Hey All:

I need a few more concurring opinions before I go scurrying off to Frys. I have a Rocketfish 900 watt power supply thats like 5 years old. I just upgraded from an HD 4890 to a HD 7990. 2 6pin PCIE ports to 3 8 pin. Needless to say the PSU didn't have 8 pins so I bought a dual 4 pin MOSFAT (?) to a dual 8 pin power adapter and then fed one 6 pin to the 8 pin (via an adapter) to try and split up the power draw across a couple rails.

Then, when the VC gets under load the computer kills itself. I can run this thing all day long at idle, and its no worries, I put it under loan and it turns itself off immediately.

My gut tells me its a crappy PSU that needs to meet its maker, but I would like an opinion or two before I swap it out.

Thanks!

Def a new PSU. You should not skimp on this item. If you buy a chinsey unit, it will wear down your components over the long haul because of how the voltage is regulated in those shitty units.

I'd buy a new psu before you EVER push that to the point of shutting off again. Enough voltage drop and you could fry the card.

Thanks guys! Bought an Antec 900 watt at Frys and the problem is solved. I'm keeping the Rocketfish lying around as a dedicated video card driver for my next 7990, or maybe a couple 7950s. Litecoin mining is fun.
