plot thickens :) DELL 3440x1440 ultra wide 34" 21:9 screen

Interesting. Though 21:9 is a bit problematic in some games so you still might have to have black borders to get 16:9. I wonder how big it is physically compared to the 28" and 31.5" 4K monitors?

Edit: Apparently it would be as high as a 27" 16:9 panel. Could be really nice since it's not as demanding as full 4K and would offer wider fov. I'm afraid though they'll overprice it like the current 2560x1080 models. Why would I buy it for the same price as a full 4K monitor?

This resolution sounds amazing, it would bother me though if i bought the monitor and games did not support it

I am hoping that it has the same vertical height as a 27" 2560x1400. That would make it a perfect companion monitor. Unfortunately, if the following picture is accurate it doesn't appear the have the height. Here is the link where this monitor is being discussed (and displayed).

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic...l-219-monitor-with-a-resolution-of-3440x1440/

Most websites list the monitor coming in around $500. I think that the $500-700 mark is fairly realistic for this display. The 29" 21:9 displays are going down in price which will help accommodate this display.

With anything new that comes out. You have to wait for them to adapt to it and get support rolling out for it. I'm sure it wouldn't take long for them to make a patch for the current games to support it.

If this has decent response time, i'm sold as long as it's under $1k

Just some food for thought using the size information for this display from the following link: http://translate.google.com/transla...o&tl=en&u=http://www.expreview.com/29756.html

View-able Screen Size Comparison
Eizo Foris FG2421 (24" 1920x1080)
Horizontal Screen Size: 52.13cm
Vertical Screen Size: 29.32cm

Viewsonic VP2770 (27" 2560x1440)
Horizontal Screen Size: 56.69cm
Vertical Screen Size: 33.53cm

Dell U3415W
Horizontal Screen Size: 82.00cm
Vertical Screen Size: 34.00cm (rumored) - Unsure if view-able screen /or/ includes bezel

http://www.displaywars.com/34-inch-21x9-vs-27-inch-16x9

Pixel Count Comparison
7680x1440 --> 11,059,200.00 (2560p Eyefinity)
3840x2160 --> 8,294,400.00 (4K Display)
5760x1080 --> 6,220,800.00 (1080p Eyefinity)
3440x1440 --> 4,953,600.00 (34" 21:9)
2560x1440 --> 3,686,400.00 (WQHD)
2560x1080 --> 2,764,800.00 (29" 21:9)
1920x1080 --> 2,073,600.00 (1080p)

I am really hoping that the 34.00cm is viewable screen size because it would be perfect sitting with a 27" WQHD display.

This is actually a real nice resolution and pixel count. High enough resolution to not be annoying like the 1080 vertical 21:9 screens, but at 5 mil pixels not as demanding as a 4K screen so computer requirements will be quite a bit lower.

I'm interested. I bet having a video and a browser window open side-by-side on this would be great.

I wonder how much glow/bleed this will have compared to current 30" monitors...

This looks ideal! I was hoping for a non-TN 30~36" UHD screen at less than 1500 euros. If this ends up being what I expect it to be, it should sell extremely well - it's basically a single screen eyefinity setup.

Here's hoping it's not a bogus rumor and Dell won't price it outside the realm of reason.

This is definitely interesting, but how many games will support this unique res?

I've heard of issues with the 2560x1080 displays not displaying many games properly.

With 21:9, how do movies look (1080p source)? Are there borders on the side?

Depends on the movie.. If it's 16x9 movie it will have black bars on the sides such as 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 ratio's. If the movie is 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 or so it will fill up the screen or have very small black bars top and bottom. Will be great over all for movies.. Out of like 200+ blu-rays I have only maybe 10-15 are 1.78:1 or 1.85:1.

What kind of DPI does that translate to?

I just ran the numbers. It translates to 109.68 pixels per inch. That is on par with current 27" 2560x1440 panels at 108.79 pixels per inch. In essence, the same.

So, if you're familiar with a 27" 2560x1440 screen, just add 440 more columns of pixels to each side and that's your 34" 3440x1440 screen.

What's the deal with the Lenovo ultrabooks with 3200x1800 LCD screens? Samsung and Sharp are making that resolution panels, so will they scale up to make 24"+ monitor panels?

ohmygod, I just bought a 29" today. Noooooooooo. I'll return it tomorrow. I can wait a while for this thing!! It's exactly what I was looking for. I'm only running a single TITAN and it seems a match made in heaven for my gpu.

The chinese website lists the specs as 82cm x 34cm, not 33.35cm. But yea, the DPI should be somewhere in between 106 & 109 depending on how the actual measurements come in. As you mentioned, that is so similar to a 27" WQHD monitor that you won't notice a difference. For me personally, this makes text a bit too small on some websites and requires some adjustment for daily usage. I love the crispness in games though.

Let me calculate that for you.
By the Pythagorean theorem:
a = 21x
b = 9x
c = 34 inches

a^2 + b^2 = c^2 <=> 441x^2 + 81x^2 = 1156 <=> x^2 = 2.21 <=> x = 1.49 so the height is 9x = 13.39 inches roughly for the 34 inch 21:9
and for the 27 inch 16:9:
256x^2 + 81x^2 = 729 <=> x^2 = 2.16 <=> x = 1.47 so the height is 9x = 13.23 inches, or roughly the same. Unless you are in lower than 8ght grade you really have no excuse. Not to mention that there are sites like these http://http://www.displaywars.com/ .
Regarding the display I think you will have to watch it from very far back to see everything (like in a game or movie) and for work you would have to be much closer in order to see the text, not that it would be bad for work - maybe that's its main purpose . Too bad movies don't come in 1440p - they'll probably jump directly to 4K.

Actually, 21:9 is not the correct ratio. It should be 21.33:9 or 64:27. So
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
4096x^2 + 729x^2 = 1156
x^2 = 0.2395...
x ≈ 0.4894...
27x ≈ 13.22 in.
Very close to 13.23 in. height of the 27 in. 2560x1440 monitor.

I too bought the Dell U2913WM last month. I'm pretty happy with it, so I'm going to keep it. (I think I'm past the return window anyway).

As stated in such a polite fashion by our new fellow compatriot lainovlopata, this monitor should make a great partner in crime for those of us with the 27" WQHD displays :)

I am looking forward to testing the waters with this monitor. I wish Surround or Eyefinity supported mixed sizes as that would be fun to play around with as well.

It's great we're now finally seeing 4k monitors trickle into the market, the more the better as it means the prices will get driven down

Yea, that is my hope as well. I don't have a desire to get a 4k display yet because of the GPU power required to run games at decent settings. This display seems like a happy medium, and the availability of 4k displays should hopefully help drive down the price on some of the "lesser" displays. The only concern with this guy is that it is a "niche" monitor so I hope they price it well.

It is niche and has slightly more screen area than a 16:10 30" 2560x1600, and more pixels.

It is hard to see how it won't be priced higher than a 16:10 30".
