Hi folks,

Thought I would asked those of greater wisdom as to what my next steps should be?

I have purchased a CPU + Motherboard (LGA775) + RAM (DDR2) from eBay. I wanted to play around with linux on this system.

Here is the issue: Power system on, Fans turn on and 2 to 3 seconds after power on the CPU LED light turns on and the system powers off. If I try to power on again, the CPU LED turns on immediately and the system powers down about 1 to 2 seconds after that.

Here is what I have tried:
  • Removed the RAM - CPU LED and VR LED came on
  • Tried another set of RAM - Same Result
  • Removed the HSF and re-seated the CPU - Same result
  • Removed the CMOS Battery for 20 minutes, tried again - Same Result
  • Tried a single stick of each ram set (1 GB, 2 GB sticks) - Same result
  • Examined very carefully and thoroughly the CPU and socket pins... nothing abnormal that I can see.

In all noted above I ensured only the PowerOn Connectors, the EPS and Mbr Power connections were connected.

System:
Intel D975XBX2 Motherboard
2 GB of DDR2 Ram (also have 2 different sets of 4 GB (2x2) Corsair XMS2 DDR2)
Pentium D Socket 775 940 Processor
eVGA 750W PSU (yes I know this is overkill but it was only $30.00 - brand new & NOT from eBay)

Any thoughts, or comments appreciated. My thought is something happened to the motherboard in transport?

No, I guess it can't hurt. Thinking it may be a short causing this through some contact point on the case?

happens more than you think

hit the power on pins with a paperclip or something in a bare minimum configuration and report back

Thanks. I pulled it out. Still didn't boot. Was about to pull the CPU out and try to boot when I notice that even for 2 to 3 seconds the CPU was extremely hot to the touch. I found a space Arctic Cooler for LGA775 installed it... and voila it booted!

Now I have a new issue, despite the Bios settings I can not get the system to boot from a USB drive/stick. I hooked up a USB keyboard and there is power to the USB (numlock light is on for the keyboard).

I also noticed under the bios that the H/W Monitor stated the CPU Temp = 80 degrees. ??

Hope someone else chimes in here

one thing I have noticed on older boards, they may see the usb stick as an HDD, I have banged my head against trying to boot from all the "USB" options and then found the stick in the available "HDD" options

probably not it but all I have to offer off the top of my head aside from google your ass off

Haha, thanks. Yeah, I am in that exact position. Googling and trying every option in the Bios. :-( At least I can use my USB keyboard and Mouse now.

I have the same issue. Except with a asus rampage extreme. I concluded the CPU was dead. Gonna find out if I was right tomorrow.

Good luck, let me know how it goes.

Mine has resolved, but the CPU temp hovers around 84c which is extremely high. I have tried 3 different CPU Coolers (Intel Stock, Zalman, and Arctic cooling 11 plus) and the CPU still runs extremely warm.

64 to 84 c. At least it boots.

Problem now is NO 64 bit Linus OS will install. 32 bit, not problem, 64 bit gives an error message about drive failure and drive being old. Strange message which I have searched throughout Google with not success to solve it. Tried Debian and Ubuntu distros with no sucess. 32 bit Ubuntu is running at the moment with no issues.
