Nexus-Five thread

I text my Brother asking him what his battery was at today ?

I was shocked at what he told me, super killer awesome battery life  After 6h 44m unplugged off charger, he still had 70% battery left.

Then I asked him a very important question. On Screen time. He checked and said 33 minutes. LOL  33 minutes is like not even touching the phone at all, and he says he doesn't it use the phone at all during work, just sits on WiFi all day at work, laying on his desk. So another Nexus phone with mediocre battery life

It does seem like my old HTC One has twice the battery life using the same sized battery...

1d8h with 3 hours screen time. I don't see the problem.

It's not the standby time that's the issue on smartphones today. Its Screen time = EVERYTHING.

Yeah, my Galaxy S4 can last for 72 hours, if barely ever touch it for three days

3 hours Screen Time, is pretty poor IMO. I use 3h On Screen Time in half my workday. I am on my phone non stop during work; making phone calls, sending texts to clients, reading client e-mails in the field, using GPS Navigation, etc... By 5:00pm I have 6 hour On Screen time on my phone, and I need a phone that can handle that much and still have battery life left.

The Nexus 5 is NOT that phone.

22 hours on, 35% battery left, 1 hour 45 minute on screen time.

The problem is a few programs refusing to turn off. I have an app for jetting my race engine that used the GPS for all 22 hours using 70% of the battery. It's happened a few times with other programs.

You were complaing about the battery life as if its the phones fault.

Why the Nexus 5 came with only a 2,300mAh battery is beyond me
It's $350. You want a 3,000mAh battery, go spend $650. That why I don't see what the problem is.

The Moto X is $350 and lasts twice as long.

The Nexus 5 is a POS as far as I could tell. The launcher can still be lagged, the speed advantage in daily use is non-existent, battery and camera are crap, screen is washed out.

Moto X is also a smaller screen, lower resolution, and entirely different SoC that was designed for low power usage and special functionality. Hardly a fair comparison.

Also where do you people work that you have no access to a charger? My god. With all the phones I've had over time I have 4 chargers at home (2 in the bedroom and 2 in the family room). One at work and one in each car with spare cables so I can charge TWO phones while in the car.

Honestly some of you people are wrapped up in battery life way too damn much.

Consider that the Moto X accomplishes that with a 720p AMOLED screen (eats way less power than a 1080p LCD), and dedicated, task specific, low power hardware. Silverghost's point is that giant batteries only get dropped into phones at the $650+ pricepoint. Moto X doesn't get its battery life from a giant battery and still costs $550 outside holiday pricing, $200 more than the Nexus 5.

Its not that people don't have access to chargers (or spare batteries), its that they don't want to be forced to be tethered to one all day. Remember these devices are meant to be highly portable. Its common for people to be out all day running errands or other tasks and not necessarily being within reach of a charger during that time. Expecting at least 1 full day of use between charges is not at all unreasonable.

Exactly :) I am on the run all day at work, and plugging in my phone to a wall charger is a pain in the butt, sometimes I need to get up and run, and typically just leave my phone in my pants pocket. As well as in the car, I am in and out of my truck, I don't have time to plug it in, and wait for a charge.

When I had my Note 2, and was getting 7h On Screen time, and overall 20+ hours of total usage, on heavy extreme nonstop use. That felt so good, and comfortable, not having to babysit my battery, it was freedom from being married to the charger. Could leave the phone in my pocket and never have worry about it, I knew the battery was good to go all day and night long, no matter what type of heavy use I put that phone through. That is a very nice feeling to have.

But I got rid of my N2, mainly due to the large size, I just couldn't use it one handed, it was a two hander, and that is not cool.

Another story on battery;

All depends on how you use your phone during the day;

My Wife and Brother, both use their phones almost the exact same at work. It sits on their desk all day, and they might make a couple phone calls throughout the day, and send a dozen texts or so, but that's about it, pretty much not using their phone much during work,. Both come home, tell me they have like 70% battery still left after 14 hours unplugged. Now me, I have had those exact same phones both my Wife and Brother use, I come home, with like 15% battery left after 14 hours. Why is that ? Because for my job, I am a Project Mngr. hammering my phone nonstop all day, with like 2 hours of just phone calls, I send 100 texts a day, I read and send a dozen e-mails a day with attachments, I run GPS every day, I look up info on the web, and I am on the run, in and out of the office, going to job sites, etc... I need a phone that gives at least 5h On Screen time, and overall 15+ hours of battery life, with heavy extreme use.

