DARK SOULS - Amazon $5.99 (12 hours ONLY, STEAM!)

Has GFWL been removed from this?

If not, has there been any indication of when or if it will be removed?

GFWL is dead, steam has converted all their games to not use it.

No, the developers have to do it individually.

Games not converted will be DOA if the product key was bound to your GFWL account (SSA).

is a controller necessary for this? I got demon souls on ps3 that i have yet to finish (i keep dying in that). lol

This game is a super heavy port, you will certainly need a controller. Even Amazon's website recommends it...which is hilarious.

Very tempting. I only have about 120 games I haven't played in my steam account, adding another should be fine.

Tempting, but the notorious difficulty level scares me....

GFWL won't be completely taken down until next summer (July 1st 2014). So you can play all games until then. After that point, is when they will need to be patched over to another solution.

the only issue GFWL live has caused me with Darksouls, is not notifying me of a new version to download---yet refusing to sign me in. So on your end, it looks like the servers are down. But really, you have to manually go to the GFWL site and download the new version. Shouldn't be any problem with that anymore, as presumably MS won't be making any new versions!

i bought it. i was watching all year hoping to see it on sale for $5, but i guess $6 isnt too bad :p
plus you get $5 off in January for a future purchase.

So... what's this game like?
Borderland with guns (aka FPS loot game)?
Or does it have a traditional end (aka kill the boss to finish the game)?

The difficulty is over-hyped.

Bullshit, the game is completely unforgiving. Is it Ninja Gaiden bash your face again the wall repeatedly hard? No, it's "Oh shit I slipped, fell into a coma, died, and they robbed my corpse." hard.

Is this any good?

If you like Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age Origins, and Witcher series, would you recommend this?

Just just got Dark Souls on this offer. I haven't really played it yet. But if it is anything like Demon Souls, it really is not that bad.

If you have raided in an mmo, then you understand how to analyse and determine the mechanics of the game.

It's a bit 'artificially' hard with the way it handles death, but otherwise it's really not all that mechanically hard. You get used to it. The hardest part is probably trying to decide if where you're going is 'correct'. And if you can't handle that, there are plenty of walk throughs.

Yes, a controller is recommended. Port or not, controllers are typically better for these types of games anyway. The biggest problem with the port is the graphics. There are mods to fix it.

I have a xbox 360 controller. I still feel the controls are a little clunky.

I am glad to hear about the graphic mods. I will have to look into that. I fired this game up for a few minutes and was extremely disappointed with the graphics. I didn't expect much. But it was significantly worse than Demon Souls on my PS3. It should at least be on that level.

It's not at all like DAO or the Witcher. There is no dialogue, and not really any story. Combat is the focus, and the combat is much harder either DAO or Witcher 2.

Is this any good?

If there is any game worth GFWL, this one is it. I love, love, love this game. I haven't obsessed about a game in years -- by that I mean play it and play it and go to bed thinking about it. But I obsess about Dark Souls. And I, too, was scared by the alleged difficulty, and the fact that I'm not a young kid and don't have great reflexes. But if you pay attention to your level, and farm and grind just a little bit (which is fun), you'll be fine.

Also, following a game guide -- even if you don't follow it step by step -- removes almost all of the difficulty.

I can't think of a better way to spend $7.

Dark Souls is not hard, it's fair. When you die in Dark Souls, you know exactly why you died. Either you're in an area you shouldn't be in yet, didn't upgrade your gear, or weren't paying attention to what was happening around you.

They'd feel clunky to you on the consoles too, that part is not a consequence of porting but just how the game is designed. You'll get used to it.

The main issue with graphics is that it renders it at the console res by default (something super low) and upscales it. The main purpose of the mod is to natively sample it at your display resolution or even super sample if you wish. There are of course additional options in the mod, but the resolution is the main issue.

Using downsampling, the textures are actually much higher res than the 720p variants.

quoted for truth. It stands in stark contrast to most games now, which practically play themselves for you, literally highlight everything you need to do, and give you tons of regenerating health.

I would stress to anyone that if they choose to use a guide, tread very lightly in that guide. A lot about the souls games is made better due to the mystique and unknown factor.

BTW, DSfix is the name of the main mod for adding graphics and HUD options.

*and your game controller needs to be plugged in before you boot the game, otherwise, the game may not recognize it properly.

In regards to this: Dark Souls is actually a better looking game than Demon's Souls, overall. Even comparing the PS3 versions, where Demon's Souls runs at 720p and Dark Souls is less than 720p. Dark Souls still gets the overall nod in graphics.

Your problem is likely that you are playing Dark Souls on your PC monitor, using the horrible in-game upscaling method, whereas Demon's Souls is on your PS3 via a likely decent HDTV, with decent upscaling.

As has been stated, once you unlock proper resolution options via DSfix, you'll find that the game has pretty good assets built into it, most of which scale with the native resolution. It's only some fairly unimportant textures here and there, that don't have higher res versions. such as some stone steps, some shrubbery, other small things. and those do have texture mods available (if it bothers you), that are injectable via DSfix. Overall though, the art direction in these games is so fantastic, the somewhat dated graphics engines used still manage to impress quite often.

How do I activate this on steam? Tried with the code they gave me, but it seems I can only download throught the amazon software.

I just clicked "add a game" and then "activate a product on steam". I typed the code that amazon gave me, and it worked.

But then I had to link it to GFWL account, which is apparently linked to my xbox live account.
