My current rig is an dual 4-core AMD 2347HE opteron rig/12GBs of RAM/Supermicro mobo in a nice Lian-li. It's about 6 or 7 years old. I was planning on doing things with it, but it never saw true usage. I will need to ship it to New York to California. I'll still want a good graphics/cad/computer cluster workstation, but it is like $50-$80 to ship.

However I do have some decently nice money to put towarss a new one. I like the low power of the newer processors, and haven't gotten a current tech rig since my laptop 4 years back. I don't game, i just need that level of capability.

Should i say it is time to move on or should i just box and ship it?

Thanks

Hi GenesisFactor,

Seeing that is 6 to 7 years old and you haven't really used it, I suggest moving on to a new computer system. I'm pretty sure you can find lots of new, higher performing components today to build one that can do a lot more than your current system; from new APUs, like the A10-6800, to the up and coming R9 and R7 GPUs.

Both! Ship the thing, build a new tower and re-purpose the old machine. (old machines make great NAS devices and such)
given that's got a server CPU with virtuilization tech and plenty of RAM it would make a good Virtual Machine box for mucking around with. (ESXi maybe?)

If you really like the case, I would just do a new build in that one. Modern day hardware is getting both more powerful and much more efficient (I imagine that rig uses quite a bit of power).

I chose to ship it, but it's really both. I'm sure you'll find a use for the hard ware, and even if you didn't I love the old Lian-Li cases. You could probably repurpose that and save on buying a new case. And if it is a Lian-Li v-series... I love those things even moreso.

I say move on and build something up to date that'll last another 6-7 years!

I don't quite understand the scenario. Are you moving from NY to CA, but not able to bring the computer with you and that's why you need to ship it?

The "shipping" need has nothing to do with selling it right?

As an update, i've decided to do both, as many commented :). I guess it would be nice to start to play with some visualization or have a small HPC with some older fermi teslas.

Thanks so much guys for youropinions.

@ westrock2000: i moved from NY to CA. A kind friend gave me a couch until i got a place closer to work. I couldn't take much more that clothes and a few necessities with me. No, i would sell it form NY, but it was purchased fora sum and never really utilized, which is why i don't want to really get rid of it just yet.

@ tesla it IS a V series ;). I also have a black A05 NIB that i'm thinking about shipping over as i never did get to use it. Ah, unrealized plans...
