Battlefield 4 Beta Discussion

I can't believe you get two heat seekers in the heli then you have to wait like 30+ seconds to get just one more. Who thought of that?

The server lag for me has been absolutely brutal as of late...

I've been badly lagged the entire open beta so far - regardless of which server I choose in North America. (While I'm closest to Washington, District of Congresscritters, I had to wait until Sunday for the DC server to open; the first two days, I played on either Seattle or Chicago - and both were lagged to heck and back. I was hoping the far-closer DC server would be better - in fact, it was worse. And that is despite sub-100ms ping times to any NA server.)

I don't know whether to be glad that it's not just me, or even more horked off that it's not just me.

It's a PDW, not an AR. And it's just you. Stop going full auto and recognize that the gun has limited effective range. Fire in bursts if you must use automatic mode, and try to pick guys off rather than engage groups.

Eventually, you'll unlock the AK5C after getting enough points with the MX4. The AK5C might be the best gun in the beta.

It is kind of silly for a 9mm SMG to recoil harder than a rifle. Limited range (makes sense), but heavy recoil? What advantages does it have over the rifles? Cut the recoil, limit the range and damage and call it good.

Looking forward to getting the AK5C.

You dont need more than two if you learn to adapt. Meaning get in close (100-150m) to enemy heli before you launch them - at that range they're going through his flares, then you have 6 seconds to finish him off with your rockets/gunner cannon. Its a little silly if not arcade shooter-y but thats the reality until TV missiles get unlocked in the retail game. Heli dogfights from longer ranges like in BF3 are a waste of time and merely open you up to stinger spam and PLD+RPG cheapshit the longer you hover out in the open. You also want to be above enemy heli at all times until he's dead.

If your CPU usage is like 80% or more overall and GPU usage is low, that's a bug, not the intended performance. It causes stuttering and such. I have that problem and have not been able to fix it. It's hurting my ability to judge this beta.

Yeah, for some reason afterburner overlay isn't working (for any game on my part), but I've ran it in windowed to monitor both usages. GPU sets at 40-50% while all CPU cores are 80 - 95%

Afterburner lives in the past and has no 64 bit support.

What advantages does it have over the rifles?

None. It's a PDW. It isn't supposed to win in a straight up fight against an AR. That's why the Engineer class is not the Assault class. Engineer is meant to take on vehicles and use the PDW to pick off the guys running out of the burning vehicle confused as to where they are and what they're surrounded by. They can also supplement an assault force by providing a group with anti-vehicle and vehicle repair capability.

Though the AK5C does narrow the gap very, very noticeably.

Game seems okay so far but it feels like a BF3 expansion pack. This was suppose to be the game that finally enticed me to upgrade my video card but I'm not so sure any more.

Is aiming down the sights weird for anyone else? It seems to hold the gun super steady but I can't really track with it. Not sure if this is a new mechanic or if I just missed an option in controls.

sorry if posted guys.

but a patch is coming for the beta.

not sure why i cant post the link.

Spent last 24 hours fighting PC graphics driver thread contention & stalls in #BF4. Believe I've won this battle, but not yet the war

Luke Rothwell
Can you please address the cpu usage problem before the release of bf4 Thanks

Johan Andersson
that is exactly what I just said I've been working on :)

So expect some improvements in the next #BF4 OpenBeta patch. Though Win8 w/ our DX11.1 backend is definitely the fastest path (until Mantle)

But we don't wanna buy W8 just for one game...

and neither do you have to. Windows 7 should work fine, please test after the OpenBeta has been updated

Screw this...got tired of loading in 30 seconds after everyone else...ordered 3 x 4gb of Corsair Dominators last night on my Amazon Prime ..12 Gb tonight here we come! :p

Did anyone notice the 25% XP booster? One booster gives 25% XP for one hour. I don't think you can deactivate it after starting the booster, though.

ive gotten 25, 50, and 200% xp boosts

Last night I installed the 8.1 preview coming from 7. I can without a doubt say that it does indeed boost the performance of the Battlefield 4 beta. On my Sony fw900 I tried 2560x1600 and with everything maxed out I was getting a constant 45 to 50 fps and a few hiccups that dipped into the 30s. At 1920x1200 I was getting fps in the 70s. Dipping to the 50s in heavy scenarios. I'm using the current 331 beta drivers. I'm just amazed at the level of performance that was noticeable. Im sure they'll Do a fix for those on windws 7 but with BF4 using frostbite 3 and dx11.1 is standard in 8. I'm upgrading to 8.1. GPU is overclocked to 1250 but boosts up to 1289 and memory is 8000mhz. Hope this helps anyone who had stuttering problems in the beta.

