A few days ago, I ordered parts for new gaming pc along with the Gigabyte GTX 760 4GB. I realized the AMD will release the R9-280X within a few days and the price is similar to the GTX 760. Should I return the GTX 760 and order the R9-280X?

they perform nearly identically. i'd just keep what you have unless there's some feature drawing you to AMD (Mantle?).

For what it is worth, the 280x equals or bests the gtx770 according to reviews just posted on the [H]. The only thing you would get with a 760 that the 280x lacks is PhysX, which is used in a few games.

The 760 and GHz edition 7970 perform nearly the same? That's news to me.

The 280x and the 760??! LOL

hmmm i've been known to be wrong from time to time :D. i just quickly perused the Anand article before posting that. unless i'm having a mental aneurysm they look to perform close to each other. maybe 'nearly identical' was the wrong wording to use.

Porter, if the 760 is close to the 280x then my 7950 is close to the 780 / Titan. In some of those benchmarks the 760 looks lost. In some it did get within 6 fps which I would call close. But some of those it's losing by over 15 fps. Nvidia makes good products, but the 760 isn't in R9 280x territory.

Sorry to disagree.

yeah i see now it's getting hammered in some of the benchmarks. in others it's close and others it beats the 280X. i'm off the mark but not 'OMG LOL' off the mark.

Porter, if you're gonna make an alt, at least give it a different opinion! lol jkjk

Should I return the GTX 760

No

The restocking fee will probably cover the price drop for this card. R 280X is a $300 7970 GE which a good 760 can be competitive with in some games

Though if money no object, of course yes. OC'd the 280X will pull away

IF by "Pull Away", you mean stomp the shit outta it, then you would be correct..There is no reason, other then Physx:rolleyes:, to own an Nvidia card outside of the 780 right now..

The AMD cards, 7950/7970 own the $180-$300 price bracket. Period. The closest thing you can get is to spend $100 MORE vs the 280X, or over $150-170 more (vs the 7950/7970 after MIRs) to get the same performance...

Nvidia will HAVE to either cut the price of the 770 to ~$350 (since their fan boys will pay $50 more for "Physx") or release a 760TI that is super highly clocked to try to compete.

If the restocking fee doesn't kill you I'd return it for the 280X, or a 7970 if you can find a good deal on clearance. Though I'd go with a 280X simply because many of the AIBs are updating them with their newest coolers (Asus/MSI).

I'm even considering swapping my vapor-x 7970GE for the asus top 280x if it's voltage unlocked. The review suggested it was but just because the gputweak says 1.4v doesn't mean it is.

If you want bang for the buck, then you should return it. If you want an nvidia card, then I doubt the price drops would cover or be that much different to justify the 15% restocking. You might as well keep the darn thing to save on the hassle.

This is why you should never spend time reading about video cards after you buy one - you will always end up with buyer's remorse, because something faster and cheaper is always released a few weeks later.

Stop reading the forums and go play some games with it!

Personally I'd keep the 760 unless you plan on bitcoining. In my experience Nvidia is better with their drivers. I upgraded my 5870 to a gtx770 and couldn't be happier with the performance and software support. Unless the newer AMD cards have better driver support... Also not trying to turn this into a fanboy dispute

I shipped back the Gigabyte GTX 760 back to to Newegg today and I did not get charged a restocking fee. I ordered the Asus R9-280X from Newegg as a replacement for the GTX 760.

Drivers for the R9 280x shoudl be pretty solid since it's a 7970. AMD has had over a year to fix them ;)

Did you use the 10% mobile coupon code? It works on the 280X since there's no free games.

Why not one of the 7970s on sale with three games for $270?

Nice choice. The cooler Asus uses on their 280X is the same one as on their GTX 780. It's one of the quietest coolers (if not THE quietest) out there.

I recently got the MSI 760 myself. I was thinking of returning it but at the same time I figure I'd rather just pickup another 760 and SLI them when the price drop happens. I HATE waiting for new tech. A week or so is fine to wait and see how things go down, but like SO much other tech constantly being released its impossible to keep up with the Joneses' when buying tech.

If I were you I'd keep the 760... save the 50/60 bucks.... Enjoy your item NOW... and then in a month during Blackfriday grab another 760 and dominate anything you play for the next year or two.

I just upgraded from HD5850's in CrossfireX. - I'm not going back to Radeon. I hate the constant crashes, screen tearing, flash crashing, weird artifacts when you overlock just a little bit and the HEAT.
