There have been an abundance of articles on the problems Windows 8.1 is having right out of the gate, but that is to be expected with just about any new operating system rollout. Here is an article that gives you ten good reasons to install 8.1. See if you agree.

For users on previous versions of Windows who skipped Windows 8, the updated OS deserves a look. Many of the promises Microsoft began to deliver on with Windows 8 (cloud integration, for example) are fully realized in Windows 8.1.

Top reasons not to install,

1)Metro
2)No Aero-Glass
3)Having to buy a $100~ OS license when Microsoft sold them to anyone for $20 just 6 months ago.

When a Facebook application is one of the top perks of a new OS, that's a pretty good sign that the OS is a pile of shit.

Reasons not to "upgrade":

1. Media Center not included. Why buy a license that doesn't include the software I want. More importantly, why buy a new license when the one I alread have has the software I want.
2. Metro

Imagine my surprise when Win8.1 Pro would not play a DVD ...

Huh? My WIn7 Pro does ...

Or did I screw something up?

Note: If you bought the Win8 Upgrade, then buy Media Center ($10), it might not authorize. The reason I was given was that unless it was a OEM seat, the Media Center authorization will freak out.

They want more $$$ for the decoder.
You can use VLC player though...and it is free.

megaupload should of taught people cloud storage is dangerous. screw the cloud.

If this is your buggiest reason for a os upgrade. You should actually get out the house and be sociable. You have far more issues in your life if this is your #1 thing in life. Never used facebook and never will. I put facebook down there with the verify code image on websites now. Both are dumb as hell to begin with.

10. The Only Way to Get the Facebook App

What really chaffs my hide, is the PRO edition.

WTF? Cooking? Sports? Weather? Travel? Etc?

What a Pro Edition should entail:

No automagic installs. You pick what goes on the platform.

Superior system tools. Drive Cloning Backups. Advanced partition tools.

Boot to DOS.

Stripper Config. The ability to make the smallest footprint possible.

Debug.

...

Basically, a version for Work platforms. No fluff.

I know this argument has been done to death, but, I dont understand why so many people hate windows 8 or 8.1 . I just upgraded some work machines from windows XP to WIndows 8.1. Sure the users were stumbling around for a bit, but after sitting down with them for about 20 minutes each they started to get a handle on it. They even started bragging, to the other users who hadn't been upgraded, about how nice windows 8.1 is.

The new start button is GREAT. The old start button was way outdated.

The new search in 8.1 is awesome.

My PC is not a "device", like some shitty tablet. It is a computer, it has a hard drive, and my data is mine, not the NSA's, not Microsoft's, and not "the cloud's". Windows 7 is the last power-user's Windows OS that will likely ever be made.

Top 10 Reasons NOT to upgrade.

1. Its Windows 8
2. -
3. -
4. -
5. -
6. -
7. -
8. -
9. -
10. All the above.

its all made for the touch screen user interface operating systems. that's why it runs "apps."

MS has been trailing in the tablet market, and now it's pising off the OS customers as well?

Needless to say, this is the beginning of the end for MS.

and for some reason im really excited about upgrading to 8.1 hated the 8 interface but now that its, what I call it, window 7-a-rised its gonna be good.

Upgraded from Windows 7 to 8.1, and disabled metro instantly and enabled the apps menu on the start button. I couldn't be happier! All the behind the scene enhancements and optimization for newer tech, without the fugly tablet metro ui!

I dont want to come off full of "8 hate" but Im having a hard time figuring out which of these 10 reasons are something that Win7 doesnt have or are worth a damn.

1- Takes up less space. Well thats fine and all but unless youre rolling an 80GB hard drive, Win7 is hardly getting in the way. Since pretty much everybody is using 1TB or bigger now, I dont see this as a perk at all.

2- Supercharged Search? I can hit the Start button on Win7 and type in anything I want and it finds it usually before I finish typing out the word. How is this something new?

3- Better Multitasking? I can use multiple apps at the same time. Thats gotta be talking about tablets right? I can have a billion things open at the same time in Win7.

