its a very small machine meant to be totally quiet and decently powerful and reasonably upgradeable.

they have the same size power jack as intel used on this motherboard. ironically dell is the compatible power supply.

i have the CPU and RAM on there now, its a 3rd gen low power i5 and 8GB laptop RAM. i can put 2 mini PCIe cards on the board, still fit., probably a wifi card at least.

yeah there is a mistake, i had to invert the board dimensions and got a little mixed up,
re drilled and tapped. made the "puck" from 1.5" aluminumon my lathe, it could easilly be bought from a metal supplier (1/2 inch will do, if you use 20mm standoffs)

works better then intel supplied "tiny HSF" so far and not even vertical and using convection.

First part test print, I need to make some changes.

Those are stainless bicycle spokes, which I happen to have a few boxes of, I just thought of using them this morning. The other parts will be able to mount on spokes which will run crom corner to corner. there will also be a piece for the power and reset buttons and LEDs, as well as a rear "I/O plate" which surrounds the ports. maybe a name plate as well.

Very very sexy! and a great use for 3d printing :D I really like how the bike spokes are looking :)
 
AAAND the replicator died.

there is a problem with the wire powering the heated build platform(burned connector), I already emailed and makerbot guy told me they redesigned it and will send me out a new one. if their service is as good as their support i ought to be back in business soon.
 
that particular one was, but they only made 50 of them. it was bit more than decent 240GB MLC. like a neutronGTX or so.

Update: non "limited" version of this drive, which appears to be exactly the same is now avaliable outside of taiwan on amazon.

this gap is where the power switch and LEDs will be mounted on another printed part, also an "I/O shield" is going to fill the spaces over the connectors.

back together for now, I recessed the button to help prevent accidental press from moving it on to a wire or something..

and some test results. look at that SSD go!

This is with fresh paste,a later test was about 2c less, but im thinking i ought to make a copper and bigger puck, the heatsink hets pretty hot after a long burn test, but i want it to get hotter, hotter means the cpu is cooling better. also i notice the z77 chip gets a bit hot, i might use the aluminum puck on it to the heatsink as well.

unfortunately i cant take a picture of the heatsink with my FLIR camera because it is reflective to IR, and just see ambient on it.

its only intel 4000 graphics, so i didnt do any big tests, but everything seems good so far, under normal use. i will replace "little heavy" with this very soon.

This is awesome. It also makes me want a 3D printer even more than I already did.
 
The passive cooling + SSD is fantastic, I imagine it would feel very strange to turn on a computer and hear absolutely nothing.
 
This is the coolest computer build I've seen all week. Amazing. I want it.
 
Best passive cooling evar! Love your build... makes me want to raid the garage for spare parts to make something out of. Simple = beautiful.
 
IMO this is beautiful art and high skill, but less a practical computer because the heat sink is so ridiculously oversized :) really beautiful concept and execution however, including the printed parts!
 
That SSD wasn't only made in 50 quantitity. You really don't have an idea what you bought.

It's called the SuperSSpeed S301, a Chinese SSD. Chris Ramseyer the Tweaktown SSD reviewer went to Asia, found it out and ordered 50 drives to SHILL with his name on...

you can get the regular S301 for $250. The Ramsayer sig. edit. (yours) cost $270. A good $20 for the signature of Tweaktown's SSD reviewer on the drive...

and it's not all that great of a drive. Sure, it does indeed beat it all when it comes to 4K WRITES and some reads. But in just about anything else, it gets beaten by the 840 Pro. Not to mention that it's terrible price/performance.

You just got ripped off on the SLC name. It's a cheap SSD with SLC slapped on to sell to the misguided, no offense but that is what it is.
 
Yes I found that out later, it is avaliable on amazon.

It is fast enough though and SLC. And I got it for $250.

I just got tired of (mostly OCZ) drives dying on me all the time and figure that if this lasts twice as long, then It hasn't made much difference overall.
 
Think this has to be one of my favorite builds in a long time.... I want a silent computer :(
 
That, Sir, is a beautiful build. Small, fairly compact and speedy. I really like the fact that you actually made a few of the parts for the build. Nice job! :)

I replaced the puck with a copper one a while ago, here is the update. much cooler and faster as well. it must have been throttling.
