Insanely stupid statements like this are why we refer to analysts around here as "professional guessers."

"This is one of those unthinkable but absolutely possible deals," Fitz-Gerald told "Varney & Co." host Stuart Varney. "I think that Apple and Microsoft may not only have to work together for the next few years but may even see a merger in the next five to ten years from now because they're going to have to take on the Google/Android/Facebooks of the world."

Considering how badly Microsoft wants to be Apple, this wouldn't surprise me in the least bit.

MicrApple

soon to be sued by Snapple for copyright infringement because they don't want confusion with one of their drinks..... :D

That idiot probably gets paid a lot of money to 'analyze', more than most of us working in a real job.

And I have to LOL at FB of all companies, a company that has no actual product besides a social network website, posing a threat to Apple AND MS!!

An Apple/MS merger? Better start with something simpler like oil and water, or Israelis and Palestinians. The U.N. and decisive action. Pretty much anything else.

Take on facebook? Neither of them play in facebooks space. Doesn't even make sense. Facebook must compete with with google. Now if you say that facebook may merge with MS, or apple now we are talking. They at least need to keep good relationships with anyone but google who has a smart phone play.

I'm in finance, and while I don't cover this industry specifically, I'm going to have to call absolute bullshit on this one.

One of those "make a name for myself with outrageous statements!" type analysts.......

Tomorrow's dumb headline: "Analyst: Microsoft to Make Next iPhone"

They've been in bed with each other since 1997, just look at how much they still cross-license from one another. There's a huge reason why Windows Phone gets a pass while Samsung doesn't: MS pays and Samsung doesn't. Apple is also Microsoft's biggest ActiveSync licensee, and OS X is a huge source of income from Office.

Merging though, NEVER gonna happen. Microsoft doesn't have anything to offer Apple with their OS and Apple's hardware focused business model is completely different from Microsoft's software focused business model (as much as MS would love to change that...).

His next prediction:

Burger King and McDonalds will merge for form McKing. It's necessary to fight off the KFC/Taco Bell combo.

I kind of feel like most analysts and researchers should be round up, brought outside, and put in front of a firing squad.

Hey, dont underestimate Taco Bell. They will be the only restaurant to survive the franchise wars.

Macy Penny's anyone?

Of all the smart alec comments, yours made me laugh out loud. Bravo.

But seriously, that analyst is retarded. Apple is on the decline and more and more of their users are getting wise to their planned obsolescence crap. It's best they stay separate, and that's what will happen.

Compete with Facebook? When is it going to take it's sharp downturn as the Myspace 2.0 that it is? Microsoft and Apple have nothing to fear from Facebook. At least Microsoft and Apple produce valuable products. What has Facebook really ever done besides offer a haven for people to share too much information and then capitalize on all that same user information. Facebook could fail tomorrow if people simply stopped using it (I realize this won't happen, just stating an opinion). :D

Glad to see that one went over as well as a fart in a diving helmet.
If there is only one thing PC and Mac users will stand together on, its to keep MS and Apple apart, forever.
Besides, the Federal Trade Commission would never let that merger happen. Microsoft breather millions into a busted ass Apple to keep it alive so the Anti trust division of the Department of Justice wouldn't fine the living hell out of them for being a monopoly.
And face it, if Apple had the balls to license its OS software instead of controlling every little aspect of its business, Microsoft wouldn't even exist beyond second rate office programs.

Apple would never be able to support even a small variety of the third hardware that Microsoft does without having more blue screens of death than a corrupt version of Windows 95.

Apple did license its software and it failed argument doesn't hold water.

Also for everyone saying the FTC won't allow it, consider they let ATT get back together, times change. If google closes in on a monopoly it could happen.

The bigger problem is how exactly do apple and MS work together? It doesn't make any sense at all... Both of them overlap in software by like 100%, but at the same time their software is completely different so how would they go forward merging? I don't think FTC would be the problem. Also both are flush with cash, they can certainly go longer than 5 years on what each of them currently has throwing billions at this idea or that idea to keep investors thinking a turn around is coming. Both also have a long history of comebacks. If they were to merge it would be one of the biggest failures in history bigger than sprint / Nextel.

The future is full of possibilities!

EA and Blizzard might merge, AMD and Intel, Seagate and Western Digital. Maybe even Samsung and Apple could merge!

Wow, what other asinine predictions has this "professional guesser" squeezed out. The fact that he mentions Facebook as being a threat to either Apple or Microsoft solidifies his idiocy.

Not all that far fetched, probably. At the vary least it will probably require Microsoft and Apple working together to prevent us from getting trapped in a Google controlled world. The sooner they start the better their chances.

I would like to take a moment to remind everyone that these people drive the market these days. This is the same kind of speculation that sees record oil prices when we have the biggest surplus in 30 years. These people are the ones that decide to nearly destroy one company and drive another's shares through the roof because of a story they read on a tech blog over the weekend.

Aint no way in hell that will happen. There is no reason for Apple to acquire MS, and MS doesnt have the funds to afford Apple. Microsoft is for average consumers while Apple serves a niche market, at least with their Mac OS. There are so many other reasons to mention which will take days...

True, but Wouldent microsoft and apple be stronger as separate companies? The more companies there are the more of a threat to Apple they are.

Google can't put together a competant Desktop/Laptop OS. Chrome OS is a laughing stock, generally.

That is like hoping and praying that one day, oil will finally mix with water.

In his defense, who would have thought that KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut that were all big players in their own right would merge.

Only thing is that they didn't ACTUALLY become Kentacohut, so consumers weren't really aware of the merger.