4- Live tiles. Eeyuck. No thanks.

5- Automatic app updates. Hell Ive got that on my Galaxy Note 2. Dont see why thats a big deal.

6- Start screen can share wallpaper. Ummm....so?

7- Dynamic lock screen. See #6.

8- Better multi-monitor support. OK, that might be something useful. Ill give them that.

9- Skydrive. Ill pass on that. Im not big into the cloud but some may be and that may be useful to them.

10- Facebook app. Ill let Picard and Riker take this one:

So again, not bashing Win8, but I dont get why any of those are reasons to "uprgade" from Win7 at all.

8.1 thus far is meh for me.

At first after upgrading and cleaning up the drive I went from 20gb to 15.2gb but quickly grown to 17gb on its own (system restore save).

Annoying that I had to uninstall all the apps when 8 was installed and had to do it again when 8.1 upgrade. Promptly re-disabled Windows Store after upgrade.

Hopefully DX11.2 will actually get some use as it was the only real reason I made the switch. Still holding out for maxwell gpu's before upgrading though.

1. It Takes Up Less Space - Is this a concern on the desktop? I doubt anyone is that worried about a couple hundred megs anymore. I'm sure it matters on a Win8 tablet, but then you'd upgrade anyway.

2. Supercharged Search - Windows 7 Search bar for stuff on my computer and Google for internet.

3. Better Multi-Tasking - Windows 7?

4. All Live Tiles, Great and Small - Multiple icon sizes should have been in from the start as well as the ability to put them in folders.

5. Automatic App Updates - How long have iOS and Android been doing this and MS couldn't have it from the start?

6. Start Screen Can Share Desktop Background - Really scraping the bottom of the barrel for a top 10 list.

7. Dynamic Lock Screen - If you're on a tablet seems like a good improvement.

8. Improved Multi-Monitor Support - Not sure how many people are going to be running multi-monitors on a tablet, but nice to have if you need it, I guess.

9. Deeper SkyDrive Integration - Keeping original files in the cloud is a terribly, horribly, comically, bad idea.

10. The Only Way to Get the Facebook App - Not a selling point for me, but can't you just use Facebook normally without the app?

The article really seems geared to people running 8 on a tablet, in which case you would upgrade to 8.1 anyway. Don't really see anything that would make me switch from 7.

This is funny stuff. Lets see here...

#1 It Takes Up Less Space

So does Linux. In fact most linux distros use less space then Windows XP.

#2 Supercharged Search

Seriously, I care

#3 Better Multi-Tasking

Better then Windows 8, but not better then Windows 7.

#4 All Live Tiles, Great and Small

I don't see this as a plus, since I'll never use Metro UI.

#5 Automatic App Updates

A feature Linux, iOS, and Android has had forever. Also this only effects apps from the app store, which means Metro only. Nearly useless.

#6 Start Screen Can Share Desktop Background

OMG REALLY? Like I care.

#7 Dynamic Lock Screen

Also don't care.

#8 Improved Multi-Monitor Support

Tablet feature. Also don't care.

#9 Deeper SkyDrive Integration

Cloud computer and NSA. No thanks.

#10 The Only Way to Get the Facebook App

Are we listing reasons not to get 8.1 or to get it? I'm lost here.

I know this argument has been done to death, but, I dont understand why so many people hate windows 8 or 8.1

Most people who hate it are sheep that never tried it. I'm not saying everyone should upgrade from Windows 7 but if you're building or buying a new PC/Laptop there's no reason to go with W7. If you can't configure the Start Screen the way you like you can always get the free program Classic Shell.

I'm not saying everyone should upgrade from Windows 7 but if you're building or buying a new PC/Laptop there's no reason to go with W7.

Let's say I was building a new HTPC. Windows 7 includes Media center. Windows 8 doesn't. Considering the fact that WMC is required for a cable card tuner to work, why should I pay extra for something I can get for free with W7?

1- Takes up less space. Well thats fine and all but unless youre rolling an 80GB hard drive, Win7 is hardly getting in the way. Since pretty much everybody is using 1TB or bigger now, I dont see this as a perk at all.

