Curious to know how many of you are influenced by the potential to use your gpu to make some money to buy amd over nvidia for your gaming needs as well.

Not talking about using nvidia for gaming and amd for mining, I am talking about specifically deciding against nvidia because amd cards have this additional competency.

Where is "it swayed me towards Nvidia over AMD"?

I was planning to get an AMD gpu because AMD usually has the better performance/price ratio, but the mining made AMD cards both scarce and overpriced (for the purpose of gaming), pushing me towards Nvidia cards.

And I really should break that sentence into pieces.

^
Same here, AMD parts usually have a better performance/price ratio, as well as supporting the underdog are my reasons. GPU reliability (8xxx/9xxx failures) from Nvidia is another important decision. Mining is icing on the cake, and now is another point in the decision making process. Physx, gsync, 3d gaming don't feel as worthwhile.

Where's the option, "No, I bought an amd gpu because it was more cost effective even without mining" ?

I've been using Radeons for gaming over the past 5 years simply because they've given equivalent performance for less money.

Throw mining into the mix, and they make the gpu cost effectively zero, and profit.

Well, the cards pay for themselves. Hard to pass up on free cards, and then some! Even before mining and self-paying cards, AMD price/performance couldn't be beat.

ZERO impact at all. I have a bunch of AMD gpu's mining away in dedicated rigs, and I game/work on an nVidia GPU. Win-win all around there ;).

That's the second option.

I thought about it, realized that the demand for LTC/altcoins is even more artificial than BTC, and decided with the sweep of cards people bought, the increased difficulty and decreased price would not make it profitable.

I went with nVidia for GSync

I should have added an option to see how many people went with nvidia because of the increased amd prices from the altcoin craze.

Oh well.

some people seemed to have been swayed to amd due to the altcoin capability, but others were pushed towards nvidia due to prices or whatever else.

It affected my choice of gaming GPU in that I sold my 7950 and bought a 780ti. I would have considered a 290x AIB, but I did not want to fight price mark-up.

Not really. While I consider mining a bonus, it isn't the main impetus for purchasing a card. I intend to get the 290X because of its better price/performance ratio than Nvidia (when prices normalize), the fact that with aftermarket cooling on the reference design or upcoming non-reference designs the 290x will only run better than we've seen so far further expanding the price/perf ratio, and finally because I want to support AMD for their increasing openness, new tech like Mantle, and Linux friendliness.

Mining I consider a bonus, but I've bought AMD for the last 3 main rig purchases because the cards were simply the best price/performance and they haven't let me down.

AMD is price/performance. Nvidia is stability/drivers. I normally don't mind mind taking a risk but I find the older I get the more I want shit to "work".

Litecoin mining could end up paying off though and well so maybe for the moment if you don't mind running your comp setup with an AMD card for 24/7 you could stand to make some serious cash.

That's the second option.

That second option isn't really the same implication. "Doesn't affect at all" means you just go with whoever you had decided from the getgo and didn't factor in any of the effects of mining.

Outright going with Nvidia due to mining's inflation of graphics card prices... that's a different situation from not caring at all. Heck currently I went and suggested to a friend that he go and sell his 280X right now because doing so would get him well within striking distance of a 780 instead.

Well I use an EVGA 780 GTX Ti for gaming and 2 x 290s for mining.

So these are two separate equations for me. I just can't give up on TXAA, video recording and PhysX.

I almost want to get an nVidia card next time so that I am not tempted to mine with it

Well, I was happy with a 560ti, upgraded to a 290x to mine. The way I see it, I'm getting a free video card upgrade.

My thoughts on things exactly.

In the past I've been predominantly team green, but have had a few ATI/AMD cards as well. Some because the price/performance was great, some for mining capability.

I bought a couple of 290s because of litecoin mining. When they stop being profitable I plan on keeping 2, maybe 3 for the hell of it, so yeah I guess it did.

Yes. Mining impacts the cost of the hardware, eventually paying itself off including the cost of electricity.

A GTX 770 is sweet, but a free 280x is even sweeter.

I was responding to: Where's the option, "No, I bought an amd gpu because it was more cost effective even without mining" ?

I wasn't talking about choosing nvidia due to inflation

I had been planning on getting a 290(x), but the crazy prices/scarcity due to mining, and me being tired of waiting as is lead me to get a 780. Yes, my choice will probably leave me with less performance (whether or not I would see the difference outside of benchmarks...questionable,) but on the other hand I am a bit of a quiet pc freak so dealing with inherently less power consumption and heat will be a bonus.

Im so deep into bitcoins, i seem to be able to make far more value, trading or buying, rather than buying a card and then mining.

Example, seems like buying $500 of litecoins and trading would net me more profit in 3 months, than buying a card and mining for 6 months.

ive seen a $500 investment turn into $1000 in the past week. Either litecoin or peercoin.

Indeed. I find mining still useful as "filler" for trading though.

nope. i've got a gtx 780 asus OC direct cu 2 and I'm fine with it. beast modes everything.

Typically I buy price/performance, both companies products "just work" and I find myself enjoying releases from both camps.

While mining is a more compelling feature than any of the stuff Nvidia offers, it didn't really impact my choice this round.

Finding 290s in stock and @ msrp was all that I needed to make my decision.

if it weren't for mining I'd be on a 7770 and calling it good... because of mining my rig currently has a 4890 in it with stacks of cards in my basement mining and I didn't want my desktop mining.

originally I did go with quadfire 6950's for btc mining back when the sellprice was ~$5, but kept the cards under water as a solid setup, I'm fairly certain I never did break even on bitcoin, and if it wasn't winter with electric heat, in the land of $0.069 kilowatt hours... I probably wouldn't bother mining LTC either. My next upgrade for my DD will definately be more swayed by performance and overclock benchmarks than any altcoin setups, seeing as how fpga and asic designers are already tackling scrypt.

You cant even create a wallet unless access to them is granted.

Use an online wallet! Mining doesn't require any special permission through your router. But if you don't want to that's cool =p.

careful though, some of those online wallets have turned out to be scams in the past, keeping a cold storage wallet on your own pc is the best way

This is exactly what i did. Before the mining craze i got a 560ti for $70 and it does everything i need gaming wise. when the litecoin craze hit, i ordered 2 r9 290s for $399 each. I am happy to report in the last 2 weeks ive made $350 so far (cashed out to USD) and a few more weeks my new cards will be paid off.

I also picked up a few more on craigslist (6870 and a 6850 combined for $120) then i traded my dad my 560ti for his 5830 mining worldcoin like a boss right now.
