Battlefield 4 **Official Discussion Thread**

Just played for about 30 mins, crashed and didn't get any points. I check before I play, and after. I wasted 30 mins of 50% boost, dammit! I should just stop playing until they fix it, so I will stop getting pissed off and whining about it. When it works I enjoy it a lot, but that's rare.

This game has some of the most useless / oblivious people I've ever seen. I love flanking and killing 8 people... and having time to reload in the middle because not a single person thinks to look back at the screams and gunfire erupting from behind them.

What I don't love is being 90 percent of a team's revives... while top fragging. If you're going to spend a time greater than 3 seconds in an area, drop a box. If you're not fighting for your life, revive the guy at your feet. If you see something, spot it. People forfeit thousands and thousands of points per game just because they get so hilariously tunnel visioned.

Also if you want to win on Op Locker just run straight to C at the start and tell anyone that stops to sit on a point that they're dumb. I just go straight to the the gun emplacement and by the time you get on it, all the people that stopped for the points will be meandering on in for you to massacre.

Well I finally had enough of the buggy unstableness of the game.
Yesterday evening I ran to microcenter bought 6 more gigs of ram and win8.1 and a few other things I needed.
Installed it, cleaned my whole rig, and redownloaded BF4 premium and I have to say its, night and day difference from how it use to run on my win7 OS.
I played for 4+ hours lastnight with 4 of my buds and it was just as smooth as BF3 is. Not a single hickup or issue hardware or network wise. There was one crash but it was the server, cause we all got kicked at the same time.

Now I just need to get use to this win8 interface.

You mean like how quickly Bioshock Infinite, Assassin's Creed 4, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Tomb Raider were discounted? Because the same thing happened to all those games. They all had some sort of brief discount or sale a few weeks after their releases. Why is promotional pricing not indicative of anything for those games, but indicative of bad things for BF4?

Why are you comparing single-players games to a game that people buy ONLY for multiplayer? Which is a completely different animal in itself. It took MONTHS for BF3 to see any sort of discount where as BF4 was discounted $30-35 in LESS than a month.
Let's look at the track record of the some of the publishers you listed above. 2K, Square Enix and Rockstar are well known for discounting their games rather quickly so none of the titles you listed really don't come as a surprise.
EA is notorious for milking their cash cows and the BF series is one of them. In a way I feel bad for DICE because I think they have good intentions, however EA has made things tremendously difficult for them moving forward.

OK, I normally am a slightly below average player right, typically 0.5 K/D ratio and so forth. Well I had a pretty good run going on locker map last night using the bouncy grenade thingy, and I got booted/banned for cheating. I was 18 to 2 and booted for cheating.../sigh It said punk buster detected I was using a hack. Man I see people going like 75 to 0 and not getting booted, so I'm left wondering if there is something on my system that it triggers from?

The admin probably just wanted to kick you. Used to happen to me on bfbc2 when I quick sniped. They would Just say they found something.

I spoke too soon. Game froze last night.

I get so many of the boosts and I have nothing left to unlock, aside from the the fighters. And sniper rifles/recon. But I use neither of those. I probably have 10-14 of them from Battlepacks. Wish I would get more camos instead. I hardly have any of the camos unlocked.

That, and weapon attachments for weapons without western optics. I can't stand the Chinese junk some of the weapons (like the ACE) come with.

You are the only person who thinks this matters.

I want to know what servers you play on, because every time I try to flank, I run into a stacked squad doing the same thing and get shot in the face.

I'm pretty sure he was probably talking about a one time occurence.

When they start playing around trying to fix the game for others,, all it does is mess the game up for the ones that didn't have any issues.

Anybody notice half the trees on the China rising maps are indestructible? It's quite irritating to be rolling an M1 full tilt and get stopped dead in my tracks by a twig tree.

Just had the bug where you're stuck after being revived. Can't accept revive, can't return to deploy screen. Sad to see this bug still exists.

I'd like to leave a few notes for those of us playing BF4 -

After many days of working with my 965BE C3 which is overclocked to 4.140Ghz and my 570sli setup, I have come to a few conclusions:

1. Frostbite 3 is not a very good engine for fluidity, CPU spikes are frequent and take smoothness away from the game.

2. Put Lighting Quality to low, all other settings to High or Ultra, this will take away the majority of the CPU spikes. Something in Frostbite 3 with Lighting is what creates the majority of them. No other option removes so many of the CPU spikes, i.e. Field of View, Resolution, etc. Lighting Quality just seems to be buggy.

