Hi, I have a qx9770/ evga 790i sli ftw watercooled build.

I was able to go for a straight 4 Ghz overclock easily by raising the Multiplier to 10. When I ran intel burn test it didn't crap itself instantly so i thought ok good. I figured ram might be a problem so I dropped speeds from 1600 mhz to 1333 and linked my memory modules. Intel burn test completed 4 passes so I didn't see a need to run that any more.

I looked all over for guides with this chip and board or just the chip or the board. Not really a lot of resource available I've searched for a while.

Does anyone have any experience with this chip or board? I've had no problems running this for the last week at 4.0 ghz. I'm not the best at overclocking (inb4 why would you buy an extreme if ur novice)

Last I checked the intel X49 chipset was the overclocking king of the Core2 generation, the Nvidia chipsets weren't really that great. Then again, that is the top-teir Nvidia board.

What are your temps like? What voltage are you running?

Well I had a rampage extreme but my buddy is a huge overclocker so I figured I would let him buy that board off me and I'd keep the 790i since I want to have 3 watercooled 480s in this build.

This board has a really nasty north bridge and heatsink. I think it will satisfy my needs for gaming I am not going for any scores or records.

I haven't messed with any voltages or fsb or anything. Temps were still in the 40s after the overclock I did.

Frankly, you aren't going to gte much more from that board on the FSB side. 790i has a FSB hole from about 400-425. then on top of that, C2Qs typically don't much like a FSB over 450. So if this is on Air, I'd leave my FSB at 400mhz, and see just how high I can push the multi. Under water, I'd give it some NB volts, push the FSB to 450, then start raising the multi.

Damn. I have a good friend who I've helped bench chips with liquid nitrogen..... he wouldn't even screw with this board too much until I could find a walkthrough or something. I already have the multi at 10 and that was supposed to give me 4 ghz. that wasnt stable so i backed off the ram to 1333.

when i went to take a screenshot... noticed my multiplier was actually at 6.0 x 333 and 1333 rated fsb. when i played bf3 for half an hour temps only went up from 30 to 35 degrees. how do i keep the multiplier from changing?

No..Disable Speedstep and C1e and c3e in BIOS
Also in Windows;Set Power option to high performance
I'm not familiar with Nvidia 775 boards
I'm going to guess your cpu is a Yorkfield?
..and being "extreme" It should have an unlocked multi..
I'd say get the RAM where you want it and work the multi :D
Does that board have GTL options?
edit:Yor multi is @ 10. 333 X 10=3333

What are GTL options?
Do I leave CPU voltage at auto for now? I am assuming anywhere in the green is OK but I don't know when I should try to raise it.

I unlinked my memory, put it to 1600 mhz
Disable C1E whatever that does there was no C3E option...
Speedstep is disabled. set to high performance on windows.
looks like that mulitplier bouncing between 6x and 10x finally stopped but it still shows (6-10)

I can play BF3 for about 5 minutes before I get an error. I will run memtest when I am at work.... maybe these sticks themselves are a problem?

temps are 50 degrees across the board by speedfan and core temp... maybe ill redo that thermal paste

If you're overclocking,don't worry about green/yellow/red stuff :D
could be your RAM..could be you need more vcore, fsb term,or NB voltage.
What kind of error does it do?
Freezing with squiggly is usually vtt/NB ,or RAM voltage
blackout is lack of vcore
bsod could be the all of the 1st 3..and/or RAM timings

ok. so i took notes of my errors when running intel burn test and having a blue screen only took about 5 seconds

0x0000000A
0XFFFFF8008F90FF8
0X000000000000000D
X00000000000000001
0XFFFFF80002E7DF36

dunno what that means but thats what i get on blue screen.

WHEN I SET MULTIPLIER TO 9X....

Intel burn test completes all ten passes. I took a few screens of temperatures. I thought my idles were a little high til i downloaded hwmonitor and it shows 30s not 40s like coretemp speedfan. I notice when i go from 100% stress to idle my temps snap right back to normal. is my heatsink application good? im watercooling by the way.

i am now late for work but glad you replied. thanks

But really what should I play with next? North Bridge Voltage?
I'm currently looking up how to deal with BSOD errors and figure out what they are.
Still haven't tested this memory, searching for a cheap kit.

You need moar Mhz d00d
fsb term,nb,clock skew of 100 on cpu..
all those help stability.
Play with the RAM strap, too.
