NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Yeah, I emailed Demciflex the other day, still waiting back for a response. Hopefully we can get a custom order page for you guys to use.

yes that would be good, although finding info like that in this thread is getting harder, i saw this comment whilst looking back for some other info, there's that many pages being generated now with all the activity !!

btw, looks like i never got any email to warn of shipping and thus to expect delivery - today was a nice surprise :)

Got my CD drive today. Time to borrow the SSD out of my old PC, measure, cut and sleeve the SATA power and data cables.

The custom fees for you guys in Europe are a bit harsh, yeeze!

It's mostly sales tax (or value added tax). We pay this on almost everything. 15%-27% depending on country. The import duty itself is quite low, like 2-3%.

I believe the 13 GBP handling fee the UK guys are quoting is not usual for other European countries.

Welp, just having a quick read through of the customs fees and what not, I don't think we have to pay anything at all. Not anything for computer related stuff at the very least. GST still applies for anything more than $1,000 though.

.....and ya'll have REAL heath care!

Hey WiSK, are we going to get a side-by-side comparison of the NCASE M1 with your Compact Splash? I actually wanted to get that case before even finding out about the M1.

If you told Americans that they would have to give as much as half of their pay checks to the Govt, like some European countries do, we would have all kinds of uprisings going on. But I'm off topic here. Back to our regularly scheduled giddy talk of NCASE M1. :D

Sure :)

Just realised I have put Compact Splash in my sig already, but it's actually still in pieces in Oregon. SLE just received the latest production batch back from the powdercoaters and he and his wife are assembling them all in their dining room. I'm surprised that the M1 will get here before the Splash since that was ordered in March, but all the drama with the original fabricator put a big slowdown on the project.

While waiting for my case to arrive, I made this custom carry bag.

Come to me, my M1. You have a home ready.

Thats and AWESOME BAG! Just the thing I was planning to make at some stage, but you are too efficient!

Hi everyone!

Been following this thread for a log time, but just registered.

Received my case two days ago. Had high expectations on this one and boy did it exceed them!
Great job to all involved! And for you who haven't received yours yet, its well wort the wait. Good times is coming... :)

We already pay more in taxes for our health care than most single-payer countries. The difference is we ALSO pay about the same amount out-of-pocket.

While waiting for my case to arrive, I made this custom carry bag. This is a well-padded soft shell that will protect my M1 from weather and scratches, but not large falling rocks. Large exterior pockets for peripherals and whatnots. End result is actually a little smaller than my current laptop bag and much lighter.
New bag: 13.5 oz
Old bag: 120 oz (7.5 lbs!)

Is that bag for sale? :D

Hey guys talking about politics: stick to the topic or get moderated. Your choice.

It looks like the 'trick' to put $90 value has worked for people in many countries, but for PiT in Slovakia and for some of us now in the Netherlands the customs wants to see proof of payment. This means that the tax will be levied over the whole $245 because this value is higher than the 150 euro small import limit. :(

That's a question for the lawmakers at the European Union. For goods under 150 euro, only the goods are taxed, for goods over 150 euro, the whole service is taxed including shipping, handling, insurance and what have you.

I didn't get my NCase yet, but iSP who lives near me got a letter from customs this morning. I hope still that some of us will slip through the net.

oh yeah got my customs slip this morning cost me £31.24 they say delivery tomorrow... better come tomorrow (although i dont even have anything to build yet but meh just need my little m1 to be safe and sound with me)

I didnt have to pay anything in customs, it was shipped as a value of 90 USD which made it pass through i think :) - Thanks.

MAAAAN you so lucky! ah well i guess im just happy my case is on its way to me tomorrow.. :D

awesome ...Now who makes a indiegogo/kickstarter for a M1 carrying bag :D
Is that bag for sale? :D

Thanks for the kind words, all. I haven’t any notion how to get bags produced in quantity, but I’m glad to provide design/construction information to interested folks.

Very nice! Where and when did you learn to sew bags? How thick is the cloth and where did you get the handle?

Just another sewing hobbyist, so I made it up to suit myself. I’m into ultralight gear and I’m also a little nervous about static electricity, so I chose lightweight and mostly static neutral materials that I hoped would pair safely with an aluminum case. Here’s what I really like about the design: The entire weight of the computer is carried by the Gear Grip. The handle slides through a hole in the top of the bag. The bag only bears the weight of the peripherals. The gear grip should also make lifting the computer into and out of the bag an easy one-handed process.
Lining: 100% cotton, static neutral
Padding: 4 layers of ¼ inch thick lightweight cotton batting, static neutral
Rigid layer: um, blush… I used file folder paper - it’s cheap, light, nearly static neutral, easy to cut to shape, and works.
Exterior: Waterproof “cotton-feel” Nylon - Not static neutral, but ultralight, very strong/durable/functional and looks good.

