I finished Killzone yesterday and hated it. The first few missions are fantastic. Starting around Mission 6 it just got dumb. Missions 7 and 8 are among the worst I've ever played. The only reason I finished it was out of spite.
Out of spite towards.. yourself? the console??

Why did you opt to play Ghosts, Rivals and BF4 on XBONE vs. PS4? Just asking since I understood that these games are worse on the box in terms of graphics fidelity. Any thoughts? Here's my summary of the launch games I've played:
PS4
Killzone Shadow Fall - I had never played a Killzone game before this. I thoroughly enjoyed the first few missions. The graphics were amazing and the wide open spaces made game play a lot of fun. I like the OWL companion and the zipline mechanic. The guns felt good and the game was heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, everything went to shit around Mission 6. All of the gorgeous outdoor environments were gone. All that was left was a corridor based space shooter. Mission 7 had a terrible wave after wave survival section. Was absolutely frustrating. Mission 8 had a free fall dodge objects section that you really want to give up on. It seems that a lot of people actually do give up here. If you somehow get lucky and hit a checkpoint midway through it's not as bad. I died 30ish times on this. Mission 9 was better but had repetitive sections of you disabling the same machine over and over. Mission 10 was just garbage.
Injustice - I hadn't played Injustice before this. I did play MK vs DC Universe. I was really looking forward to this game. It seems like they just went absolutely overboard in what they added. The fun of a simple fighting game is gone. The game looks gorgeous but it's just too complicated to enjoy now. The story mode is a lot of fun, though. I wouldn't play it MP but quickly going through the story is OK.
Assassin's Creed IV - I have played through every AC game in the series except for mobile. I'm currently sitting at ~50% sync after 30 hours or so. This game is incredible. My order of preference in the AC series is AC:B > AC4 > AC2 > AC1 > AC:R > AC3. This game is very close to AC:B for best of the series but not quite there. I think that comes to preference, though. My biggest complaint about AC4 is the large separated world. There is fast travel from anywhere to help with that but then you end up spending a lot of time at loading screens. The good thing is, everything loads MUCH faster in AC4 than previous games. The map pulls up almost instantly. That was always a frustrating thing in the past. Combat, both on foot and on ship, feels solid. There are a TON of collectibles. Whether that's good or bad... The in-animus story is good but the out of animus story is junk. That's been the case since AC:R.
Resogun - Made by the Super Stardust HD people. I played quite a bit of that game and have put a couple hours into Resogun. It's solid but not as good as Super Stardust. There aren't any instructions at first. You basically start and just have at it. If you go online you'll get tips and info about what's going on and that helps a lot. I enjoy the game and will continue playing it but wouldn't recommend buying it for retail price. I'm a PS+ member so I got it for free.
Contrast - This game is all about light and shadows. There's a VERY interesting narrative with a little girl. You're her friend on a sort of adventure. You're able to shift to a shadow to climb obstacles. It's actually very good looking and a lot of fun to play. The controls are rather lose and makes some sections frustrating. I'm enjoying the game and plan on finishing it.
Xbox One
Call of Duty: Ghosts - I have played and finished every Call of Duty game before this. I played completely through the campaign on Veteran. It's quite a bit easier than the previous CoD games. There is still some of that "veteran bullshit" where enemies will target you specifically even if your squad mates are out in the open and you're peeking from cover. Overall the game play is the solid classic feel. The story isn't as convoluted as previous games and makes some sense. I enjoyed the campaign and it didn't feel like a shore. Multiplayer is separate between classic MP, Squads and Extinction. I've mainly played Squads. I played with friends against an enemy AI team. It rotates through a variety of game modes that all are quite a bit of fun. I like playing against the AI a lot more than playing against other people. There are a lot of people that are just too good at Call of Duty. It makes playing against people just not a lot of fun. The Squads against AI was engaging and didn't make you feel terrible about not being great at it.
FIFA 14 - I've put about 400 hours into the FIFA series over the past couple years. I love the games and plan on putting 400+ more hours into them. I've been playing FIFA 14 on 360 since launch. The Xbox One version seems almost identical. Graphics are slightly better but not a huge improvement. Lighting seems to be different with the game being a little darker. Using the XO controller take a lot of getting used to. Especially the bumper buttons. A lot of people are reporting that over-powered headers have been nerfed a bit, but I haven't noticed that. I still score on a header off a set piece about 25% of the time. Overall, if you're a soccer fan, I highly recommend picking this up
NBA 2K14 - I played NBA 2K13 and sucked at it. Likewise, I also suck at this one. But the game is gorgeous. It really looks like a regular NBA game on broadcast TV. All the presentation is identical and the announcers are great. I definitely recommend that you play through the tutorial. There's A LOT to the game and that's the best way to pick it all up. Each individual game takes quite awhile to get through. Don't expect to play a game or two in a short period of time. The MyTeam mode is fun and very similar to EA's Ultimate Team mode. You collect cards to upgrade your team by opening packs or trading. I'll be playing quite a bit of this game while snapping my Blazers on live TV.
Need for Speed: Rivals - I haven't played a lot of Need for Speed in the past. Underground and Underground 2 were my favorites. The last racing game I spent a lot of time playing was Forza Horizons. In Rivals you are either a cop or a racer. There's an open world where you except challenges and you're always playing with up to six actual people. You can accept challenges or drive right past them. The graphics look just OK. They're not mind blowing next-gen but they're not bad either. The driving is also just OK. I think Forza Horizons had the perfect feel to it and Rivals just isn't as good. I'll be playing quite a bit more to level up and see how the game goes from there.
Killer Instinct - I played the absolute shit out of KI on SNES. That was my go to game for a long time. This version has brought back quite a few memories. It took to a bit to remember the combo openers/linkers/enders game play. It all came back and I've been having a lot of fun. I haven't played any MP yet. I've just been going through Survival mode with each the characters to get a better feel for them. Jago and Orchid are my favorite so far. I do have to say that once I started playing KI, I have absolutely no desire to go back to Injustice. KI is just a better fighter. My biggest complaints would be load times between fights. It seems to take quite a bit longer than it should. Still, I'm looking forward to season 2 when they release more fighters.
Battlefield 4 - I've played every Battlefield game before this one. Starting with 1942, Vietnam and BF2 on PC. I was a BIG BIG fan of Bad Company. BF3 went backwards from Bad Company in a lot of ways and was disappointing. I've only played through two missions in BF4 and put 6 hours or so into the MP beta. The graphics look amazing. VERY good looking game. The guns feel perfect and the sounds are top notch. It's really satisfying to shoot the guns and kill enemies. My only complaint so far is that the achievement goals they set for each mission make it so you have to play rather awkwardly if you want to unlock them. I want to just ignore them and play how I want to enjoy the game but then I feel like I'd be missing something. One thing I do like is that you get scored on each mission based on how well you do. You can compare your score against all your friends. It makes it a little more "arcadey".
I've played both consoles about the same, my buddy let me play his Xbox One over the weekend extensively so here is my extremely brief review on the games I've played:
PS4 Exclusives:
Knack - Its a fun, kid-friendly platformer that is incredibly simplistic. I didn't spend too much time with the game since I became incredibly bored with it, it was too easy and simplistic for me. That's all I have to really say about it.
5/10

