The beta went live for the backers :)

So far I have been liking it. I was having some problems trying to run it in window mode. I need to do some more testing on that and send in some feedback or check the known bugs list.

I mostly only care about window mode because of dual monitors and easy of switching to what is running on the second monitor.

Received the email just after I bought and downloaded Starbound.

Guess my weekend is booked :D

Played this for 7 hours. It's buggy as hell, but it's incredibly fun.

It's so buggy and unpolished that I'm highly skeptical of release being bug-free. I think a bulk of the bugs will make it to the retail version.

But the game itself is REALLY GOOD.

I'll be tinkering with it tonight. I don't think I'm going to spend a ton of time with it, I don't want to burn out on Betas. I watched a little bit of some twitch streams this morning, it seemed pretty well done.

Sounds good. I`ll keep an eye out for more details. Lets hope publishers do good job at squashing bugs. :)

Bugs can be squashed between beta and release. Fun is not something that can usually be added this late in release.

Make sure to report all the bugs you encounter. Also make sure to submit any suggestions as well.

I had about 30 minutes with it so far. I like it.

BETA issues - I think the UI needs some fine tuning, inventory needs to be cleaned up, performance is a bit choppy at times, camera is a bit wonky, graphics need polish and minor bugs need to be looked at.

The Good - Nice music, fun character creation, solid mission design (so far), combat is fun, visual feedback during combat is good and the writing is solid.

I'm going to spend more time with it this weekend, but I'm not going to be doing a proper beta test. I want the game to be fairly fresh to me when it is released.

So are you saying that it's fun, or not fun? I'm confused, lol. I watched a YouTube clip of the prison thing, didn't look bad.

He's saying it's a good thing it is fun because, unlike bugs you can't add fun this late in development, but you can fix bugs.

I see, I thought he was saying they would need to add fun in as well. I'm with you now!

We'll see how bugs go long term. I'm sure they'll clean a lot of them up, that's what a Beta is for (traditionally Alpha testing is when a game is feature incomplete, Beta is when it is feature complete, but needs to have the bugs worked out).

It'll probably be somewhat buggy in the end just on account of Unity. While developers are all excited about it, the engine seems to have some issues. I've yet to see a Unity game that didn't have sound issues, for example.

I haven't had a chance to play yet, it crashes on launch on my desktop and I just rebuilt my laptop (it does work on that).

I usually don't do a lot of beta testing of games, I prefer to wait until they are done and polished, often a few patches in, before I play them, but I will in this case because I want to see it do well. I really like the concept, and like this kind of game.

I commend you sir and will give you a hearty pat on the back when I pick up the final release. :D

$59.99 for early access ? Really ? I could see $29.99 with it increasing the further into development it gets but to start at $59.99 is too much. Is there any way to still get a DRM free copy anyway ?

the early access price is set by the kickstarter. If you don't want to pay that much, just wait for the retail release.

Not too worried. Its mean to say but the scale of this release and the size of the developer means patches will come out promptly as apposed to a triple A title where patches take forever strangely enough.

Oh I've not played it. I'm just saying that if a game is buggy, you can fix the bugs. If a game mechanics are not fun, you can't usually add fun when the game is already at this stage of development without huge set backs.

Does anyone know when it will be "official" or has the developer even set a release date?

I was having fun with it until one of my party members exploded... like a spore sausage.

It has its hiccups, but so far I'm enjoying it. Kickstarted this along with Shadowrun Returns. Both delivered. I know folks have reservations about Kickstarter, but in these two cases the results were good. Just do good due diligence beforehand :).

Looking forward to seeing more of the wasteland.

No concrete release. I'd assume 3-4 months. The Beta is not feature complete, it's still missing perks and traits and some content.

Well even at retail it looks like an indie release. I get the nostalgia but it honestly looks like a 90's game that could run on a mobile platform. It just looks awful. Definitely not paying full price for a game that looks like this.

I'm interested, but I'd like to wait for the release. I don't think I've ever kickstarted a game, and I don't intend to start now.

If the graphics make or break the experience for you, you're not the target demographic anyway. Save some money.

I think it looks nice for a game with a $3million dollar budget. The high price for early backer beta makes sense twofold; first, to limit beta to those that have a serious interest in the game - and second, to not piss off those that backed early on and bought the beta testing tier (which was cheaper).

The game is fun. The controls are a bit choppy, but manageable. Graphics are fine.

The only real issue I have is with the camera, especially indoors. Maybe I missed it, maybe there's an angle adjustment (I know the angle adjust automatically with zoom in/out but I would like to have more control than that). Beyond that, I'm happy with it.

The camera may be fixed, I don't remember what they decided. Fixed angle (not meaning fixed to one spot, but where the game controls it) is cheaper to implement since there are art assets you can leave out. They were originally going to do fixed, but then were saying they thought they'd have the resources to do it user controlled. I dunno what their final decision was.

No but $59 is AAA pricing and this is clearly not AAA quality.

Yes it is. AAA quality doesn't just refer to graphics. The story line, quests, and when you crank the graphics up it looks pretty damn nice. I'd take this any day of the week over BF4 or Crysis both of which are vastly better looking but are so bug ridden and half assed I wouldn't consider either of them to be AAA titles.

No clue why they don't have anything but the digital deluxe edition available. I won't pay a penny more than $39.99 for the regular version and I won't buy the collectors edition at all.

I agree, I would be on board at $40. Although I expected it, they stated all along that the price would increase for the official release.
