After LG fessed up to data collection on its smart TV’s, the company has announced it will be releasing a firmware update to opt out of the collection of ‘anonymous’ tracking of personal usage.

The Korean company is working on a firmware update that will disable the data transmission when users elect to turn it off.

I'm glad that I grew up before the digital age exploded, some people will live and die never having known a world were the common man's life wasn't digitally extracted and scrutinized by electronic leeches, leaches owned by scum bags in government and private industry who have only their own personal gains at heart.

The digital world is a play ground for fisheads............... to them, the world's population are sheep to be exploited.

can someone help me understand why a private corporation like LG will do something like this - monitoring people's behavior at home? i though the goal of a company is to make profit. so unless they can monetize this data i don't understand why they are collecting it.

^THIS,I'm dumb founded by some people that support their collection and control.

Oh look, another "opt-out" menu item, no one will know about. LG got what it wanted, they're still going to collect all the data they can from uninformed consumers.

We seriously need a consumer protection law that requires "opt-in" on this stuff from the get-go.

You just said it, "is to make profit"

They have ads within the LG Smart TV

Well, personally, I'd rather see ads for things relevant to my interests. I hate commercials primarily because they're essentially a 100% waste of my time due to not having any relevancy in my life.

I fully support no longer being asked if I have trouble getting it up, informed as to Justin Biebers latest release, or continually reminded that a new Call of Duty game was released.

Not that I'm trying to downplay it but isn't this just another Nielsen rating? Proper way is to prompt to enable it from the get go.

Nope, they already earned a five year boycott from me.

Replace 5+min commercials with relevant interest ads that pop in from the side sometimes, hmm...

Cool video thanks for the link

You know what else will stop an LG Smart TV from collecting data? Refusing to buy an LG product.