3. On a 1080p single monitor setup, users of a 570 with 1.28GB's of VRAM do not need to worry about memory limitations. Run HBAO, Ultra textures, 2x MSAA etc the most memory I have logged is 1,020 megs loaded (unless you have a bunch of other background system stuff, then you need to work on your platform) at native resolution.

4. Don't worry so much about those CPU upgrades, my 965BE is enough for this game to utilize my 570sli setup to run HBAO and a large combination of Ultra/High settings (less Lighting Quality to low to remove CPU spikes) plus 2x MSAA and my perfoverlay.graph is fairly horizontal for both GPU & CPU providing good 60fps gaming. I see rare dips into the mid 50's, other times it is 70-80fps with vsync off. - IF, you are running a 680 nvidia or a 290x AMD card, you may want to consider a more current quad-core CPU, otherwise the majority of people should be in good shape. I believe even a seasoned overclocker on an AMD X3 435 should be able to get good 60fps gaming if they manage system resources appropriately, albeit probably not at 1080p but maybe down to 1440x900 with medium settings, no HBAO/SSAO.

5. Sli setups should be welcome, GPU consistency is good, I encourage it if you have the motherboard to support it and at least a 560(ti) or better. Heck, maybe even 460's would be decent, it seems to scale very well and stutter is non-existent to me or seen in my graphs.

6. Ram speed over 1,600mhz does nothing, I've run up to about 1,840 with over-volting, it actually seems to do worse.

7. Those on Intel i5 Sandy and Ivy bridge setup, disable HT. Those on AMD systems, don't worry about C1E or Cool & Quiet, neither have any affect. Windows Reg setup for core-parking is just a topic for someone to sound smart, forget about this, the game will utilize what you provide it and in that respect Frostbite 3 does a good job (hence good FX chip results).

Happy gaming everyone, I await patches to smooth things out further, the rest is outside of our control. I hope no one minds me leaving these notes from my experience.

I wonder if they have the lighting threaded out, on the CPU cores. I have a Phenom II X6 running at 3.7ghz as well as an overclocked northbridge (Phenom II's love that) and have zero issues with CPU spikes or stuttering. (videocard is a single Radeon HD7870). It could also be an issue of the Phenom II quad core not being enough to drive SLI smoothly, since the game is so GPU heavy and the game scales well with more CPU threads. they've talked about Mantle allowing them to thread out the CPU/GPU talk. It will be interesting to see the reality in a few weeks. However, I'm content to stick with single card setups. I did SLI early on. Despite it's maturity, many of the old headaches remain.

I thought I was going to be able to play ultra at 1680x1050 with GTX780 at constant 60fps? Spec in my signature and it stutters and dips to high 30s and low 40s at times?

ultra should be CAKE at that res for a 780. I have a Radeon 7870 and it averages 57fps on Ultra with SweetFX running for SMAA and slight dynamic saturation boost to the colors.

I would guess that either A. there's some kinks in your system somewhere that might benefit from a fresh windows install and/or spring cleaning on the heatsinks and thermal paste....

or B. it really seems that this game doesn't like quad cores very much, especially Intel.

Latest patch Dec 16...

Check the BF4 Forums...

- SLI and Crossfire both rendered useless by rampant flickering - either turn off or you cant play
- Accept Revive Bug still present
- Netcode apparently the same / worse (ie hit detection & getting killed by people who you just pumped a full clip into yet they have 75 health left )

Really am trying to love this game, but DICE really does have appalling QA and my patience is running out.

We played the other night and actually gave up since my mate had 6 crashes in the evening and decided to call it a night. I had 1 crash.

The experience is becoming jaded..

From the release notes:

-Made the NVidia 331.82 driver version mandatory for all players.
-Disabled DirectX 11.1 on NVidia cards that have outdated drivers.

I'm on a pair of GTX570s and have been using 314.22 w/o issue. I believe all drivers after that basically don't work for the 500 series cards?

This latest patch is a disaster. Can not play with sli/crossfire enabled. results in the whole ground flickering.

331.82 being required is a joke too. I was running 331.93 and tried switching to the .82 drivers, still flickers.

How about posting the full changelog, guys?

