Sorry for the mess, but I had to rip a bunch of crap out after it finally started looking good

What I suspect is wrong:
1)The position of the black height adjustment holes are facing the wrong way. Which way is "right" is anyone's guess because according to the website picture my desk is correct, yet
the manual lists leg #2 as being the other way around. Is this because they use what looks like the corner desk left in their diagram?

2) I noticed when I built my desk the extension side foot (leg 3) didn't sit straight with the frame much like post #4 here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=17931889&postcount=4

I pivoted the #3 foot around a bit (it has some play) and it looks a bit straighter, but it doesn't look 100% right.

3) they are not EXACTLY on the leg height lines because I did it myself and the thing is bloody heavy.

My desk looks EXACTLY the same on as on the Ikea website so either the manual is wrong or the people that built theirs screwed up too.

Does Ikea make different sets of T-legs? I bought these 3 individually added and not in the "combo" form online, as far as I can tell there is no way to flip the legs due to the stupid metal pins that really only let them sit one way.

Either way, I am not looking forward to flipping this thing back over.
