Ok im getting in to litecoin.

Here is what i have:

PSU's
Rosewill Lightning 1300w
Rosewill Lightning 1000w

x2 HIS IceQ 7950
x1 Powercolor AX7950
x1 MSI 6950
x4 Powercolor AX7870

x1 Asrock Fatality 990fx
x1 GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3
x1 AMD 8320
x1 AMD Sempron 145
x4 4gb DDR3
x2 64gb SSDs

should i sell the Asrock and 8320 and get something more cheaper?
also i was looking at the r9 290's i think i can buy 4 of them and i can save some electricity or x10 7870

my budget to make some changes is about $2000. any ideas?

Are these dedicated mining rigs? If so, there's zero need for an 8 core cpu and 990fx boards.

Just get some ultra low power processors and a single stick of system RAM, like 1GB. ALL of the processing is done on the GPUs. No need for hard drives either, use a USB thumbdrive linux distro.

I ran my original Bitcoin rigs on a single core Sempron, 1GB of RAM, 3x video cards and a USB thumb drive, not a problem at all

i will be trying to run 4 to 6 cards on a single board, thats why i want to use the 990fx.

go for the r290s as their hash rate is in the 900khash/s for $400 and current litecoin rates you would breakeven in 6 weeks at full bore per card. Also if you are looking at hooking as many cards to a motherboard you will need 1x pcie to 16 adapters and most likely need to wire in your second psu (green and a ground to fire up at the same time) (the 7850 are in the 200 range where the 7950's are in the 600 range )

4x 290s is estimated at 1200 watts per extreme psu as a reference.

thanks you for the information i will be buying those as soon they appears available at newegg.

i should sell the bulldozer and ram and get another sempron?

I would honestly just use what you have, and if it's power hungry like the 8320, just down clock and down volt that sucker. I'm thinking of getting 3 7870's and putting them in my old x58 with a W3520. I'm just gonna down clock it to like 1.5ghz and disable all but 1 core to minimize the power it pulls.

you can also turn off cores on the 8320 assuming your mb supports it i can on mine. so you can turn it into a 2 core low volt cpu

Only problem is you cant find 3x 7870's at a reasonable price right now

They pop up for $150 sometimes, which doesn't seem too bad for ~400kh/s. That's $450 for about 1200kh/s. But I would prefer a 7970 or 7950 of course :p

The real problem are these horseshit electricity rates here. $.35/kwh due to being above the average, fuck you california and your low power allowance.

even the risers are expensive now, i bought (6) 16x and (6) 1x powered for $92 and i remember i saw those before for 5 bucks each free shipping at amazon.

I thought I read the XFX cards in general are shit for mining and overheat.

I had originally planned to just get a single partner cooled 290 once those hit later on, but now I think I will just build a second rig.

my current system is an amd 955 black edition cpu with 8 gigs of ram and an amd 6870

only has a single pci express slot and 650w power supply

I think I'll keep that one and maybe add a 280x later on for dedicated mining, and build a second rig with:

-Kaveri A10 APU
-dual gpu capable board
-1000+ watt power supply, higher efficient rating, probably gold
-dual 290 with better cooling
16 GB ram, fastest I can find.

with mantle that system will have 3 gpus to play with for gaming, or more likely, I'll use a single 290 for gaming and have the rest working on mining.

Only concern is the performance of the kaveri cpu in games, will having 4 cores instead of 8 be significant in games?

Ohh if you are getting crap mining rates try playing around with the config gpu threads like 1 or 2 and stick intensity at 13. Also on my 7970 vaporx I was getting pretty crappy rates at like 550khash i went ahead and flashed it to a 280x bios and it wen to about 660. I have also found through testing that a 1.7 memory to gpu clock is giving the best rates so at 1700 mhz ram and 1000 gpu can get in the 700 range.

So if you card is giving you crap rates there is some play room to get some more out of your cards. And if you already have the cards by all means use them, I was just saying if you are buying outright. Also with the 290's there is a potential to unlock to a 290x and make sure to take a look at the tomshardware article about the crappy thermal paste they put on these and maybe invest in some better paste.

I am very curious about the kaveri chips, as if they are close to a 7790 and you can oc the gpu you might see some bigger gains as you get the higher memory so maybe some good rates there.

Any guide you can recommend to a n00b who has 2x 6950's idle during the day? Been reading and reading about exchanges, pools, moving files to prevent bitcoin virus attacks has been making my head hurt. Also everyone seems to be off of bitcoin and onto litecoin now?

Everyone without ASICs is off of mining Bitcoins, although I am sure people are still investing in them. I am in the same boat as you regarding my head hurting from all the reading.

If you just want to get something running with Windows while you research pools/other alt coins take a look at https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=7722.0 Not saying thats the best pool or setup because frankly I don't know enough yet but at least it should get you rolling while you figure something else out.

Thanks, yeah, like many people, I looked at bitcoin, seemed like folding but odd so I didn't pursue it at the time but been hearing good thing about litecoin and figured it I could pay for a video card might as well try! :)

Honestly don't spend much time finding a pool. Find a reliable one and stick with it.

So I should leave my 2 290x cards running a litecoin miner to heat the house while I'm at work?

IMO, if you're going to mine an alt currency, just mine at one that switches to most profitable coins. I've been using middlecoin for about 2 months.

Interesting, I'll look into that, thanks!

They seem the best for making a pretty consistent amount of money, but they will never be able to give you that huge payout like with people who mined bit coins years ago when they were obscure/low value. Just something to keep in mind ;)

All these alt coins remind me of a long time ago when there was no standard currency between states and it was a pain. I foresee some of these alt coins dying over time.

I have never heard of anyone actually purchasing anything with a cryptocurrency besides silk road. It just seems like people trading bits but in the end nothing is gained in terms of services, physical products, or what have you.

i was under the impression you just converted them to real currency at some point...

Services are being worked to allow megacoins at least operate in retailers. One of the forum mods made a mockup future paper wallet. Its a pretty immature market still
