Legit Review has the Haswell powered Intel NUC Kit D54250WYK in house for a little review action today. If you want a system that has all the bells and whistles and fits in the palm of your hand, this review is for you.

The first generation NUC left us impressed, but there was certainly room for improvement. Intel is severely limited by the NUC’s ultra-compact device design, but the new Intel NUC packs more features into an even slimmer form factor. This is not a small feat as the designers had a long list of changes to be made. Besides making the NUC faster and more energy efficient, they also had to improve cooling and add better connectivity options.

Very interesting concept, but man, does it gets expensive quickly.

Not really a big mac person, but pushing $700 is in the mac mini territory. Assuming the mini gets a haswell refresh with hd5000 graphics, you will get thunderbolt, an sd slot, a built in PSU, and the option to use any 2.5" ssd. Sure, the mini is slightly larger, but I think $700 is a bit overpriced.

Think of this as a case, powersupply, motherboard and i5 cpu and it's price is not bad at all.

USB wireless $7
120gb SSD $90
power cord $3
8gb Ram $40
Nuc $360 (estimated)
$500 - pick whatever os ya want, linux is free

Want to spend less, usb3 500gb hard drive ($50), 4gb ram ($20), use the wired connection.
500gb usb3 $50
power cord $3
4gb Ram $20
Nuc $360 (estimated)
$433

Check local thrift shops for the power cord, save a buck or two, use a usb thumbdrive and boot off it (no hard drive needed), you could make it even cheaper.

Is it possible to confirm that this unit will indeed boot from a USB-connected DVD? I would hate to buy it and then have to return it just because it won't boot from a DVD.

Pretty much any motherboard created in the last 5+ years should boot from USB CD/DVD roms. I don't even put optical drives in my PCs anymore, for the longest time. I use a USB CD/DVD.

I saw the review earlier and then I saw the Surface Pro 2 with dock... Decisions, decisions...

I think one of the reviews for this NUC said third party cases may allow the addition of a 2.5" HDD/SSD. This NUC is almost perfect for my needs and will consume minimal amount of power. I do want to use a 2.5" SSD though. Does anyone here know of a third party case (preferably in black) that will support this motherboard?

Silverstone showed a couple of cases like that at computex, but the 2.5 isn't exactly internal. It's more like a hot swap bay thing (the top cover lifts off one side allowing you insert a 2.5 drive but it doesn't go all the way in and it is raised)
