I know this is a stretch, most people have forgotten about 4:3 monitors and have been on widescreens forever.

Here's my deal, I'm currently in the process of building a thin-profile arcade cabinet for MAME and various other emulators. I'm actually getting really close to being done, but I just found out that my Dell 2001FP apparently has horrible input lag, which will ruin the fun.

I would love to use a CRT, but my space limitations make that impossible. I've been searching around though, and everything I find talks about widescreen monitors, I can't find anything on low-lag 4:3 displays. The monitor needs to be ~20" and I highly prefer 1600x1200, definitely don't want 1280x1024 (5:4) if I can avoid it.

Thanks!

Also, guess I should have mentioned this earlier, but TN monitors are an absolute deal breaker. Since players will be standing side by side looking at this and different people will be different heights, the screen needs to have fairly good viewing angles.

You'll probably have to hunt one down on eBay, assuming you can find one at all. I can mention a couple of 4:3s, but I doubt any of them would be considered low input lag. But perhaps they wouldn't be so laggy as to matter:

NEC 2090 (IPS) -- price ranges on eBay used, from $60-several hundred. I have seen new ones go for less than $200 on occasion. May be a bit grainy due to AG coating.

NEC 2190 (IPS and VA flavors)... IPS has low contrast, around 500:1. VA is... well, VA, so may not be ideal in regard to ghosting. Both probably have too much input lag if you are really sensitive to it.

Eizo 2100 (VA) ... Again, expensive and probably too laggy. Same panel as NEC 2190uxp.

Eizo 2133 (IPS).... new model, just came out, great contrast for IPS, but expect again, too much lag. Insanely priced, assuming you can even find it.

NEC 2170 (VA)... lower end model similar to 2190, but that could work in your favor, with perhaps a bit less lag. Not sure if VA would be an issue for you or not. Again, only can be found used, most likely.

So, you'd probably have to hunt a used one down on eBay or Craigslist. You can buy new 4:3s still, but they are insanely priced ($800+).

If you had to go with 19", 5:4s, there are some reasonable IPS options out there from NEC, new, at around $180-$220. I am not certain about those specific 19"ers, but I know on older NEC 1990s, you can set the screen ratio via the monitor itself. So it could work in 4:3, just with black bars, at 1280x960.

The samsung 21xT flavors were the first monitors to be known to have bad lag.. it was the first time for it to be bad enough to be noticeable for average users when simply moving the mouse.
I'm not sure if the 213T lags more than two frames but you should definitely stay clear of the 214T it's in the 3 to 5 frame department.
With IPS 20'' monitors there was also the LG 2010p and the Lacie Photon20vision. (identical frame/stance)
The Lacie didn't seem to lag noticeably when I was using it.
The Dell 2007FP (might be lottery) and HP LP2065 would also be possible options.