PS. My Windows 7 performance in the beta prior to installing the 8.1 the fps was all over the place. It was unplayable.

Same here. I can say I've had a much better experience on 8 than on 7. 8 has some major under the hood improvements over 7, and 8.1 apparently has further improvements.

I totally understand the resistance to Windows 8, but if your number one objective on your PC is to play games, then 8 is worth it.

I gotten two boosters in battlepacks thus far, but don't know how to activate them.

Is windows 8.1 as terrible as windows 8? When I checked it out when if first showed up I thought it was an abomination. Is there a legit start menu and windows explorer now? Considering many upcoming games will be using FB3 engine and it has been confirmed to run much better in windows 8, it may very well be a good idea to bite the bullet on W8.1.

Why does a little part of me feel like it is dying when I think about leaving W7 for W8? LOL.

Did you do a clean install of 8.1 preview coming from 7 or just install over 7? Last year I would have taken the time to full install, but with the new kid around I just don't want to deal with it.

when you are customizing your kit ingame the boost thing is at the bottom right of the screen

this happened yesterday:

Also, do you guys think its worth upgrading to Windows 8 in general? I've been using it on my laptop, and I think its alright. Not a fan of the start screen, but my gaming machine is really just for gaming. so if there are significant improvements, then I would like to upgrade.

Is windows 8.1 as terrible as windows 8?

Nope. It's not a direct Windows 7 clone, but we aren't getting that any time soon. 8.1 is still an improvement over 8. You can boot straight to the desktop, for instance.

Is there a legit start menu and windows explorer now?

There's a start button. It launches the Start Screen, not a Windows 7 style start menu. There is, however, the option to have it launch an "all apps" listing rather than the Start Screen. Personally, I've gotten used to the Start Screen. It's basically a full screen start menu with large square shortcut icons.

Considering many upcoming games will be using FB3 engine and it has been confirmed to run much better in windows 8, it may very well be a good idea to bite the bullet on W8.1.

If gaming is your top priority, yeah. I use a Mac Mini for general computing, and the PC in my sig is purely a gaming rig, so I have no problem with 8 or 8.1 or any other variant. I just boot straight to the desktop, fire up Steam and Origin, and play my games.

Great, thanks!

Just use Classic Shell if you want a start menu / tweaked explorer on W8. You never have to see Metro again if that's what you want.

I am planning on upgrading my system soon anyway. Seeing all of these posts with the dramatic improvement over win7 for this game is making me considering Win8 for the first time.

Decisions decision.

Just do it. Even after DICE releases the patch it will still run better on 8, Repi said so in his tweet, and I have a feeling there could very well be future games that exhibit similar performance characteristics. Then of course, if there is another DX version, it will be an 8 exclusive. Cut your losses now, go with 8. Install one of the many start menu apps out there, I like Classic Shell and not worry about it for at least the next 3 years.

Going to see how much better in Win 8 vs. Win 7...

Heck, I'm probably just going to get a new SSD, Win 8, grab a 290x........ BF4 will be my 'reason'.

It will be my reason too and I'm far from ashamed. I tried Win8 during the RC days and I didn't like it, but I will be the first to admin that I didn't spend more than 30 minutes with it. I suppose it may be time to give it another shot.

Not sure if posted

Wow, that performance delta is crazy.

Don't assume it will be that much of a difference at retail launch. DICE knows most people still have Win7. Its strictly an optimization issue, Win8 isn't inherently better for gaming.

Is there a factual answer as to why windows 8 is receiving significantly more frames? I'm primarily curious because I have yet to see anyone recommend 8 for gaming outside of this thread and only for BF4. If the issues with 7 performance are centered on Dices' lack of optimization for the OS then why upgrade? Especially given the fact they are already intending to boost performance in 7.
