As someone who loves both Zelda and Dynasty Warriors I whole heartedly approve of this. DW spin-offs are usually really fun.

I'm sure this will sell some hardware. I don't "get it" but these koei musou games have a rabid fanbase

You either love the hell out of the DW games or you don't. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground there.

I plan on borrowing my brother's Wii U for this. In exchange I'll let him take my 3DS to play ALBW.

Gah, dynasty warriors is that it's just so mind numblinglys boring and repetitive.

Same combat over and over and over and over, there's not a lot of depth of well fun behind it.

Bushido blade or some other type of combat would be 100x better and more exciting.

If this uses the pro controller and/or gamepad I'm sold. If its only motion controls then theres pretty much no chance I get it.

Even with Link as the main playable character, by the looks of the gameplay it'll be exactly like Dynasty Warriors. Pass. I just want a new HD Zelda adventure on Wii U... please deliver Nintendo.

If I understood correctly this is NOT the HD Zelda we are expecting but just a spin-off, right? I think I'll pass. After initial awesomesauce-action hype these kinds of games tend to make me feel numb and bored.

It will support the gamepad since that's what comes in the box with the console. I expect it will support the pro controller too since it's essentially a gamepad with no screen.

Koei already ported a game to Wii U and it uses regular controllers, "Local co-operative can either be played split-screen or dual screen, where one person has the Wii U GamePad and the other player uses the Classic Controller Pro or Wii U Pro Controller." http://www.cubed3.com/review/1240/1/fist-of-the-north-star-ken-rage-2-wii-u-eshop.html#.UrHcKvRDtio

I have nothing against DW, but I don't want to see a Zelda version. I hope this doesn't sell well. Zelda has had some bad games and several mediocre ones, but doing senseless crossovers is really going to ruin the Zelda franchise.

Koei made a musou launch title for Wii U.
You just haven't heard of it because it is an eshop exclusive in NA, but boxed in JP.
Hokuto Musou - Fist of the North Star, Ken's Rage 2

I still don't know what to make of this, but right now I can't stop laughing.
It's so.......... unexpected?? And we ALL know about the Dynasty Warrior games... lol

Remember how everyone hated the idea of Capcom doing Zelda games and then those turned out to be two of the best Zelda games ever made? Why are people so god damn negative about everything different?

Because it's already a bit cheesy that Nintendo still clings to Zelda to begin with as opposed to actual original ideas.. but they could at least try to make a good game, rather than simply go where they feel the money is. If they want to keep making Zelda games, they need to show that they've still got a damn good reason to keep making Zelda games.

Nobody does anything original anymore. Furthermore games cost too much to make now. You can't risk being original on a big budget game, only on cheap indie games.

Japanese people love Nintendo, Japanese people love DW games. This is a good thing.

And this is why that's what I mainly play these days. I just finally got around to playing Dust: An Elysian Tail last week. Got it on Steam sale for under $5. Weighing what it cost, how it innovated (mainly in the battle system), and how much I enjoyed it, it was probably the best gaming purchase I've ever made. Not the absolute best game I've played, but still amazing for what it is.

I do plan to pick up A Link Between Worlds, though.

It's a simple spin-off. You act like this is the future of the Zelda franchise. I'm glad to see Nintendo being willing to branch out some more. Other M didn't turn out the best but I'm willing to give this a chance and actually wait to hear more about it. What's the point in shitting on a game with no real information given on it?

Welcome to the internet.

I'm not sure I'm "shitting on" anything. What fans want is relevant information - just because my opinion isn't positive doesn't mean your opinion is better. Trolling is one thing, but negative opinions aren't uncalled for in general.

I do happen to think that Zelda games in particular, having such a rich heritage, should be about quality and not quantity. I don't want any more stupid crap like the CD-i games. I want it to at least appear that Nintendo is trying to make a good product and not SOLELY going for our money.

You are wishing for the game to be a failure, if that isn't shitting on it I don't know what is.

Better picture quality? I'm not a fan of the graphics, oh well...it would be nice to see Link do more than 3 attacks though.

The art style is very weird. Like a mix between DW and Zelda. It looks much much better in motion in the trailer, but it is still something to get used to.

Hyrule Warriors implies that you'll be able to play as multiple characters right?
Who would be on the roster?

Nobody knows but someone found code for Link, Young Link, Adult Link, Toon Link, Gannon, Gannon 2, and Zelda/Sheik.

It looks fine. Zelda's art styles have always changed though.

This is crap. Way to ruin the mythology.

Can't wait for Dr. Link and Link and Zelda Dream Team.

Mario Kart didn't ruin Mario. Zelda and Metroid weren't ruined by the archery game and smash. The sky is not falling. Musou games are really popular in some areas. This is just simple harmless fun.

I think the CD-i zelda games ruined any mythology.