Yea, I think you're full of crap. Knack is definitely simplistic and geared towards kids with it's story and all, however it is most definitely NOT an easy game. It's frustratingly difficult at times. One hit kills when you're fighting 5 or more enemies? Yea, not easy.

^ thanks for the reviews but boy, you have a lot of time to spend on video games (not judging, just slightly jealous!)
I wouldn't say that anymore. Console games now have huge software installs and require you to constantly upgrade your hard drive. You also have no backwards compatibility. Without the "just put the disc in and play" capability, consoles are losing one of the biggest advantages they used to have.
Well for me the PS3 is new console. Haven't used anything playstation in about years until now. I got the Batman Origins and Last of US bundle. My first impression was: Why does it take so stinkin' long to play a game. The thing needs updates for 30 minutes to play anything. This was the reason PC games get tiring to run (especially pre-steam). At the new-gen consoles better/faster about this?
Need some advice: Is it better to set the PS3 to 720p and have my Pioneer plasma upscale to 1080p or use the PS3's upscaling?
Thanks for the advice.
Yeah take The Last of Us for example on the back of the box it says 480p, 720p output. The Batman game is 720p. But lets say you buy FFXIII, GT5, Bayonetta those game do 1080p output. Since you go through a receiver and most PS3 games seem to be 720p you might want to try both settings and see what you can tell or prefer. In Output settings for PS3 I have 480p,720p, 1080p selected. My remote has a "info" button and it tells me FFXIII is indeed outputting 1080p on my TV. So I would venture to say the PS3 automatically detects the highest capable game resolution with that of your TVs highest resolution capable, and runs with that based on output resolutions you check mark in video output settings for the PS3..