This is actually important in resource constrained devices that have only 32 or 64 GB of storage like tablets.

2- Supercharged Search? I can hit the Start button on Win7 and type in anything I want and it finds it usually before I finish typing out the word. How is this something new?

This is referring to the integrated web search which isn't in 7. I know a lot of Windows 8 opponents don't like it but a lot of others do.

3- Better Multitasking? I can use multiple apps at the same time. Thats gotta be talking about tablets right? I can have a billion things open at the same time in Win7.

Better multitasking for modern apps, the desktop metaphor remains as it has for 20 years.

4- Live tiles. Eeyuck. No thanks.

It is nice dashboard notification system.

5- Automatic app updates. Hell Ive got that on my Galaxy Note 2. Dont see why thats a big deal.

Other OSes have it but it wasn't in 8.

6- Start screen can share wallpaper. Ummm....so?

A number of people have commented how this makes the Start Screen less jarring.

7- Dynamic lock screen. See #6.

This is actually kind of cool, particularly with multiple monitors.

8- Better multi-monitor support. OK, that might be something useful. Ill give them that.

There is a pretty good amount of consensus on this one and indeed I think is pretty good reason to go to 8.1 even for desktop only users.

9- Skydrive. Ill pass on that. Im not big into the cloud but some may be and that may be useful to them.

Again, the integration of the cloud does get a lot of negative reaction from many 8 opponents, however cloud integration is at the heart of phones and tablets and average people can't seem to get enough of it.

10- Facebook app. Ill let Picard and Riker take this one:

And again, just another way in how different people look at computing. Apps like this are important to the future of Windows if it is to remain a relevant consumer platform.

Out of 10 reasons why I should upgrade, 8 of them don't have any appeal to me.

Try again Microsoft.

1- Takes up less space. Well thats fine and all but unless youre rolling an 80GB hard drive, Win7 is hardly getting in the way. Since pretty much everybody is using 1TB or bigger now, I dont see this as a perk at all.

I dunno, I use a 128GB SSD in my desktop. In fact, doesn't the Surface 2 Pro come with a 64 gig option? Seems like space is important for those people.

Reasons not to "upgrade":

1. Media Center not included. Why buy a license that doesn't include the software I want. More importantly, why buy a new license when the one I alread have has the software I want.
2. Metro

Really? I installed the Windows 8.1 upgrade and, *GASP* *SHOCK* it has the Windows Media Center I already have. I upgraded from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center.

MS has been trailing in the tablet market, and now it's pising off the OS customers as well?

Needless to say, this is the beginning of the end for MS.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....... breath......hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. :D This no where near the beginning of the end for Microsoft or the end at all. Amazing how many of you think your business experts but, oddly, you are not Billionaires? I wonder why? Maybe you are not as smart as you think you are?

For those of us who got Win8 for $15, it's awesome. If I had to pay full retail now, I'll be pretty down on it also.

this is the first Windows OS I have not upgraded to ever...that says a lot...I tried the release candidates...liked some things but I can't get used to not having a Start menu...period...I tried but the Charms Bar on the right side is re-training muscle memory that I don't want to be re-trained

I have been running win8 since launch here in aus.. and needles to say i like it alot..

i love not needing one single desktop icon.. all my icons now live in the metro screen, a quick windows key and click and my app/prog launches.. (similar amount of steps to do so in windows 7

i love a clean system tray and a clean task bar.

the fact the os gets faster and faster, even beets all the timings that i have for win7 (used a stop watch..) my pc boots 20seconds faster...

all my programs run without a hitch and smooth as.. i even took the wmc upgrade that came for free..

even if you werent gonna go 8 right away, u could of spent the $20 6months ago and gotten it.. your loss my and others gain..

Top reasons not to install,

1)Metro
2)No Aero-Glass
3)Having to buy a $100~ OS license when Microsoft sold them to anyone for $20 just 6 months ago.

Umm I had to pay $100 to upgrade to 8.1 from 8.0? I better call Microsoft they forgot to charge me.
