Windows 8.1 update

install was quick for me, only hangup was trying to find a way to skip the sign in crap.

If you're talking about Microsoft trying to force convert you from a local account to their MIcrosoft online account, apparently unplugging your ethernet cable before the update is working for some people.

One of many reasons I'm sticking with 8.0 for its under-hood improvements since Win7. Microsoft's deceptive new Apple-esque mentality in this Metro era of forced appstores and also-ran online services just rubs me the wrong way, and more importantly adds no significant usability or value.

I guess I fixed the SecureBoot by re-enabling it in the BIOS. When I first got the error message I had it enabled as it had always been so I tried disabling it. That's when I posted earlier. So I just turned it back on and it fixed it.

On a very pleasant secondary note, 8.1 update looks to have incapacitated my laptop. Not sure why just yet.

My install was on a laptop, worked ok just took a while with the slower hdd..

At what point did the laptop crash?

Didn't crash, just running extremely poorly. i7 with an SSD that never had any problems before. Restarting it several times seems to have helped. Opening any window basically froze the system and I had to hard reset a couple times. Maybe it is okay now.

Has anyone noticed text in certain windows is showing up very fuzzy now? If I hover over an icon in the notification tray the text is fuzzy, opening up Chrome is fuzzy, couple other things.

I rolled this out to three machines and I'm noticing it across all of them. All nVidia cards.

Everything is clear for me.

Try adjusting your DPI or cleartext settings

OK, the only thing that isn't working for me after installing it on several PC's and laptops is my MS trackball explorer. It won't let me configure the trackball at all now and isn't being recognized, even after uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.

On my laptop I used the windows monitor calibration to get rid of some extreme gamma my laptop has. During this process it was offering the windows clear text options, I went through the font selection and everything seems ok.

Maybe try running that calibration perhaps something with the clear text? I know it's strange but just a suggestion.

I believe I got to it by right clicking desktop -> screen resolution -> Advanced: Color Management Tab: Advanced Tab: Calibrate.

(or you can search for calibrate)

After I upgraded a laptop at work the action center advised me that I needed to re-install a couple of drivers for them to work properly. One was Intel blue tooth and some usb sound driver. Anyway if something doesn't work or look right, try re-installing the driver. (not a reply to ob1)

I cant get my tv to actually have a signal to it.(using as 2nd monitor). It shows up fine in the screen resolution screen, but the most I can get it to do is occasionally flicker the desktop then it goes right back to the no signal screen on the tv. Anyone know whats up?

On my w7 machine I would have to restart pc, unplug hdmi from tv, turn on tv first..etc or some kind of weird combination to make it work, but nothing works here. Its just weird that the screen will blink showing the desktop.

a gtx770 can run dvi and hdmi at the same time correct?

Tried to calibrate, no change. Wouldn't expect it to since it isn't a problem with everything, just certain windows. Took a screenshot, hopefully it illustrates what I'm seeing: http://sdrv.ms/19UIZ1a

Hard to tell but at least on my screen where it says "Jump Desktop Viewer" it is crystal clear. Pretty much all of the text in Chrome is noticeably fuzzier. I used the windows snipping tool and I'm not sure if it compresses images because it is harder to see in that pic

This sounds familiar to something I saw in the intel forums but you are using nvidia? Can you also check the device manager I think a guy there had the title good but the contents of the tree was blurry, maybe it's similar.

Here was that thread: https://communities.intel.com/message/208262?tstart=0

EDIT: Added link

Just noticed that upgrading to 8.1 reset some of my SB driver settings. The profile I made so I could restore lost settings are gone. Not even sure why there is a profile if it can be lost so easy.

Yeah, device manager looks like rubbish, but the title bar looks fine. If I set the scaling to the smallest value everything looks fine but some windows are a bit too small to read comfortably. I'm going to reinstall my drivers since I am also having an SLI issue.

First attempt rebooted me into a black screen.....I hit restart button and it said "restoring your previous operating system" and then I got an error message that my system couldn't be upgraded to 8.1 ???

I'm guessing it has something to do with SLI or the nVidia 331.40 beta drivers? Do I need WHQL drivers?

I have a legit copy of Win 8 Pro and all....no idea whats going on.

Quick fix for the blurry screen here,

http://www.askvg.com/fix-bold-blurry-or-hard-to-read-font-problem-in-windows-8-1/

My SLI in my laptop broke too, dual 750m and the config only shows one. Re-installing drivers now.

I'm also getting a secureboot isn't configured correctly issue

That fix sort of works. Now everything looks good in medium but large still looks like ass for me, which was what I used before upgrading. Guess we'll have to wait for a proper hotfix or patch.

Please let me know if you get your SLI fixed. Reinstalling drivers didn't fix it for me.

Is anyone else still waiting for the stupid update to show up in the store? I've managed to refresh several times throughout the day and its STILL not showing up...

If you cant get the update put this in your browser and hit enter

ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade

Would love for this to work but it keeps blue screening an an "irq not equal" message and then the install rolls back. I've disabled a bunch of stuff and updated drivers, no luck and not a single message from the install that even assists in troubleshooting.

mine worked fine with the beta drivers and sli 770's.

I even uninstalled them and got the newest approved drivers from nvidia to trya nd fix my tv connection problem and everything still worked fine.

Something is wrong with my image quality now. Its like I am zoomed in and you can see non sharp images (like being on a lower resolution blown up on a higher res screen). but my resolution is set at 1080p . I don't know how else to explain this.

Installed it and finally have everything up and running. Wasn't the prettiest of upgrades. Not sure how I feel about 8.1 at the moment. All the "new" features I pretty much replaced with Classic Shell.

For the people having the update not showing up. you can try this and see if it fixes the issue.

Open up the run command.
Type wsreset.exe and hit enter.
Then go and open up the store.

Most of the new "features" are Metro related so if you're a desktop user like 99% of those without touchscreens then there isn't a whole lot new to speak of. I've read 5 or 6 different reviews and ran 8.1 on a VM for the past couple weeks and the reviews pretty much confirmed my own findings.

Another Microsoft OS fail.

Have or had several of the issues already reported in this thread.

Needed multiple driver re-installs

Laptop seems to be running slower now

The only Start Menu I can see is the one that was already added in Win 8 from the Toolbar, nothing new.

Now getting a .dll loading error.

It's great you can set it to boot to the desktop now, but if that's the only "fix" this is doing it's really not worth the other stuff it's mucked up.

Mine did the same. I just waited for about 10 minutes while the boot drive was blinking every once in a while. It eventually restarted and continued the upgrade.

You probably just killed it by hard powering off.

IRQ not equal error means your system is not stable.

Usually caused by CPU or RAM.

Windows 8.1 fresh install using Windows 8 key, possible or no? I downloaded the 8.1 ISO using this link here

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

I loaded the ISO onto my USB thumb drive. I tried doing a fresh, clean, whatever you want to call it install.....load and behold, both my legit Windows 8 keys DO NOT work with this 8.1 ISO.

Anybody have inside info regarding Microsoft changing this? Am I just SOL in terms of clean installs?

Well apparently My Windows version is not entitled to the free upgrade. Enterprise windows version I need to do full install. Fuck you microsoft suck a bag o'dicks.

The only problems I have noticed so far is that SweetFX does not work for DX11 games - hopefully it gets updated soon because I didn't realize how much I missed it until I ran a game without it.

Also Metro Last Light run in DX9 even though the benchmark runs in DX11. I have no idea how to fix that issue.

I also bypassed the account creation issue by using the old account option.
