Interesting HTC and MS Rumor

MS Execs smoking crack again

Google will balk at this. While Android is open source - the Google APK's and API's (essentially, access to their ecosystem) are not. I doubt Google will approve a phone that runs both Windows Phone and Android...especially since Android is one of the top dogs when it comes to the mobile market.

Only a matter of time before HTC goes under anyway...

You actually think google will give a flying fuck? They dont care about the OS all they care about is serving you the ads... Google dont give 2 shits about android and how its presented to the users as long as it is presented to them at all.

LOL at the HTC swan song...

I imagine Google would give a fuck if people were using Windows Phone on phones they approved as Android phones. People don't use Android, or more specifically, Google Services within Android, Google doesn't make money.

Read Post 2 again.

Google approves all phones that contain Google Services preinstalled - this includes Google Play Store, GMail, Chrome, Music, etc, etc.

Android itself is open source but the Google apps are not.

Android with amazon app store, DONE.

I think dual booting was a HUGE deal for apple when they were trying to leverage the iPod and iTunes to get back into the market with laptops and desktops. I have been looking for a phone that could do this for a while. I was hoping people would make ROMs for popular phones.

As far as google and the services. I think google cannot control this to a certain degree because they leached off Linux and claimed open source. So they can't legally go and try to shut everyone out of using android. However they can leverage other issues, like say, you cant integrate gmail, google navigation or other popular services with that phone if you do that.

The problem though is this. MS is weak in mobile and they are trying to break in, but unfortunately because it is cheaper / possible their path to break in always seems to be trying to partner with a company that is on it's way out. And all this means is that MS is going to put more bad or redundant phones out there. What ever mistakes Nokia or HTC are making that is causing the decline of their phones is now a problem fro windows phone.

Not just gmail and google maps but the Google Play Store, which is the key and holds the most value in the entire Android ecosystem. Imagine having a smartphone that can't download any apps from a store front. Sure you can side load them, but the average joe is not going to know how to do that.

The only way Microsoft can break into the market is by going after corporate customers. RIM is pretty much gone and many IT houses are having nightmares over figuring out a proper way of managing iOS and Android devices. If MS can take RIM's place by leveraging AD and building a great MDM system that provides this level of integration, I think they have a shot. The last hurdle at that point will be "how do we make ourselves cool again"

This would get us closer and closer to modular phones......

I am ok with this.....

I also hope this means MS is getting away from strict specs for their phones and having a more broad approach to bleeding edge hardware that is coming out.

I highly doubt the average consumer would understand dual booting anything. It seems niche at best.

You never know, the exact same thing was said about smartphones to begin with and now look at things.

To add, bigger screens was on that list too!

You could, in theory......have one boot for pleasure......one boot for business......both being tailored to those lifestyles which would be awesome since once you get into work in the morning.....less likely someone would see something NSFW on your phone......

That's just a thought off the top of my head though.

Why dual boot ? Android is able to be virtualized. Vmware did it with version 2.2. You can have biz and pleasure on the same phone with out rebooting.

Well for one, virtualization is going to lower performance and since everyone seems to think that the fluidity of the interface is the most important thing in a phone dual booting might be the preferred option.

Could you Vm it with a differing OS?

I only ask that because I did not know, and unsure if you can.

So let's say you own a Droid phone, yet your company is IOS based or BB based.....and you were able to get those OS's dual booted on a phone or VM'ed......

hella convient

Aren't there restrictions that Taiwan has in place that prevents PRC majority ownership?
No idea.

But the way these international companies set themselves up is that they have fully owned subsidiaries in every country. They could pull something where Lenovo US buys HTC rather than Lenovo China.

Of course that's a simplistic interpretation of it...could be much more complicated than that.
