Microsoft's New Surface Tablets Are Close To Selling Out

But who's to say that they didn't sell out initially and then they turned around and made more, but made to many?
Hell the same thing could happen to any company. Have initial orders be strong then it falls flat after making more thinking demand was strong.

You mean like selling out the original 10,000 then deciding to make 1,000,000 more? Yeah, that makes the write-off go down so much better...

Yea they fucked up but shit happens sometimes. They are a muti billion dollar company and what the lost was just a drop in the ocean but I would think that they have learned from that and won't let it happen again.

If I use as a desktop, icons are too small. If I use as a tablet, icon is too small. I will pass.

The Pro is the best selling device in its class. For people to say it's expensive, are the people who don't understand it's purpose and usage.

It out performs many devices in its class. By leaps and bounds.

Tell me oh wise one what's its purpose and usage?

Guyz, what's the usage of a full desktop system in tablet format????? Help me understand this...

You sound like every car commercial ever created where the car is the only one in it's class.

It's an x86 Windows tablet with a Wacom digitizer. These kinds of devices have for many years had a core group of artists and students and professionals with handwriting input needs. This is a niche market but these needs still aren't met well with iPads and Android tablets,

Don't people normally use more robust laptops for that kind of usage? Wouldn't a lightweight ultra-book be better in that circumstance?

A conventional clamshell laptop for digital inking? A convertible laptop sure but not a conventional clamshell.

x86 Windows tablets have been around for close to a decade now and they never became popular. Throwing a Wacom digitizer on top of it with a tablet OS hasn't changed anything. Digital artists are such an incredibly small subset of users that they are insignificant in user counts. This is akin to the Blackberry zealots who claimed that QNX was the next best thing since sliced bread. The consumers spoke loudly and didn't care. Now look at Blackberry. iOS and Android owns the tablet market and unless Microsoft does something groundbreaking that will never change. The days of Microsoft owning the consumer markets are dwindling (albeit at a very, very slow pace).

Um...what's your point? Does that change the fact that the Surface Pro is very useful for some people?

That MS is not doing anything to address the issues which is the OS ;) .
So even if MS is selling by their accounts many many many , no they aren't selling are they ? Well not now anyway it is still somewhat of a car with 5 wheels , competition sells it with 4 but MS still going strong.

Not optimized whatsoever for the smaller memory nor disk space, let alone the GUI .

Pretty subjective there. I tend to like the GUI on my Lenovo 11s.
As for the memory, what machines these days come with less than 4gb of ram (which is plenty for the kinds of machines that come with that much)? And since most come with 6-8 gb...
As for disk space, that's more of an issue with flash memory cost than anything else. If disk space is an issue for you, buy a big ole SD card for $50 and you'll be fine. After all, it IS a tablet.

5th wheel ;) , it works for MS ;)

mem and disk space are not real problems for Surface. you clearly don't own one. The GUI is GREAT for touch.

Seriously just seems like this guy is trying to come up with some random ass statement just for the purpose of bashing the product, i mean seriously its blatently obvious he doesnt own one. I bought an EEE Slate from Asus for college back a few years ago, it ran on windows 7, and i will say without any doubt, it was the best investment i ever made for school. I can only imagine the windows 8 works even better.

as for the RT, id say in terms of interface alone, it is better than Android and IOS, SIGNIFICANTLY. Its low app support isnt that big of a deal seeing as how most of the apps on IOS and Android are absolute garbage anyways

Outside of a few markets Microsoft has been losing money hand over fist for years: it's why Ballmer got kicked out. The only reason they aren't losing money hand over fist in mobile as well is due to their legalized extortion racket leeching off of Android's success.

You give them far too much credit.

your kidding yourself if you think microsoft is losing money hand over fist, theyre posting huge profits. And frankly, android is right now, the shittiest most unstable mobile platform out there

Two different things. They make enough of a killing in their core areas to get away with subsidizing other divisions, but they lose money in a LOT of areas.

Heck, to take the best known example their Online Services division has lost nearly $11 billion since 2005. If I'm not mistaken still are in the hole overall by billions overall on the Xbox. They've had virtually no success in selling Windows on tablets or phones, never mind all their older well-hyped flops.

They're not exactly an HP story yet, but for the last fifteen years they've been unable to (profitably) expand outside of areas where they can directly leverage their desktop OS monopoly.

Im thinking about selling my RT and buying a nex gen one, the OS is perfect for what i do on a tablet.

One awesome APP is MetroRadio which uses Pandoras API, it allows for unlimited skips, no commercials, lets you see the next 5 songs coming up, and allows you to rewind a song to hear it again, best part is that its FREE!

They learned their lesson from almost a billion dollars in write-offs last time. Better to sell out of a few thousand units than sit on piles of unsold and unwanted inventory.

Microsoft has numerous products and divisions that lose money. Lots of money. Even the XBox, their most "successful" product is billions in the red after over a decade.

None of that matters when Windows and Office make more than enough to pay for all those failures and still turn a huge profit.

Why does the site keep showing me prices in GBP? It says at the top the closest store to me, Glendale (Los Angeles), but for some reason the price is in pounds?

Okay, wait

4GB RAM & 64GB SSD = $899
8GB RAM & 512GB SSD = $1799??

I know Apple is famous for charging absurd amounts for upgrades, but $900 for that SSD and RAM is ridiculous.

I didnt think the v2's were even out yet?

Another Q... i held off getting a Pro v1 because of a few things. But one being that the SSD wasnt user replaceable. Do we think that's going to be possible with the Pro 2?

The most sensible model to get is the 256GB, which is where the 8GB RAM starts.

The iFixit score for the Surface Pro was 1/10. The SSD is removable, but they said you'd probably ruin your tablet.

Oldest trick. Create artificial demand by saying shit is sold out, except in this case, no one is falling for it.

Guyz, what's the usage of a full desktop system in tablet format????? Help me understand this...

As a graduate student I do a lot of interviews. The camera is great for recording them. The digitizer is great for taking notes digitally, which are so much easier to organize and search. I can do SPSS type crosstabs on this same device without having to get to a desktop or carrying a heavy laptop. Its also powerful enough to connect to a hub at home and use multiple monitors.

At work, for people like appraisers, police, political advisors, doctors, lawyers, etc have total use for something like this. I often work on campaigns, and its a great database tool. Its like a laptop, but smaller and more portable, and I can write notes when I need too. Some use ipads, but they certainly lose out, when it comes to pulling real data and needing to create quick devices or good photo edits. Definitely is a killer for quick presentations.

I can take this same device on the road and use anything windows or android has out there for entertainment. Basically, this has become my one dominant device, whereas in former times I've had a desktop, laptop and a kindle fire. Sold everything else and more than recouped on a device that can do what all of the others did. I hope Microsoft stays the course. They have it right. They really need to hit the Modern apps hard to make sure the mobile consumption experience is better and just as easy as the others.

Heh, I was simply mocking a previous poster's questions.

I know full well how awesome the Surface is. Just two weeks now until release...