Agreed. What's so hard about setting your phone on top of a Qi charger?

Zorachus. At this point the problem isn't the phone it's you. You have access to a charger yet refuse to use it because you're too set in your ways to pull your phone out of your pocket and set it down on a charger. If you really use it that much how is having it in your pocket and advantage over having it charging on a Qi charger in front of you?

I hadn't even thought about a Qi charger. Thanks makes my argument even more compelling. Me I have no issues taking the 5 seconds to pull my phone out of my pocket and plugging it in although in the future a Qi charger would make it even easier so I'll have to keep that in mind when I leave Verizon in June and get a new phone.

Qi charger is so much win. It's just fun to drop my Nexus 7 on its Qi pad. It even charges through the tablet's case. Wireless charging is one of my two big wishes, along with a bigger screen, for the iPhone 6.

I keep phone charger cables at strategic locations throughout my home and car. I even have a cable plugged in at my bedside for overnight charging and internet radio.

You kinda contradicted yourself there......

"note 2 is 2 handed, cannot do that"

"need a better battery life so I can text, look up stuff on the web, email, look at documents, send documents"

Do you really need a 1 handed device to text/email/look at documents?......:confused:

edit: Speech to text is a wonderful thing....

Nexus 5 auto brightness is probably the main offender. It's really bright so I installed Lux and gained an hour of battery life.

It'll be interesting to see AT battery tests since they standardize to 200 nits as opposed to auto-brightness or brightness settings (which are not standardized across phones).

There were actually leaked numbers, but they were pulled so not sure of the validity, but the results were quite surprising.

For those that have been questioning whether the N5 display is "washed out", this is from AT's review:

It’s interesting to hear some Nexus 5 users complain that the display seems undersaturated, since that kind of end user feedback reflects subjective comparison. It also suggests to me that a large percentage of the population doesn’t know what some colors or system elements actually should be. Even for me, looking at the green elements inside the Google Play store on the Note 3 in movie mode or Nexus 5 initially seemed slightly more muted than normal. The reality is that this is what they actually should look like. We’ve just become accustomed to their oversaturated appearance on virtually every other device.

This kind of expectation about what looks right and what doesn’t is rather telling for the state of display calibration in Android handsets, and how OEMs have used oversaturated colors to increase retail shelf appeal. Unfortunately the reality is that oversaturated colors do seem to win taste tests among shoppers, the same way that TVs in most big boxes do. We’ve been looking at them for so long that well calibrated displays like Nexus 5 initially do look noticeably different.

The end result is easy to sum up, however – Nexus 5 has the best calibrated display I’ve seen so far in any Android handset. It’s also leaps and bounds more accurate and controlled than its predecessor display in the Nexus 4.

the anandtech review is well thought out, as is usual. Unfortunately with this camera update in the wings, it'll be out of date pretty quickly!

When is the camera update projected? I've seen rumors but was not aware of any official update?

That is just what is was looking for. Sounds like it will be excellent and just what is needed to make an awesome phone even better.

Well fellas I just ordered myself a black 16gb Nexus 5 to replace an aging Motorola Phoiton. I am also bailing on Sprint and going to Straight Talk in my area and can't wait for this baby to ship out.

I wonder if it will ship with 4.4.1 on it?

LG Qi charger came. Works great with the N5 and is super convenient. Warms the phone a bit when charging.

Also received the spigen hybrid case. Great feel and makes the phone more solid IMO.

4.4.1 camera app is definitely better

lower shutter lag, HDR+ works great... still some problems focusing/taking photos with subject movement

4.4.1 sideloaded.
Camera is far more responsive, and my LG Tone headset doesn't try to blow out my eardrums.
And Qi charging is still fucking awesome.
I would trade it for an X at the same price if the X had wireless charging built in. But it doesn't. So I'll keep the N5.

All of the phones that went out the first week had an update out of the box so I'm wondering if the new ones will update to 4.1.1 right out of the gate. My friend's phone arrives tomorrow so we'll see what his does.

Anyone want to trade their N5 for a like new AT&T S4? Haha fuuu :(

My replacement came yesterday, new phone. Still 4.4, no update prompts.

If it's available how come it doesn't update automatically OTA for everyone?

They roll out the update in waves, the idea being if there are serious issues reported with the update that they haven't updated ALL devices at once.
