Winamp Is Officially Dead

I stopped using Winamp when it started vacuuming up all my memory post v5 release.

Been using Foobar2000 ever since I can remember... never really liked Winamp after it started using lots of RAM, back in the days where people only had 128mb ram on average.

Yeah, Winamp was always "meh" to me, though I guess I didn't catch it in it's very early days. Never used it all that much. When I started using foobar2000 that was revolutionary, because all of a sudden I could play games and listen to music at the same time since it was so light on resources  Fond memories of playing TOCA2 with foobar2000 playing in the background.

Still use foobar2000 to this day. Listening to some CCR on it right now

back in the day it was all about WinAmp and WinMX. I miss those days:(

Ya, those were the days,

Can someone tell me what the 'YOU WA SHOCK !' plugin for Winamp actually does? I can't listen to my music anymore without using this plugin. Perhaps if I could understand what this plugin actually does, I may be able to give foobar2000 another go and try find plugins to make listening to music equally enjoyable.

The site you linked says it's available as a VST plugin, so all you'd need is the VST Wrapper plugin for Foobar to be able to use it. I usually install all VST plugins into a \VST\ folder on my HDD somewhere then point the VST Wrapper to that folder (instructions found on the VST Wrapper download page).

It makes you too lazy to figure out how to setup your EQ properly.

From what I can find, the goodizer basically amounts to presets for the LMH knob in Maximus.

I'm probably wrong, but this really seems analogous to "The Crystallizer" that X-Fi cards have.

Yes, many good memories of 1:1 FTP download sites, early MP3.com and UUNET/DALNET downloads... The Llama shall not die in my household!

Winamp was awesome back in the day. Then, AOL happened. They killed it themselves (like everything they touch). Like ICQ, once they get it, they destroy it. I went to Foobar after Winamp started declining. Still, a damn good music player.

Ok, then it looks like now's a good time to switch to something else.

Is there a program out there that acts like WinAmp that is compatible with OSX (I hate iTunes), Windows, and Linux?

The main thing for me that I liked was the ability to right click on the Audio folder on my NAS and choose "Enqueue in Winamp". Never had to bother with play lists, just found the folder I wanted to listen to, and drag and drop it.

Fond memories from when I used to buy CD's based on music I downloaded off the web. Nowadays I buy nothing and stream everything legally for free in protest of the RIAA.

R.I.P. Winamp! There was a lot of llama ass kicking back in the day!

Ah, good ole WinAmp. Used it every day for 10 years straight starting in '98. Nowadays I just use Amazon Cloud Player.

Oh, WinMX. Thank you for exposing me to the most disturbing illegal content on the internet during my fledgling years, and teaching me that file names can conceal the kind of crap that makes me fear that the cops will be coming to my house soon. You broke me on the web hard and fast, and the scars remain to this day.

The mid to late 90's internet felt like an adventure to me when I was a kid, with my 14.4k modem and me being a pirate monkey with napster.

Winamp is still the best shoutcast client. I stream DI and SKY.fm premium from it. Sad.

They should open source that thing.

Man, I haven't used Winamp in years, but back in the day I loved it. I enjoyed Media monkey for a bit too.

Now I just use the default media player..... Seems less rebellious I guess

Saw the "web services" bit I guess that means shoutcast is gone. Discovered so much new music and music genres browsing shoutcast stations. :-(

Until recently Winamp 2.something was in my "Software to install after a Fresh Win Install" folder.

Definitely brings back memories. My desktop used to consist of this and Napster.

RIP WinAmp!

Winamp was the program i installed after every fresh windows install.
What's a good replacement?

What is stopping you from still doing that?

Just download the latest release before the site goes down, or use whatever existing installer you have and keep using that, just because it is not going to be around any longer does not mean you cannot still use it.

But if you read the thread you will see mentioned what other people use.

Really not touched it since I switch to Linux on my productivity PC. There ton of nifty media players for linux and about every distro includes a very good one.
But I then THE cross platform media player that dominates now is VLC. That is the best one-size-fits-all player I know of.

My friends grew up with Justin Frankel, one of the original creators of winamp. If you look at the early shareware versions, the address listed on Coffee Pot Rd in Sedona was his dad's house.

I know he made it big when AOL bought them, and I hope he cashed out his stock before AOL/TW tanked. I wonder what he and Tom Pepper are up to now?

Reminds of the good old days. Coming home from middle school and illegally downloading songs off Napster that I just heard off a friend's "40 anti-skip" CD player. And Winamp was the go to player. That was like... 13 years ago. Nostalgia = sadness. I grew up too fast. :(

Holy shit this is terrible news, I've used winamp forever,I'll continue using the latest and greatest version til I rot.

Whatever, got rid of winamp a long time ago for mediamonkey and never looked back. MM even supports winamp plugins

Damn, that brings back memories. Can't remember when I left Winamp behind, these days I'm a bit of a Foobar fan :p

Please tell me how you did this. I'd really appreciate it.

And there is the problem with Foobar. All the fancy screen shots in the world and it doesn't look anything like that when you download and install it. In this case the designers made almost ZERO UI decisions for the users. Designing software is about making some decisions. It's too flexible and looks incredibly dull by default. Non of the UI plug-in / lib version work on the latest, version and you have to slowly figure out what is compatible with what.

My other alternative suggestion in lieu of iTunes would be JRiver, but it is a paid product. If you use it a lot I think it may be worth it though as it is a good media server.

I stopped using Winamp years ago but for the life of me I can't remember why. Some compatibility issue or missing feature I suppose. I just remember having to look for something else. I switched to foobar 2000 and have been using that for many many years without a problem so I guess I won't miss Winamp.

huh, I thought they discontinued that crap player like 8 or 9 years ago. When did they bring that zombie back?

foobar2000 is all one really needs

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
The best music player ever, still! Never bloated, supports every codec known to man, and come with Milkdrop....... WHHHHYYYYYYY!?!?!?!?

I will backup the final download and continue to use it.
Winamp is always one of the first things I install on any new machine. This is soooo sad....

Good bye, old friend...

Holy shit, do you know what that is a reference of?
You WA Shock? It's the opening theme of an OLD anime called Fist of the North Star, Hokuto no Ken. 1983 or something. lol

Yup, still using WinAMP to this day. I've yet to find an alternative that's more functional or convenient for me. I actually like keeping my video and music players separate, so I use MPC for videos and winAMP for MP3s.

I had no idea that AOL had bought them out, I guess that would explain why the site and newer releases had gone down hill the past years.

Nonetheless, I just bought Valleyheart and MMLP2 from amazon, then loaded up the songs in winAMP to listen to them. Custom skins, Milkdrop 2.0, plug-ins, great sound, and familiarity are all reasons I've no particular desire to switch to a new solution.

The only thing they are doing that is actually hurting WinAMPs legacy is taking down the website. It should be left up forever.

I still have it running on an old machine. Otherwise, I've moved on to foobar2000, but I still can't completely give up on Winamp. It does exactly what I need it to and I haven't found a compact interface that just works as well for the basics.

Gonna save some of the installers for old times sake.
