Next gen faster than anything NVIDIA has...

You know HardOCP has one of these already and I think this posting is to indirectly confirm what AMD is "sezzing" lol

AMD sez...but what does [H] say?...it's almost a given at this point with all the leaks that it'll be faster but the question is how much faster...and more importantly at what price?

Kor Sez that Kyle has been awake reviewing R9's for to many hours and is currently fueled by bourbon.

I certainly hope so. I've had my 7950 since launch and I really want a single gpu upgrade that is worth having that is not a ridiculously overpriced $650-$1000.

Of course anything released right now has to be faster than what nVidia released some months ago, I'm more worried about how they compete with nVidia's next gen. Seems both companies are out of sync at the moment.

You have been following the Nvidia fans then I guess?
This generation of cards is agaisnt Titan/780, next year 20nm is a whole new ballgame.

I really hope these things do well, if only to bring Nvidia's pricing here in AUS under control. Seriously the price difference between a stock 780 and a custom 7970 is on average around 300 bucks.

Kyle, you are ever the enigmatic...

Kor, I respect you; it is DIFFICULT being a hardware enthusiast here in Australia.

Gotcha, forgot about the process node

I guess I like it better when both companies released their stuff closer together, less confusing :p

Me too. 7970s can be had for under AUD$400 and the cheapest 780 I can see is $750. Would have been happy to grab a 780 without waiting for AMDs cards if they weren't so $%&*ing expensive.. If the new AMD cards are faster than the 780 I'll be thanking Nvidia for making me wait, I guess.

It appears that this time AMD decided to hold back until they had something to trump nVidia. Typically they rush to be first to market and often end up having a great big bullseye painted on their new card for nVidia to aim at.

If the leaks are to believed, the fastest AMD card is either toe-to-toe or faster than the 780 and Titan with certain games.

But, if AMD brings this card out to $599 USD with that kind of performance, Nvidia needs to think long and [H]ard about their pricing.

R9 290X = $599

vs.

GTX 780 = $650 (before rebates and discounts)
Titan = $999

Maxwell is gonna be 28nm, and released in Q1 2014 (so around February?)...

I bet nvidia is mailing "factory overclocked" GTX 780s to all reviewers right now to muddy the waters...

I'd hope that HardOCP tests reference only as a fair basis of comparison - reference stock clocks versus reference stock clocks.

Well they did review the 7970 vs a highly overclocked (and more expensive) 580. But they always acknowledge this fact in their performance and value metrics.

That doesn't make much sense to me. Most review websites i've seen do stock vs stock clocks as it is only fair (for launch reviews), unless they substantially overclock the 9970 card as well and don't include stock 9970 numbers.

That said, it is of course normal to "overclock" a card in any launch review and put those results on a separate, single page to show how well the architecture does at higher clock speeds. That I have no issue with - But to compare a stock 9970 to an overclocked 780 throughout an entire review? Seems highly disingenuous. But, I don't think this will be an issue. Nearly every launch review I remember including the GTX 580, GTX 680, and 7970 all used stock vs stock as a basis of comparison.

Nividia factory clock increase isn't stock? So the 7970 GHz isn't stock clocks? If it came from Nvidia or AMD, it's stock. AIBs increases the clocks which turns them into OC versions.
But I doubt we'll see anything new from Nvidia this year, short of the 790 or Titan Ultra.

They compare the closest price points. If the R9 290X is $600, then they'll probably review against a stock 780 (hopefully Titan as well as a bonus), since most overclocked 780's are around the $700 mark.

No, what i'm saying is when a review website, for instance, uses a highly overclocked card such as a 780 HOF as a basis of comparison. The 780 HOF is clocked 200mhz higher than reference, on average, and would muddy the comparison by a large amount. Unless they in turn overclocked the 9970 by a similar amount, but comparing a factory OC'ed 780 versus a stock 9970 would be just silly.

But I don't think this will be an issue. 99 out of 100 websites use stock reference for everything in launch reviews - this was true for the 680 and 7970.

All the nvidia blowhards were screaming no way can it match/beat Titan...

It will be surprising, but that said, titan is a chopped gk110 with overclocking headroom. If they get matched this time they can launch the better chip, if they want. Quadro k6000 is shipping in 2 weeks according to newegg.

Unless Nvidia increases the ROPs to 60, I doubt it will perform much faster with all shaders enabled. Look at the the 780 and Titan, shaders hardly make a difference in the performance.

I hope the rumored performances are fake. Only slightly faster than Titan on their best next-gen model is highly disappointing.

hope to see BF3 in the testing suite and a BF4 Beta quick-test a few weeks later. also a "here's our review on stock clocks, overclocking review to follow" is fine by me in order to meet time constraints.

Well they did so with a smaller die actually if you would cut down gtx780 to what is locked you'll still end up with about ~480mm^2 minimal.
And this could beat the Titan therefore the ~430mm^2 card could beat a ~535 (Titan with locked parts cut off) which on the same process is a great achievement.

Well then AMD could release a GHz+ version and then Nvidia releases XXX, and on and on and...what's your point?

Eh? It's still 28nm and 20nm won't be ready until the 2nd half of 2014. It's a pretty impressive feat actually (if true) since 9970 will apparently be faster than the Titan despite being a substantially smaller die size. AMD crammed that much more performance in a smaller chip which is more efficient (again, *if* the leaks are true, which isn't certain)..

Traditionally, nvidia has ruled large dies and has used them to win the performance crown. If AMD wins the performance race on 28nm with a smaller die, I find that really impressive TBH. And this is the same GK110 chip that nvidia uses for HPC? For their ultra high end professional cards? Again, if AMD beat it with a smaller die size - impressive. The chiphell leaks also show it using less power than the Titan at load, although, I can't state enough that those are leaks. I guess we'll see real benchmarks soon enough.

Anyway, while I love nvidia products - the GPU race is so much more interesting when it's a tight race. I hope the 9970 performs as the leaks indicate, would shake the market up a bit which is *always* good for consumers regardless of which brand anyone prefers.

I don't know if disappointing is the right word to use...
I'm thinking that a 5~10% better performance than the Titan, for 40% less money is still a WIN(!!!) for AMD... Especially with all the bundled games (BF4 part of the Never Settle bundle rumored).... It's all about perspective...;)
