So I'm getting back into folding after a hiatus under my flag for team 33 'ajurban'.

What I'm wondering is what has changed in the past two years really? Anything huge?

Also, are there any specific configs I should use for the following:

i5 3570k w/ GTX 680

and i7 3740QM @2.7ghz in a laptop w/ a NVS 5200m w/ 1gb gddr5

I think the biggest thing is that GPU folding is back with QRB and AMD GPU's no longer suck. Only one of those changes will apply to you, but i'd say your best bet by far would be to run the GPU client on that GTX 680. you won't get a ton out of your CPU and fah on a laptop has always made me nervous

don't fold on your laptop. its easy to fix and change things on a PC but laptops cant really take the serious heat. and are much more expensive to fix. (unless its sacrificial, then fold on!)

Folding on a laptop still sucks and is horribly inefficient.

2P and 4P systems have skyrocketed in use and demand with BigAdv.

Nvidia (600 Series or higher) and AMD (HD 7000 Series or higher) are seeing tremendous gains in PPD folding on the new Core_17 currently in Beta/Advanced, probably reaching full on mainstream by the end of the year or early next. Still more can be squeezed out on the Nvidia side if Nvidia gets there damn drivers in order.

That's probably the big ones. Things are a changing for the better. It will be interesting to see GPU BigAdv although I think we are all wondering how that is going to work out and which ones would be capable of doing it. You got a perty GPU for F@H using the beta flag :).

Best flags for you sir, would be advanced so you can get core17 WU without getting not-quite-ready-for-prime-time WU. Also note that for core17, the world has flipfloped. It used to be that AMD/ATI cards took up a full CPU while folding, now it is reversed. Older WU are still the same but are being phased out.

Shout if you need any help getting going and let us know if you got running.

Defeat Default! [H]uzzah!

The 680 should make decent points ??70k-100k PPD??? however the other stuff would be extremely inefficient at folding. That isnt to say it would be useful, just that you would spend more to run them than you would really be making PPD wise.

4P's are the way to go now days for big points through BigAdv. If you wanted to come back slowly you could look for an F Socket 4P for around $200-300 and make anywhere from 180k-250k PPD depending on the CPU's you wind up with. A G34 4P would net you a great deal of PPD but would run you about $1000 startup costs unless you have parts laying around you can use.

GPU folding is def viable, just takes quite a bit of power as well as having your GPU running 24/7 which equals quite a bit of heat/noise if not water cooled (although the same could be said about a 4p).

Hop in IRC if you have any specific questions. We can get you up and running on nearly any budget.

What is the PPD breakdown like on high end GPUs these days? Titan? GTX780? GTX680? Radeon 7970/280X?

7970 Overclocked is sitting at about 100-110k PPD. Ive heard the Titans are anywhere from 150-180k PPD when overclocked nicely. Id assume the 780's are right around or just under the titan numbers.

Nvidia just announced a pretty impressive game bundle for the titan and 780. I might have to by one
