Here's the new Steam Controller, what do you guys think?

Traditional gamepads force us to accept compromises. We’ve made it a goal to improve upon the resolution and fidelity of input that’s possible with those devices. The Steam controller offers a new and, we believe, vastly superior control scheme, all while enabling you to play from the comfort of your sofa. We think you’ll agree that we’re onto something with the Steam Controller, and now we want your help with the design process.

*blink*

Looks terrible for FPS games, kids, any game that needs more than four buttons, and action games.

Trackpads are garbage. Whoever decided this was superior to a thumbstick needs to be flogged.

/thread.

Well I'm going to go against the hate grain mentality and say that I believe it'll be awesome. Valve prototypes their stuff for years before they ever release it and they wouldn't release this if their internal testing didn't prove it to be better then the 'traditional' gamepads of today.

I have my doubts, but its Valve so I'll give them a chance. I can't wait to try it out.

My preference would have been a highly accurate motion chip and gyroscope where minor hand movements could have been used for control (much like a mouse) ... I find finger control of games to be hard on me ergonomically so I am not a big fan of this ... might work well for the console crossover crowd though, too early to tell

The last controller to get the button right was the sega Saturn.

you need 6 buttons. Not having them just doesn't make sense.

IMO the controller is better for some RPG's and all fighting games. and for fighting games you need 6 buttons all next to each other to be most effective.

I think it looks interesting. I rarely use a controller anymore, but I will not pass judgement until either I get to try one or I read some hands on reviews.

This reminds me of the thumb touch controls on tablet games and I would suspect will work well for some games and not so much for others. It certainly isn't going to replace the keyboard and mouse for traditional PC gamers.

If I remember right, Sega had a screw-in stick in the middle of their gamepads.

As for Steam... that's ... different. I'll reserve judgment until I try it.

I think it looks amazing and Kudos to Steam for INNOVATING.
While Sony and Microsoft take the deer in the headlights approach with controller design, Steam came up with something new and I think that is great.

Hopefully it handles as well as it looks.

I'll try it out before I pass judgement. Looking forward to doing so.

Definitely not enough buttons and who the hell things a track pad is a good idea for gaming!?!?!?

Unless the resolution on that track pad is incredible the result will be an inaccurate and frustrating control interface. I can't imagine a single AAA game that would play nicely with track pads.

Could you imagine trying to play Last Light with that controller?

The left bumper and Y button when held toggle the keymapping to allow for an additional 12 buttons!! (Playing LL on big picture mode)

WTF GABEN!

That thing looks like its going to be terrible to try and game with.
Then again, so did the N64 controller, but that turned out to be one of the single greatest controllers to play a fps on in history.
So... I'm going to reserve judgement for now.

just as I thought, the most interesting announcement in all these Steam-news. I thought they would go with a touch-controlled device, that's the only thing that makes sense to closely resemble mouse behaviour on a hand-held controller.

I'm surprised at the # of negative responses here. Lets wait to check it out, from the press info it sounds like they really thought it through and it's new technology, not like the pads of old.

I'm sure it will collect a lot of hate from controller/console fans. Its attempt at differences are a testament that controllers are inferior.

at first glance it looks like a terrible joke but if it gets good reviews I'd at least try it at best buy or whatever. of course with FPS mouse wins by miles... why are developers trying so hard to improve on that?

Not a fan. Trackpads are generally awful for fast-paced games. I hate trying to use the on-screen controls for movement/looking in a smartphone game.

So at the end of the day we got SteamOS that's just some Linux distro with a Steam skin, Steam Machines that are basically a standard PC with SteamOS installed instead of Windows, and a touch pad controller.

Awesome Valve...good to see you made some good stuff that people have been asking to have for years now instead of stuff like Half Life 3 or Source 2 or stuff that people give a shit about.

I'm geniunly intrigued. Though I'm going to miss a dedicated D-pad, and front facing buttons for more traditional games. Since I'm not a FPS player much anymore. I look forward to new takes on the traditional gamepad. I've been quite happy with Sony's Dualshock2/3 controllers and been considering getting a Xbox 360 wired gamepad for simplicity sake.

Out of the 3 announcements, I'm just want to play with SteamOS the most.

I would have like to see Valve make a more standard controller and improve on that instead of making a controller designed to emulator a mouse/track pad.

As I said in the Gaming forum, wouldn't this be the controller they started testing I believe in the San Francisco area? I remember Valve was looking for select testers who lived in that area. I would have applied, but I live nowhere near there.

I would think that this controller was a result of all the testing they did in private and in-house at Valve, gathering feedback from random users on how to make a controller that would work for BOTH PC games and the livingroom. Many speculated motion controls, a fancy keyboard-cum-controller hybrid, Wii-mote-like controller, or a giant touchpad controller like the one for the Wii U.

We should give this controller the benefit of a doubt and give it a try. I'm wiling to try it myself. You have to remember these were tested by PC users themselves.

We are PC users as well. We don't represent the majority of PC gamers out there nor did the testers, but I'm sure they had to come to a compromise that would best work in the living room.

Valve tests the shit out of everything. If this controller ends up sucking, you will NEVER KNOW IT because Valve will never let you touch or buy one.

Also, people complaining about lack of buttons. If you look at the spec it seems like the trackpads are clickable in the four separate up/down/left/right regions. there are your buttons.
