Should I get laptop or tablet for newbie Aunt?

What is she going to be using it for or what do you envision as her main uses of the device you get?

Stay away from w8 if possible.Father-in-law has w8 and has hell navigating

Get her an Ipad! its a bit expensive but it is nice, well-made, and easier to use than most things on the market.

You really have to know how she's likely to use it. All of the major tablet platforms, Android, iOS and Windows 8.x/RT have their strengths and weeknesses.

Another Vote for the Ipad. Probably you can get the Air + casing and setup her email and browser.

has she specifically asked for one? if she has never used one before why would you assume she has any need to use one now?

but if you must, id just get her an ipad

Im with so and so, my uncles back in vietnam use ipads and when they were brought a samsung galaxy tab they had trouble using it

I showed her a laptop, Ipad and a Smartphone. She seems to like the idea of a Smartphone. She mentioned she did not want to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time. Do they have Verizon over there?

Over where?

Probably not. You will probably have to get her a GSM unlocked phone opposed to CDMA(Verizon).

my vote is tablet. If shes never used a computer she has a lot to learn anyway, and tablet might be a slightly simpler and cheaper starting point

How about a surface 2? good for both email and web browsing :)
My vote is tablet, and would use apple Ipad.
Screens are more responsive...and easier to use for the less experienced users.

If your considering surface , go with a surface pro 2....that way she has the real Windows 8 and not rt.