Dec 16 PC Game Update Notes
-Fix for a crash that would cause the game to stall, resulting in a sound loop. This should eliminate most of the problems relating to this.
-Fix for the SUAV (introduced in the China Rising expansion pack) not exploding when hitting enemy soldiers. While these indeed should be deadly, they were never designed for “roadkilling” opponents.
-Fixed one of the issues related to the so-called “Netcode” (see below for details).
-Fix for an issue where 4x the damage from a vehicle's minigun would be applied to the chest when a player had the Defense specialization equipped.
-Fix for player tags not always showing when needed to, resulting in players shooting team members.
-Fix for graphical flickering appearing on terrain.
-Fixed the instance where players suddenly would transition into Spectator Mode while playing the Defuse game mode.
-Fix for a Defuse bug where none of the teams would win a round by letting the timer run out.
-Fix for players getting stuck in the revive screen after being killed.
-Fix for players getting stuck in the kill camera after being revived.
-Fix for the game mode specific ribbons being counted twice in the multiplayer progression.
-Made NVidia 331.82 or later driver versions mandatory for all players.
-Disabled DirectX 11.1 on NVidia cards that have outdated drivers.
-Fixed driver version not being properly detected on NVidia Optimus systems.
-Fixed a minor crash that could occur when bringing up the scoreboard.

“Netcode” improvement
We’ve addressed the so-called “Kill trading”. This refers to when two players fire at each other and, seemingly, both die at the same time. The time window where a bullet could cause damage from an already dead player is now calculated as intended, decreasing the timeframe when players with high latency could get a kill, even though they should be dead according to the server.

UPDATE: We have noticed that players who have SLI enabled on their graphics card may experience graphical flickering. Also, we're looking into the issue where the revive bar would get stuck on-screen in some instances. Both of these have our attention, and we're investigating them.

More good than bad here. The SLI issue is a disgrace, but the kill trading fix, sound loop crash fix, teammate 3D spotting fix, and the revive bug fix are all highly welcome.

I really want to love this game, I really do. But there's just something about it that I can't put my finger on. It doesn't feel right and just the technical problems makes it hard for me to get into. Too many times I've been killed what seems like instantly where I've hit a guy several times and saw hit markers.

I've also been incredibly disappointed with the maps. I haven't played a lot of China Rising yet, but most of the Vanilla maps suck imo. Most of the maps seem so unforgiving for infantry. If you aren't in a vehicle, you're hiking across land or water and getting picked off. I really hope they start to iron out a lot of the bugs soon

Fixing the bugs isn't going to help the fact that you are getting killed when running on foot on a large map.

Also, that issue is something that is particular to BF4. It happens in almost any BF game. Take BF2 for example. Try running on foot on Mashtuur City in the desert. You won't last very long.

Seems like you need to change the way you play a little bit. If you only like Infantry gameplay, you could try domination. Its definitely a fun game mode.

This particular line left me stumped from the changelog:

- Fix for the issue where the game would get stuck in loading screen when players tried to join a Second Assault map without actually owning Second Assault.

I thought Second Assault wasn't due for PC until January or something?

They usually have the new DLC servers up early for internal testing. They invite internet famous Youtubers, streamers, and MLG types to those servers privately. But they will still show in the server browser for all to see even though regular players can't get on them.

I surmise that when regular players click to join those servers they would get stuck. Thus the need for the patch.

That's your argument? That I'm the ONLY person on Planet Earth that buys BF titles for multi-player?

The argument is that your separation of single player and multi player games for the sake of deciding which sale actually "matters" is completely arbitrary and bogus.

This is false. The core-parking reg fix on Windows 7 *does* work. It worked magic for me and allowed me to keep my HT turned on. I've seen it fix many other users. This fix has been around since Battlefield 3 and is widely known to help tremendously if CPU spikes are happening.

Don't discount a known fix because you don't use it.

Spidey is correct. It does work and has been verified many times over by Intel users.

I used one of the 100% boost items last night when I figured out to access them.

Really sucks for all the people that can't play this game...I'm well over 100hrs and had little to no issues. Game has been rock solid for me from a stability standpoint.

Once again, apples to orangutans. Large multiplayer titles like BF require a completely different approach when it comes to development and maintenance. They're continually being patched/optimized by multiple teams over the game's life-cycle, thus larger budget, more people to pay, over a prolonged period of time. It can be said that AAA titles that focus on SP do indeed get some level of support, but it's from a single team that is focused on the smaller audience that take advantage of the tacked-on multiplayer in games like Tomb Raider & AC4. However, this usually ends within a few months after release depending upon the developer which is often outsourced.