Still think you should stitch the NCASE logo somewhere on the bag, you know, so somebody doesn't try to stuff a Shuttle in it or something, lol. Necere, do you happen to have a photo or template of the NCASE logo to post, in case she wants to sew something like that on her bag?? Might also be handy for anyone wanting to do a vinyl applique on the case.

:D Please, thank you. Assuming Necere and Waha don’t mind. Still unsure how I'd do it. I don't embroider. But could be a fun puzzle.

Hello guys :)
I'm in the process of ordering watercooling parts for my M1 build (watercooling noob) and am currently considering going with an R9 290. Would the Swiftech H220 be adequate enough to cool it? I am most likely going to be overclocking it.
Thanks in advance

I wouldn't advise to go for an 290 (or X), much less if you plan to overclock it. Why?

This is the total power consumption for the whole system, a system that is actually more power hungry than any we will put into a mITX system (Because there is no LGA2011 love for us ).

BUT, the thing to note with Volcanic Islands cards is that...

a) They all throttle with their stock heatsink, unless you run it really really loud.
b) The charts show no overclock.

So, once you remove that limiting factor, which is the temperature, via a decent cooler... the power consumption will increase. Even more so if you plan to overclock.

All in all, the 290s are far too power hungry to be deemed "good" for a 450W psu. If you are not into overclock... then, maybe, but still, the cards are far too loud for me to be any good at all in such a small enclosure.

To each his own, though.

Yeah ... I think a Titan is the max tolerable with a 450Watt PSU.

Though those benchmarks are normaly run with high TDP LGA2011 platforms and are measured at the wall (not taking in account psu efficency).

I'd say it is possible with the SS ST45SF, but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Yeah was bummed on how power hungry, hot and loud the R9 290/X are. That $400 price point for a potential-Titan-killer (R9 290) just makes it much more heart breaking :(

Oh well, probably will pick up a GTX 780 once the GTX 780 Ti is released. I'll predict there will be plenty of them for sale for cheap in a week or two :p

anyone have ETA on the fronzen Q rez ?

I thought it was shipping early Nov.

thanks

Guess I will be the only one with r9-290 looking at the database

Titan is dead, 780Ti it is.
And a 780Ti whips the floor with R9s ;)

If you want R9 290(x) performance get a 780 and oc it a little bit.

Silver NCASE M1 #852 arrived safe and sound this morning. It looks even better in the flesh. Easily one of the best looking PC cases I have seen in my 20-something years of computing and computers as a hobby.

So kudos to Necere and Wahaha360 - this project has been an absolute triumph so far. And kudos to everyone on this forum. Friendliness, knowledge, and just a general willingness to help with even the most trivial of things make it a pleasure to be a part of.

Well yeah I'm leaning towards a GTX 780. I'm temped by the prospect of having a fully unleashed GK110 in my NCASE M1, but I think it would put undue pressure on the SS ST45SF.

I haven't decided on mine yet. 90% sure I am getting a 290 at this point but I have 3-4 major obstacles. 1.) Do I use it in the M1. I have a 3930k 32GB machine with a 7950, a 290 would be a sizable upgrade and would get used more, but I wanted to limit reused equipment in the M1. 2. Will my 7950 fit in the M1. The 7950 I am using is a dual fan Sapphire that is on the reference board which is about 5 inches longer than it needs to be (7950 Reference is longer than 7970 reference.). 3.Will power be a concern. I don't think it will be and the 7950 isn't going to be a whole lot better. But I also don't want to keep the PSU at 90% it's whole life. 4. When will the non ref stuff come out and what will it look like. If there is a decent 2 fan dual slot card like my Sapphire and I feel like I can get storage I want into the M1, the more likely I will get one.

Thing is, they're taxing a charge which has already had tax paid on it.

Then again, the whole process is a blatant money grab. I've just had my letter through asking for £33.39 and I'm really tempted to phone Parcelforce and harass them until they explain how what they've done has warranted £13.50.

Stupid thieves, punch them in the ovaries, nuke them from orbit, nerve gas the nest, etc.