This game looks interesting if you are into those DW games. I never played them; so I can't knock it but it just looks like a simple hack n slash. Are the dynasty warrior games Multiplayer? If this has multiplayer it may be somewhat fun.

Those are not canon, and nobody has played them anyway. It's outsourced junk.
If it's not canon, it isn't possible to ruin the mythology.

Is Link's participation in Smash Brothers canon? Should they update the ZELDA timeline after each one? Every cameo?
A side game is a side game is an outsourced game. I don't know why some of you are trying to hold a Musou game up to the standards of a mainline game. Tecmo Koei is making this, NOT Nintendo. It's a Musou game. You know exactly what it's going to be. NOT the next main ZELDA.

I agree with the graphics quality. Either they better have a large number of enemies to justify the scaling back of the graphics, or this better be an alpha.

Having played a lot of Dynasty Warrior games, I've noticed this to be a trend with the series.

Usually to justify the huge number of enemies on screen, graphics quality of maybe the support soldiers that run around willy-nilly and/or backgrounds tend to suffer. There were usually slowdowns when performing certain special attacks and a lot of enemies were on screen. In the last one on the PS3, it was a big improvement over the PS2 versions. Graphics quality was a lot better, slowdowns were nearly non-existent but it was nothing compared to something like "Last of Us".

Now, with the Wii U being relatively at or around the performance of the 360/PS3 except that the processor speed is lower-- 1.24GHz vs. 3.0 to 3.2GHz in the PS3/360, I would not be surprised that a few compromises were made like with the PS2 versions. It'd be like pairing a Radeon HD 7570 in a system with a ultra-low power Celeron, and expect it to run a game at 720p with medium-high details and a lot of characters on screen expecting it to run at a steady 30FPS.

We cannot expect miracles coming out of that. :p

The graphics will probably be improved over what we see now, but I don't think it'll be a significant upgrade unfortunately.

Other than that, I hope we have other characters besides Link.

Zelda for the hell of it? Hey, she kicked ass in the Smash Brothers series if you knew how to use her.

Though there weren't a lot of characters that actually fights in the series alongside Link, it would be nice to add some variety to the game given this is just a spin-off.

Musou games are more than just Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors. One Piece, Fist of the North Start, Gundam, Sengoku, have all had the Musou treatment at some point. If some of those names sound familiar congrats. If an anime gets popular enough they'll musou it.

Anyways the gameplay...

The majority of each level is simply running from objective to objective and beating the tar out of the regular mooks. These guys are really generic looking (they get lazy as fuck with sprites) and more often than not utterly incapable of defending themselves. There are usually a few different looking mooks in the horde who are capable of doing moderate damage.

The correct way to go about it is to use the hordes of fodder to increase the size of your combo, thus building up your power, and use your dodge attacks to bound from one to another pummeling them into the ground, and then unleash that attack power through your stronger attacks on the enemies that are actually a threat. You can get through it by just mashing buttons sure, but then again you can just point and click your way through any FPS from that perspective. Or you can be bounding and leaping from mook to mook before smashing the real threat.

There are also lots of boss battles. These are much different. Bosses are all just as tough and good as you are, with their own special attacks. So you get some rather interesting battles here as well.

The games all have a ton of fan service, dialogue, and inside jokes. So if you know the source material well, you'll have a blast watching the characters talk shit to each other. Some of them have multiplayer modes as well.

It's not for everyone. But if you like that sort of hectic combat and smashing faces like an anime, and you like the source material odds are you'll enjoy the game. If that's not your sort of thing and you're not rather familiar with source material, they aren't all that fun.

Exactly this.

It's just a silly, enjoyable fun game beating up a lot of enemies on screen with ridiculous moves seeing how high you can get your combo up. It's probably why I stuck with the series for quite a long time.

I disagree about Other M; put the cutscenes aside and it was a very good Metroid game.

Very polarizing.
You either love that one or hate it.
It seems most people that hate it, blame the shit story, those that like it, didn't really pay attention to it (It's quite forgettable, minus THE BABY THE BABY).
I hated the fact they force you to play on the wiimote, when the game is fully 3D. But I heard that was Sakamoto's decision to not allow the nunchuk, just like he wrote that awful script.
If you ask me, Other M wasn't Tecmo's fault, it was Sakamoto's.

Ironically, here we are once again with a Tecmo collaboration. Who knows how this is going to turn out....

The problem most people have with Other M is that it was extremely sexist. What made it even worse is they did that to Samus, who was thought of as one of the few women in gaming that was portrayed in an extremely negative, weak, sexist, or just a piece of ass and tits.

It was really an unforced error and they managed to provide a text book example of all the issues women had with games and gamers for years.

The clock speed of a processor doesn't matter nearly as much as you're claiming. Keep in mind, the Xbox One and Ps4 are clocked with a processor speed of 1.8 ghtz per core. The Wii U was made with a 45nm process and has much more cache than the PS3 or Xbox 360 have. It's also several generations ahead of the Xbox 360 processor.
